Salone del Mobile and Vinitaly – Two “great” Spring events are attracting attention for Italy from international newspapers. Le Monde writes about the Salone del Mobile, with an article dedicated to the “French designers” who are exhibiting in Milan, thanks to a “fruitful alliance with Italian industry which goes back decades” (April 5 – Milan, capitale du design… français*). Still on the subject of the Milanese design week, El País travels from stand to stand looking for Spanish brands (April 8 – El diseño español, dispuesto a conquistar el Salone del Mobile de Milán), while The Guardian tells the story of Molteni, and says that “from [its] humble workshop beginnings in the 1930s, the high-end furniture maker has grown into a major enterprise” (April 11 – Molteni&C studio – in pictures).

Meanwhile, Bloomberg goes to Verona to talk about Vinitaly and to taste the “best Brunello di Montalcino” (April 6 – Grab Your Corkscrew: The Best Brunello di Montalcino May Be Here). The Washington Post also talks about wine with the “delicious sangiovese” from Cantina Gabriele, in Lazio, which is certified as kosher (April 5 – This sangiovese is delicious, $13 — and kosher for Passover*)

Culture – Other articles concentrate on Italian cultural figures. Le Monde presents a profile of the tenor, Roberto Alagna, currently appearing in Carmen at the Opera Bastille in Paris (April 5 – Roberto Alagna, chanteur (trop) populaire*). Meanwhile, the Cinémathèque Française will pay homage to Federico Fellini, by showing his complete filmography until May 27 (Le Monde, April 9 – Federico Fellini, un cinéaste en prise directe avec la société médiatique*). Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung takes a general look at the Italian school and university system, with an interview with the chancellor of the University of Milan, Elio Franzini (April 6 – Unser System gehört zu den besten der Welt).

Tourism and gastronomy – As usual, there are also reports on tourism. El País suggests a trip to Sicily, from Palermo to Agrigento, via Taormina, following the route of Spanish playwright, Carolina Romàn (April 5 – ‘Road trip’ a la siciliana), while Bloomberg goes to Rome to tell the story of the efforts being made to “revitalise” Cinecittà (April 6 – Italy’s Legendary Movie Lot Is Primed for New Productions). Der Standard stays in the capital to recommend the recipe “known throughout the world” for penne all’arrabbiata (April 9 – Penne all’Arrabbiata: Rezept für die einzig wahre scharfe Pasta). Finally, Le Monde also looks at cooking and reports that Eataly, the “temple of Italian gastronomy”, is opening in Paris (April 11 – Eataly, le temple de l’épicerie fine italienne, arrive à Paris*).
