While it is true that red tape and regulatory uncertainty can scare off foreign investors, it is equally the case that Italy continues to be a country viewed with interest, owing to the quality of its products, its knowhow, and the flexibility of its human capital. Fashion – This week, the international press is devoting coverage to Italian fashion brands.
Economy – Stories of corporate growth take centre stage on the business pages in the foreign press: El Pais covers Atlantia’s offer for Spanish competitor Abertis in an operation exceeding 16 billion euros that will give life to “the leading motorway group, not just in Europe, but in the world” (October 13 – Bruselas da luz verde a la OPA de Atlantia sobre Abertis), while El Mundo covers the past, present, and future of the Ferrar
Industry rebounds – Industrial production and consumer confidence continue to grow apace, and the news is being covered in the foreign press: “September was the best month so far this year for Italy’s industrial sector,” with growth in production “coming in well ahead of forecasts for the second successive month,” sending “signs of optimism,” explain Financial Times (Italian industrial production blasts through forecasts*) and Boersen Zeitung (
Economy – Signs of Italy’s economic recovery are making news in the foreign press, particularly in Financial Times which highlights increased confidence among consumers, who “were more positive than even the most bullish analysts predicted” (September 27 – Italian business confidence hits fresh post-crisis high), and reports that Europe’s economic growth is making Italian jewellers “shine” (October 4 –
Fashion Week –It’s Fashion Week, and the spotlight shines on Milan’s runways. Once again, the sciences of medicine and health have confirmed their importance in the publications of Italian laboratories. Medicine, and oncology in particular, remains among the topics most dealt with by Italian research labs. Monitoring of international science journals (Science, Lancet, and the publications in the Nature group) has found 46 studies by national laboratories, with a particular emphasis on cancer treatments (5 articles in Science, British Journal of Cancer, Scientific Report). Genetics is also covered, with 2 articles in Gene Therapy and Nature Genetics. Again in June, medicine confirms its standing as the field on which publications by Italian laboratories and researchers have concentrated. Monitoring of international science journals (Science, Lancet, and the publications in the Nature group) yielded 61 studies. This month, biology and oncology account for the greatest number of international studies done by Italian laboratories. Economy – Pirelli’s return to the stock market, in “one of the biggest initial public offerings in Europe so far this year,” is monopolizing the business news from Italy, with articles in Financial Times (September 15 – Pirelli aims for €8bn valuation in stock market return*), Reuters (September 20 – Pirelli’ The European Space Agency (ESA) took no part in the “space race” which culminated in the manned Moon landing during the Cold War. Yet, thanks also to substantial input from Italy, a founding member of the Agency and a major contributor to its activities, the ESA has played a key role in the development of the space industry and related technologies in Europe, as explained in the following interview by Lucio Scolamiero, Principal Mechanical System Engineer at ESTEC, the Agency’s “technical epicenter”, based in the Netherlands.
