Culture – This week, the international press has been busy writing about the earthquake and the effects of the bad weather in Central Italy. However, space has been dedicated to various cultural stories with several concentrating on people associated with the sector. Le Monde ran an interview with Renzo Piano in which the architect from Genoa talked about the birth of one of the most famous buildings he has designed, the Beaubourg (January 20 – Renzo Piano : « Je suis le Quasimodo de Beaubourg »*).
British Financial Times ran a feature on the conductor, Gianluca Marcianò currently in Armenia working with the Yerevan Opera (January 20 – The Italian conductor who moved to Armenia after falling in love*) whilst Austria’s Der Standard talked about Riccardo Muti and his promise to return to La Scala (January 22 – Riccardo Muti verspricht weitere Konzerte an der Scala). Le Monde, on the other hand chose to write about singer-songwriter Luigi Tenco and his love story with Dalida (January 20 – Dalida et Luigi, ils se sont tant aimés*).
Another French daily, Libération, offered a review of Gérard Guerrier’s latest book, “Alpini” all about war, as seen from the Alps (January 25 – Alpini, la guerre vue des Alpes) whilst Germany’s die Zeit wrote about how much the German writer and translator Heike Geißler loves Rome (January 23 – Was ich an Rom so mag).
Fashion & style are subjects the foreign press always finds space. Les Echos was at Loro Piana’s latest venture in Paris, dedicated to the home and “the art of living” (January 21 – La « maison » Loro Piana, un nouvel écrin dédié à l’art de vivre*) and Bloomberg dropped in on the Azimut Benetti boatyards in Tuscany to find out how super yachts are born (January 23 – What It’s Like to Custom-Design Your Own Superyacht).
Germany’s die Welt, was celebrating “Cabat”, the Bottega Veneta bag that has become something of a cult (January 22 – So entsteht eine Flechttasche von Bottega Veneta). Reuters went with the financial news of the Made in Italy icon, Piaggio that closed 2016 on a positive note (January 24 – Piaggio says 2016 sales volume up 2.4 pct to 532,000 units).
Tourism and Food & Wine – Tourism with a foodie slant got a mention in the Financial Times in a piece about Sperlonga (January 24 – A taste of Sperlonga, Gulf of Gaeta, Italy ) and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung was in Bologna to visit the “university of ice cream” (January 18 – Die Eismacher von Bologna).
