    Using Italian know-how to China to build sustainable cities. Paolo Vincenzo Genovese, full professor at the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, has won several honors for his studies of eco-systems for urban construction. As Beijing starts to direct part of its growth in the direction of green business, Genovese tells Aspen that Italy has to start doing the same, by encouraging cooperation with the Chinese to attract investments and provide them with that “excellence in details” that Italy produces.

        In the world of physics, Gelsomina De Stasio is known by the acronym she uses to sign her studies, P.U.P.A. Gilbert. She has won numerous awards, including the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and introduced the use of synchrotron light microscopy in biophysics. A member of the “Italian Leaders Abroad” community of Aspen Institute Italia, she is a firm supporter of meritocracy. That, she says, is the only way to bring back those who the brain drain has taken away.

        The week of June 16 – 22

          The Rome meeting and Mont’s mediation to save the euro. – “Ten days to save the euro” Mario Monti spoke to the foreign press before the 29 June EU meeting and the day before his meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merke, French President François Hollande and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. In an interview to a number of major papers, published on June 22, the Italian Prime Minister underscored the need for concrete action to save the single currency.

          The week of June 9 – 15

            Monti – Hollande, an axis for growth – Fears for the eurozone were once again the main theme of the news and the foreign press was focused on the June 14 Rome meeting between Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and French President François Hollande. The encounter was the first in a series of appointments over the next two weeks that will be decisive for the future of the euro.

              After a drop in the number of Italian studies published in scientific journals in April, there was a rise in May. Sixty articles were published this month in the fields of oncology, biology, immunology and physics, as well as other branches of medicine and the hard sciences.

                    In a career which has seen her serve as Chief of Prosecutions at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, an experience recounted in her “Carlo Levi” prize-winning book “Mentre il mondo stava a guardare” (published by Mondadori), and subsequently as Registrar of the International Criminal Court (an institution based in The Hague which deals with sensitive cases, such as those involving Libya and Sudan), Silvana Arbia has been able to draw on more than just the “profound legal insight” gained from her training and work as a judge in Italy.

                        Prada doubles its profits – No crisis for luxury goods, at least as far as Prada is concerned. The Italian fashion house just presented a record quarter report with profits more than doubled (+111% from late January to late April) and news from Bloomberg showed the company’s great performance on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange  (June 7 – Prada Soars in H.K. as Profit Doubles on Luxury Demand).
