    Economy – the financial strategies of large food industry companies take centre stage: Le Monde highlights the recent acquisition made by Ferrero, which has bought a division of Kellogg’s and has begun – according to the French paper – a full-blown “biscuit war” with other international giants, like Mondelez (April 1 – Entre Ferrero et Mondelez, la guerre des biscuits aura bien lieu*). Another market undergoing consolidation is the coffee market, Reuters has spotlighted how, this year, Lavazza will already see the advantages of its recent acquisitions (April 2 – Coffee maker Lavazza to see the perks of recent deals in 2019). Meanwhile, in the luxury sector, the Wall Street Journal focuses on how Scandicci, the Florentine “home of Made in Italy handbags”, is attracting investment from big names, like Gucci and Prada, thanks to the artisanal know-how of its workers (March 29 – The Home of ‘Made in Italy’ Handbags Is Booming)

    Culture – In its culture coverage, the New York Times reviews a book of photos showing the jewelry and costumes made by the Corbella Milano studio for the “stars” of Milan’s La Scala (March 30 – Adorning the Stars of La Scala*). Reuters has a piece on the safeguarding of Pompeii and its new discoveries, with “fantastic frescos and perfectly preserved mosaics” (March 29 – Italy’s Pompeii offers new glimpses of life before calamity). Die Welt concentrates on theatre with an interview with “Germany’s loved director”, Roberto Ciulli, (March 27 – Ich, eine Maschine, die nie funktioniert), while Süddeutsche Zeitung and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung celebrate the 80th birthday of an “icon” of popular Italian cinema, the actor Terence Hill (March 29 –Vom alten Schlag; Blauäugiger Held).

    Wines Der Standard’s wine section writes of taralli and their “entirely Pugliese tradition” which dates back to the 15th century (April 2 – Taralli – das Knabbergebäck aus Apulien), while Süddeutsche Zeitung goes to the Veneto region to discover the “true origins” of prosecco (April 3 – In dubio Prosecco)
