    Monti’s realism and a reduction in income tax – The Italian government approved the stability pact and the day after (October 11), the foreign press turned its attention to what was called the “surprise” measure: the reduction of income tax rates (IRPEF) for incomes under 28 thousand euros a year.

        Istanbul: Excellence in the humanities speaks Italian. Interview with Alessandra Ricci

          An Italian archaeologist working in ancient Constantinople. Alessandra Ricci, undergraduate degree at La Sapienza University of Rome and PhD at Princeton, teaches at the Department of Archaeology and Art History at Koç University in Istanbul. Ricci has not only found fodder for her studies of late antiquity in the ancient capital of the Byzantine Empire. In 2005 she took part in the creation of the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, which she directed until 2009. In just a few years, the center has attracted scholars of the humanities from the entire world.

          The week of September 15 – 21

            Made in Italy Sparkles in emerging markets – It was fashion week in Milan and the foreign press turned its spotlight on Made in Italy brands. As the Financial Times explained (September 20 – Made in Italy tag lures EM consumers*), it isn’t only a question of style. The clothing and accessories sector has withstood the recession and sales continue, thanks to the success that Made in Italy products are having in emerging markets.

            We’ve discovered the gene responsbile for some brain tumors. Interview with Antonio Iavarone

              Targeted therapy to fight a tumor incurable until now. With his research team, Antonio Iavarone, professor in the Department of Neurology of Columbia University Medical Center, has made a discovery that might change the fight against cancer. A study published in July in Science explains how Iavarone has isolated a new genetic alternation that causes a subgroup of the most malignant brain tumors. At the same time, he identified a targeted therapy to  treat this form of cancer. “And that’s only the tip of the iceberg” Iavarone explained to Aspen.

                The scientific press dedicated more space on studies by Italian researchers. There were 39 articles published in August, an increase compared to previous months, particularly in the field of oncology. There were sixteen studies reported, involving 131 researchers in 52 centers.

                    Discovering a tumor with a simple blood test even before symptoms appear. That is the research goal of Alessandra Luchini, Assistant Professor al Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine of George Mason University, Virginia. And the high level of training she received in Italy will help her reach that goal. On the other hand, according to Luchini, member of the “Italian Leaders Abroad” community of Aspen Institute Italia, the ductile mentis of Italian researchers with all its versatility receives growing recognition among U.S. research teams.

                            A library that leaves its dusty memories behind to become a multi-purpose center for the entire neighbor. Sergio Dogliani, director of Idea Store in the municipality of Tower Hamlets, London, a project to innovate library services, combining them with courses and cultural initiatives. The results in the British capital’s East End have been – as Dogliani told Aspen’s web site – extraordinary: four times the number of users, with the local economy also benefiting from the neighborhood’s revival, Today, ten years after the project was born, there is a growing interest in Italy as well.

The articles published in July were – to a large extent – dedicated to onology (seven of 29 articles), but also included studies on obesity, vascular pathologies (three studies each) and pediatrics (two articles).

                                The week of July 21 – 27

                                  Draghi, guarantor of the euro’s future – “A breath of fresh air in the musty room of the European crisis” was how the foreign press greeted the words – spoken on July 27 – of Mario Draghi, about role that the European Central Bank will play in protecting the single currency. The greatest emphasis on the speech by the ECB president came from Spanish papers, particularly interested in the evolution of the crisis.

The most complete journey was reported by La Nacion, which looked at the ties between Argentina and Italy and took an “emotional” journey from Ventimiglia to Sicily (July 14 – Italia de alto impacto emocional).
