This document aims to contribute thoughts and proposals on the security profiles of communications networks (hereafter also referred to as “TLC networks”). Their critical infrastructure is necessary for the supply of essential services, in addition to being vital for Italy’s national security.
The importance of the services offered over TLC networks allows industrial policy actions to be assessed that are capable – in a setting where the adopted technological solutions are highly innovative and rapidly obsolete – of ensuring the protection of delicate technology platforms. They can also improve the efficiency and competitiveness of the various production sectors. This is done by beefing up the cybersecurity and resilience of the infrastructure inextricably linked to the protection of the data it carries, through technical and regulatory interventions that take on strategic importance in accordance with the European Union’s indications and in line with Italy’s values and Atlantic commitments.
Smart, secure networks that allow rapid, protected access to services, resources, and data are also a decisive asset for the development and consolidation of all industry chains – and not just technological ones. This is an essential factor for the national economic system and for its position within Europe and internationally.
