Once again the scientific press dedicated considerable intention to studies by Italian researchers. Thirty-four studies were published in October, with special interest in oncological research. Thirteen studies in this field were published, conducted by 89 researchers in 14 centers. Most of the studies were publish in Nature group journals such as Leukemia, Oncogene and Blood Cancer Journal, while important articles also appeared in Lancet e Lancet Oncology.

As always, Lancet published work by Paolo De Coppi – a member of Aspen’s Italian Talents Abroad group. De Coppi penned an article on the first stem-cell-based, tissue engineered tracheal replacement in a child. (Lancet with a follow up report). De Coppi’s team also demonstrated that  amniotic stem cells take on the same characteristics as embryo cels without any genetic manipulation (here). This is a step forward that might lead, in the near future, to the correction at birth of congenital disorders using the cells of the fetus extracted during amniocentesis. De Coppi speaks of this discovery  and his work as head of Great Ormond Street Hospital, London in an online interview with Aspen.

Finally, the new annual report on tuberculosis was presented last October 17 by Mario Raviglione, director of the Stop TB department of the World Health Organization and member of Aspen’s Italian Talents Abroad group (an online interview was published last April). The report was widely reported in the press, with articles published not only in the scientific press, such as Nature News and Science, but also by international agencies Reuters as well as BBC and CNN.
