Culture and tourism – Cultural reporting takes centre stage in the international media this week. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung pays homage to Dante Alighieri 700 years after the death of “il sommo poeta” (January 6 – Ausstellungen? Dante lesen!), while El País Semanal publishes a long talk with Erri de Luca, recounting all the faces – “mason, activist, lover of the high mountains, Old Testament translator” – of the writer whose book Impossibile tells the story of his own youth (January 9 – Erri de Luca: albañil, activista, escritor y traductor del Antiguo Testamento).

The New York Times covers archaeology, with the discovery in Rome of the remains of Caligula’s lost palace, now restored and open to the public (January 12 – Caligula’s Garden of Delights, Unearthed and Restored*), while Financial Times starts from an ancient villa built by an emir in Erice to discuss the Arab domination and influences in Sicily (January 9 – William Dalrymple on Sicily’s Islamic past*). The British daily also recommends a historic villa for rent in Positano to live the “dream of the Amalfi Coast” (January 9 – Five historic villas to rent in the Med*); El País, on the other hand, recommends a tour of Venice’s Ghetto Nuovo to discover “history’s first Jewish quarter” (January 9 – Por la Venecia judía). Lastly, Sueddeutsche Zeitung dedicates coverage to the offerings in Parma, a “city of culture in 2021 as well” (January 12 – Ein Blick zurück, ein Blick nach vorne).

Economy – In the economy, Reuters reports on the agreement between Enel and the Qatar Investment Authority for the joint development of sustainable energy projects in Sub-Saharan Africa (January 7 – Enel teams up with Qatar wealth fund on Africa green energy projects).

Food – In food, The New York Times reports on the online lessons of the Museum of Food and Drink in Brooklyn, which “hosts a discussion” on oil with experts from Tuscany and Calabria (January 11 – An Online Lesson in Olive Oil*). Expansión, on the other hand, in its Fuera de Serie supplement, reports on a “nose brush” for truffles, Giacomo Morra’s idea that allows “this aromatic ingredient” to be best enjoyed (January 13 –  El cepillo para trufa del que se va a encaprichar todo gourmet con buen olfato).
