The “made in Italy” brand throughout the world – has attracted much attention in the international press this week with articles about its expansion onto the world’s markets, thanks to the announcement, made by a few major Italian groups, revealing their latest quarterly figures. The Financial Times wrote about Gucci’s positive influence on the Kering accounts (October 25 – Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent usher in fashionable sales growth at Kering*) whilst it was the rise in European and Latin American sales experienced by Luxottica and the company’s contemplation of new international markets that warranted pieces by both the Wall Street Journal and Reuters (October 24 – Luxottica Sales Rise, Helped by Europe, Latin America*), (October 25 – Luxottica CEO says looking at new markets or distribution for M&A.
It was Brembo’s new Mexican factory that interested El Mundo, describing how it has become a point of reference for brake manufacturers (October 24 – Brembo se consolida como la referencia mundial en frenos). Morocco’s le Matin wrote about the extensive presence of Italian businesses at the Medinit Expo in Casablanca (October 20 – 100 entreprises italiennes au «Medinit Expo») the New York Times described the Italian glamour that third generation Italian jewelers, Eleuteri, have introduced to New York (October 25 – Eleuteri, a Vintage Jeweler, Brings Italian Glamour to New York).
Food & Wine – Italian excellences are also hoping to become even more readily available abroad: Les Echos explained that grappa is starting to be trendy (October 25 – Joue-la comme la grappa*); Washington Post wrote about a few wines it thought readers should try (October 22 – A fun bunch of Italian and French wines to try*). Sueddeutsche Zeitung extolled the virtues of Verdicchio (October 26 – Reifezeit), whilst on the food side, Niko Romito’s attitude about not wasting food in his restaurant the “Reale” in Castel di Sangro warranted an article in El País (October 25 – Niko Romito, la contracultura culinaria).
Culture – In this week’s cultural news die Zeit interviewed Riccardo Muti, “one of the best interpreters of Verdi and Mozart of our times” (October 24 – “Ich mag keine Kompromisse”), whilst el País wrote about the latest record released by Flavio Ferri-Benedetti, dedicated to Domenico Annibali, the 17th century contralto castrato (October 21 – Aníbal el caníbal). El Mundo, on the other hand, printed a review of Carlo Feltrinelli’s book, “Senior Service” that sets out the life of his father, Giangiacomo (October 24 – Feltrinelli: a la revolución en velero). Finally, the Washington Post ran a series of photos of The Art Of The Brick, the Milan-based exhibition of sculptures made by Nathan Sawaya from Lego (October 20 – Exhibit of Lego sculptures opens in Milan*).
100 years of the Giro d’Italia – This landmark anniversary of the famous bicycle race also attracted various tributes (el País October, 25 – El Giro se autohomenajea en su centenario), with the leg running from Lake Como to Milan (Sueddeutsche Zeitung, October 25 – Giro-Route 2017: Von Sardinien über Sizilien nach Mailand) and the plethora of mountains (El Mundo, October 25 – Empacho de montaña en el Giro de Italia del centenario).
