Economy & Finance – The international financial papers were particularly interested this week in the nomination of the Italian economist, Andrea Enria, as the ECBs Supervisor, describing him as a man who played an important part in drawing up new, post crisis financial regulations. (November 7 in Reuters, – Italy’s Enria wins race to head ECB banking watchdog; and Wall Street Journal read – ECB Nominates Italian Economist as Region’s Top Banking Supervisor). Other financial news dealt with a “spirited” aspect of the food industry with items in both the Wall Street Journal and Reuters talking about how Campari’s Aperol has increased sales of their aperitifs (November 6 – The Aperol Party Arrives in America; November 6 – Campari toasts Aperol success as  third-quarter sales jump). However, Le Monde’s focus was on Ferrero and the new Nutella based products that it hopes will boost sales on international markets (November 7 – Ferrero met les bouchées doubles dans les biscuits avec sa marque Nutella*).

Culture – Italian cinema was at the heart of cultural news this week. Le Monde and Libération wrote about ‘Lazzaro Felice’, the third full length film to be directed by Alice Rohrwacher described as a mystic tale imbued with realism (November 7 – «Heureux comme Lazzaro» : un idiot sur la voie de la sainteté; November 6 – «LAZZARO», LE SIEUR BONTÉ). In the Financial Times, it was Luca Guadagnino who featured, following his return behind a movie camera with ‘Suspiria’ (November 2 – Luca Guadagnino — from Call Me by Your Name to the ultra-violent Suspiria), whilst the Wall Street Journal wrote about the TV adaptation of one of Elena Ferrante’s books “My brilliant friend” (November 7 – Elena Ferrante’s ‘My Brilliant Friend’ Comes to HBO). The Guardian however, ran an interview with the photographer Guido Guidi, the “modern maestro” whose lens captures “the ordinary and the things taken for granted”(November 5 – Guido Guidi: ‘Many times I’m not looking when I press the shutter’).

Tourism and Food & Drink – On tourism, El País “lost itself in nature” as it described a trekking or skiing holiday in the Trentino (November 3 – Propuestas para perderse (o encontrarse) en la naturaleza), followed by another article that described the home of the architect Carlo Scarpa, nestling amongst hectares of vineyards not far from Bolzano that offers guests an opportunity to explore the art, design and architecture of Italy in the 60s (Novmeber 3 – La inesperada casa entre viñedos del arquitecto Carla Scarpa).
It was another home, this time in Capri, that caught the eye of the New York Times, noting that the island’s real estate market had withstood the sector’s ongoing national crisis but dedicating the entire article to a single, stunning Mediterranean style villa with a USD 4.4 million price tag (November 7 – House Hunting in … Italy). And in conclusion, Der Standard was in Sicily so that it could provide readers with the traditional recipe for a spaghetti dish flavored with raw garlic, grated pecorino, pepper and of course, olive oil (November 6 – Spaghetti alla Carrettiera – Pasta, wenn es schnell gehen muss).
