Italy’s “new phase” and the strategies of Fiat – During the Christmas period, foreign press attention was once again keenly focused on Italian economic affairs.
The week of December 17 – 23
The man tasked with saving the euro – One of the recurrent figures featured in the financial pages of the international press whose star seems not to have faded is Mario Draghi. The President of the ECB, described by the Brazilian business paper Valor Econômico as “the man whose mission is to save the euro”, was the subject of several articles and interviews in recent days.
The week of December 6 – 16
A turning point for the Italian economy – In the days surrounding the approval of Italy’s new austerity plan, the foreign press looked on with particular interest. Some fifty related items appeared in major international newspapers, explaining and commenting on the legislative package.
The week of January 14 – 20
Monti’s thoughts on Europe and Italy’s liberalization drive – Despite the large number of foreign newspaper reports this week on breaking events in Italy (with over thirty articles dealing with the sinking of the cruise ship Costa Concordia alone), press interest in Italian economic affairs remained undiminished.

Monitoring period from November 1-November 30, 2011
During the monitored period, interest on the part of specialist publications in scientific studies carried out by Italian researchers remained high, with contributions published in November once again predominantly concerned with research in the field of oncology. The studies picked up during this period mainly dealt with cancer clinical trials (with 9 related reports appearing in the monitored journals), together with cardiology and hypertension (with 4 contributions published in each of these fields).

The week of November 28 – December 2
Italian industry is banking on foreign markets – One of the leading Italian-interest stories appearing in the pages of the foreign press this week was how the country’s industry is staking its future on its foreign market presence: Valor Econômico devoted half a page to Pirelli’s investment in the growth of its business in Brazil (Pirelli irá investito no país R$ 1 bi até 2015* on November 30), as well as picking up news of the acquisition in Brazil

The space dedicated to Italian research by scientific journals remains stable: in the month of October, 36 articles were published, of which 6 focussed on oncology and 5 on blood diseases. Also of interest, 3 studies on biology and 3 on genetics.

Monitoring period from August 1-September 30, 2011
The attention given by the scientific news community towards studies conducted by Italian teams remains constant: during the months of August and September, 42 studies were published, among which six focused on hypertension, four on oncology and four on blood disorders. Increased interest was shown for studies produced in the fields of chemistry and physics.
