The report The Nexus of Economic Security and the Economics of Security: A Transatlantic Assessment of Key Dynamics in International Trade and Security Policies was edited by Aspen Institute Italia and is the result of a collaboration between Aspen Institute Italia, Aspen Institute France, Aspen Institute España, and Aspen Institute Germany. It features contributions from Italian and international experts, with the aim of providing a detailed analysis of the current scenario, and it offers policy recommendations for political and economic decision-makers.
The report is based on the premise that all EU countries are reassessing the evolution of global trade in terms of tariffs and other barriers to the movement of goods and services, growing competition from China in critical sectors and value chains, and supply security (energy, strategic materials, microchips, etc.). The practical options and policy choices currently being evaluated in this context are also influenced by security and defense concerns. These directly impact transatlantic relations and yet cannot be addressed solely within the framework of NATO.
Transatlantic relations have already entered a new phase. It is now essential for European leaders to understand US priorities and to decide how best to collectively pursue Europe’s fundamental interests.
