In 2007, the Aspen Seminar on Values and Society was introduced for the first time in Italy. It was inspired by The Aspen Institute’s widely-acclaimed cornerstone program founded in the United States in 1951. (Read article)

The seminar is held in English in collaboration with The Aspen Institute and non-Members may attend. Participation is upon invitation and payment. The Seminar is held each year during the month of March.

Approximately 28 highly qualified persons of all ages and from different areas of Italy and abroad participate in the seminar. By exploring and discussing the works of classical and contemporary writers, participants exchange views on the great universal values and how they impact on topical issues. The seminar focuses on five themes:

        • Human Nature and Society
        • Tensions in Society
        • Differences within and among Societies
        • Limits of Rule
        • Leadership and the Civil Society

Debates are significantly enhanced by the diversity of the geographic, personal and professional backgrounds of the participants. They support the internationalization of business and cultural leadership as well as cultural exchange with the aim of identifying and giving importance to ideas, wisdom and common interests. The use of the Socratic Method calls for the discussions to be chaired by two or more expert moderators from the US and Italy with the duty of maximizing the effectiveness of the dialogue and exchange of different analyses and experiences.

Inspired by readings from classical authors such as Aristotle, Plato, Confucius, Rousseau, Bacon and Hayek participants explore the sources for innovative methodological and conceptual approaches to the issues at hand. An analysis of texts by contemporary writers such as Martin Luther King, Vaclav Havel and Paul Rusesabagina elicits debate on the challenges society is currently facing and highlights aspects of their growing interdependence. The participants’ performance of an extract from Sophocles’ Antigone provides a further opportunity for reflecting on ethical issues.
