Artificial Intelligence and a new generation of opportunities

On November 24, 2021, the Italian government adopted a 2022-2024 strategic artificial intelligence program jointly drafted by the ministries of university and research, of economic development and of technological innovation and digital transition.  In the global race for technological development, the program traces a roadmap for policies aimed at promoting the country’s competitiveness by strengthening national level professional competences and research in the field of artificial intelligence.

      Doing business in Italy

“Doing business” is a term that evokes complexity and challenge, especially when paired with “in Italy”, a country well known for its structural problems and irreconcilable contradictions: Structural problems consisting of a slow and chaotic bureaucracy, lack of legal certainty – due to repeated impulsive legislative modifications as well as to inconsistency and sluggishness in the judicial application of the law – and excessive difficulty accessing credit; irreconcilable contradictions in the form, first, of constant references to entrepreneurs as the drivers of economic recovery clash, wi

Aspen Junior Fellows Annual Conference – Reconciling the environment and development

The 2019 annual Aspen Junior Fellows conference was dedicated to the choices that must be made to reconcile environment and development, and the importance of the time factor. As the perception of climate change spreads, the emergence of the “Greta phenomenon” and demonstrations by young people around the world demanding attention, are proof of the individual and collective ethical questions that have come to the surface and of the increasing intergenerational friction. Some doubts remain on the conclusions of some scientific analyses and related responses.

          Business, youth, innovation

Debate at this Conference for the Aspen Junior Fellows focused on the role of Italian businesses, which, in order to establish themselves within a global market, must perforce be engines of innovation, while at the same time creating social value that goes beyond the figures in their profit and loss accounts and balance sheets. The discussion also addressed the issue of youth employment, dwelling on the necessity of setting up training courses that heed the needs of the labor market and are capable of responding effectively to the changing requirements of firms.

            The political legacy 2017

The focus of discussion at this year’s annual conference for the Aspen Junior Fellows was the political legacy of 2017, marked by the various outcomes of elections around Europe, the uncertain course of Brexit negotiations, the emergence of the new American administration’s policy stances, and the Catalan independence referendum.

              Politics in the XXI century

There have been a number of exceptional events in 2016, including Brexit and Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election.  Next year promises to be no less extraordinary, with elections scheduled in such major European countries as France and Germany.  Within this context the Aspen Junior Fellows Annual Conference focused on the great changes affecting politics in the 21st century, which relate to the efficiency and constraints of the democratic process, populism and technocracy, and new forms of communication and engagement, supported by the innovat

Making space for research and industry. Rediscovering the universe: new resources for new goals

Participants at this Aspen Junior Fellows Conference characterized the current era as a time of change for space exploration, with humanity’s presence off-planet directed at reaching new destinations and new ambitious goals. It was acknowledged, however, that there are various challenges to achieving these objectives, both in outer space and in terms of purely “Earth-based” decisions. The race for Mars has begun, creating a cultural and economic buzz at a global level.

                  The future of labor

The focus of the 14th annual Conference for the Aspen Junior Fellows was the profound transformation undergone by the concept of labor due to major advances in technology, which are changing the way labor is organized, the forms it takes, and where it is performed. Indeed, the institutions that regulate it and the role of workers in increasingly digitized and automated production processes are also changing, while the balance of power between labor and capital has shifted.

Balancing budgets and benefits for Italy’s cultural heritage. The Great Beauty: protecting and promoting art

With the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage marking the 40th year since its inception and the inauguration of its then first minister Giovanni Spadolini, the 13th Annual Conference of the Aspen Junior Fellows seized the opportunity afforded by the occasion to take stock of the current state of the cultural sector in Italy, focusing particularly on the balance to be struck between the preservation of artistic heritage and its exploitation to best advantage from an economic and social standpoint, as well as to articulate a vision for the sector’s future.

Creating excellence. Strategic choices and indispensable resources for educating leaders

The title of this 12th Annual Conference of the Aspen Junior Fellows group was conceived as embodying the Aspen Institute’s core mission, namely, that of promoting and instilling values-based leadership. The theme of this year’s session was chosen with a view to specifically focus on the growing international dimension of knowledge, and to examine whether a multidisciplinary knowledge model (of the European humanist tradition) or a specialized knowledge model is to be preferred.

The future of Europe: creating and distributing new values, beating the crisis

As Altiero Spinelli once observed: “Europe will not fall from the sky”, but rather needs to be built from the ground up with the involvement of everyone. These words served as the opening premise for discussions at this Aspen Junior Fellows Conference on the new challenges that will shape the cohesion and future of the European Union. On one hand, the Conference set out to address the question of the kind of new models that could guarantee prosperity and employment for all Europeans by mitigating the widening imbalances between generations.

Reconciling the environment and development. New ideas from the Y generation to beat weak economic growth

The theme of the Ninth Annual Conference of the Aspen Junior Fellows, held in Milan on May 7-8, was “Reconciling the environment and development. New ideas from the Y generation to beat weak economic growth”. The Conference proceedings were divided into three sessions which focused on: the ecological deficit and measures to establish cross-generational solidarity on environmental values; Italy’s energy strategies viewed from an international comparative perspective; and the environment and food security in a more crowded, hotter, and “flatter” world.

Global solidarity: redefining values in a flat world

The 8th Annual Conference of the Aspen Junior Fellows addressed the issue of solidarity at a time when the global crisis is widening social gaps. Indeed, imbalances in the concentration of global wealth and poverty are increasing, no longer merely signaling economic disparity but also a geopolitical – as well as a moral – differential that is impacting more and more on our future and on the carrying capacity of our planet.

The city as a protagonist of change. Politics and quality of life in the future metropolis

The seventh Annual Conference for the Aspen Junior Fellows was dedicated to the topic of the city, in the year in which, for the first time in history, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, as indicated in the United Nations Population Fund Report. The timeliness of this issue is confirmed by the theme of the 2010 Shanghai Expo: Better City, Better Life. By holding the conference in Milan, the challenges faced by the experimental city in its preparations for the 2015 Milan Expo were highlighted.

The Left and the Right: merit, rights, opportunities. Redefining values for generations to come

This conference focussed on the evolution of traditional political categories, from reform liberalism to liberal socialism, from economic values to development and equal opportunity, from individual merit to corporate mentality, the role of the state and the independence of enterprise. Different solutions have been developed throughout Europe: from the Grosse Koalition in Germany to “neocentralism” in the UK, to a definitive abolishment of the left-right divide (as some defined it) in France.

Defining a New Patriotism: culture, economy and society

The Aspen Junior Fellows annual conference focused its debate on redefining a new patriotism in terms of economy, culture and society. Patriotism founds itself on freedom and the search of common good and therefore does not represent a threat to other countries, nor an obstacle to stable and positive relations with Europe and the rest of the world. In the economic field, being patriotic does not necessarily imply protectionism, position which could – in the long run – damage Italian interests; it means applying a “careful liberalism” as professed by Einaudi.

Shaping our future: new generations new leaders new ideas

The conference was an occasion for the Aspen Junior Fellows to confront themselves with senior leaders on strategic issues concerning globalization. The debate focused primarily on Europe; participants don’t see the recent setbacks as a reason to give up on the Old Continent and it is therefore necessary to the fight demographic decline and relaunch the economy.
