The <em>New York Times<\/em> wrote about <strong>Paolo Galluzzi, <\/strong>director of the Galileo Museum in Florence and formerly in charge of the Biblioteca Leonardiana, describing him as the \u201cman who has successfully masterminded the conversion of two analog geniuses into the digital age\u201d(December 21 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/21\/world\/europe\/leonardo-galileo-paolo-galluzzi.html\">The Man Who Brought Leonardo and Galileo Into the 21st Century<\/a>)*. Leonardo \u2013 and his portraits of women &#8211;&nbsp; also featured in an article in <em>Die Zeit<\/em> (January 2 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/2019\/02\/frauenportraits-leonardo-da-vinci-maria-anna-kinder\">So herrlich selbstbewusst<\/a>) which it followed up with a piece all about his Mona Lisa (January 3 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/2019\/02\/mona-lisa-leonardo-da-vinci-louvre\">Sie sieht mich einfach nicht<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em> turned its attention to 18th century art in a piece about the decorative Rococo-style of <strong>Luigi Valadier<\/strong> who is the subject of an exhibition currently showing at the Frick Collection in New York (December 27 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/27\/arts\/design\/decorative-arts-frick-collection-valadier.html\">With a Centerpiece Like This, Who Needed Cake?<\/a>*). The same paper dedicated a piece to the work of David Maialetti who made his way to the <strong>Luzzara<\/strong> in the Emilia region to follow in the footsteps of the photographer Paul Strand who was himself brought there 60 years ago by the screenwriter and neo-realist Cesare Zavattini (December 31 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/31\/lens\/american-photographers-italian-village-luzzara.html\">An American Photographer\u2019s Pilgrimage to the Italian Village of Luzzara<\/a>). The <em>Financial Times <\/em>however, was in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg to visit an exhibition celebrating&nbsp; the work of the artist described as the \u201cmonarch of painting\u201d, <strong>Piero della Francesca<\/strong> (December&nbsp; 28 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f762a1d6-0515-11e9-bf0f-53b8511afd73\">Piero della Francesca at The Hermitage, St Petersburg \u2014 Platonic utopias<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>The French press had other subjects in mind, with <em>Le Monde<\/em> explaining that Latin is far from being a dead language in Italy (December 27 &nbsp;&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/idees\/article\/2018\/12\/27\/en-italie-le-latin-est-une-langue-encore-bien-vivante_5402803_3232.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=43\">En Italie, le latin est une langue encore bien vivante<\/a>) and <em>Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> reviewed <strong>Claudio Magris\u2019<\/strong> latest book, \u2018Instatanee\u2019 (January 2 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/next.liberation.fr\/livres\/2019\/01\/02\/claudio-magris-coups-de-griffe-sur-le-vif_1700740\">CLAUDIO MAGRIS, COUPS DE GRIFFE SUR&nbsp;LE VIF<\/a>*). Then the same paper ran an article that combined culture and business with a profile of <strong>Carlo Purassanta<\/strong>, the Italian VP of Microsoft France who is optimistic about technology and its role in a \u201cdesirable future\u201d (January 8 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/france\/2019\/01\/08\/carlo-purassanta-dolce-vista_1701672\">Carlo Purassanta, dolce vista<\/a>). Both papers also wrote about Italian cinema, with <em>Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> remembering \u2018Inferno\u2019, the film with which <strong>Dario Argento<\/strong> \u201cmade up the night with the brightest of colors\u201d some 38 years ago (December 21 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/next.liberation.fr\/cinema\/2018\/12\/21\/cine-dario-argento-habiles-abimes_1699250\">CIN\u00c9 \/ DARIO ARGENTO, HABILES AB\u00ceMES<\/a>), whilst <em>Le Monde<\/em> published a profile of <strong>Carlo Verdone <\/strong>and his \u201canti-cinepanettone\u201d films (January 4 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/cinema\/article\/2019\/01\/04\/carlo-verdone-l-envers-du-cinepanettone_5404972_3476.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=14\">Cin\u00e9ma&nbsp;: Carlo Verdone, l\u2019envers du \u00ab&nbsp;cinepanettone&nbsp;\u00bb<\/a>*).<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> \u2013 Culture and tourism came together to feature in a few articles, with various English-language papers celebrating the re-opening of the Gladiator\u2019s School in <strong>Pompeii<\/strong> that comes amidst what is seen to be the archeological site\u2019s rebirth. (<em>The Guardian<\/em>, December 31 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/dec\/31\/new-discoveries-at-pompeii-come-amid-renaissance-at-site\">New discoveries at Pompeii come amid renaissance at site<\/a>; the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, January 3 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/restored-pompeii-gladiator-building-open-to-public\/2019\/01\/03\/0b4ee1b8-0f62-11e9-8f0c-6f878a26288a_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.e66761e26afb\">Restored Pompeii gladiator building open to public<\/a>*; the <em>New York Times<\/em>, January 3 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2019\/01\/03\/world\/europe\/ap-eu-italy-pompeii.html\">Restored Pompeii Gladiator Building Open to Public<\/a>*). However, Spain\u2019s <em>El Pa\u00eds <\/em>featured a trail in <strong>Rome<\/strong> that follows in the footsteps of Tosca (January 9 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/elviajero.elpais.com\/elviajero\/2019\/01\/03\/actualidad\/1546516789_513830.html\">La fabulosa Roma de \u2018Tosca\u2019<\/a>) having previously extolled the joys of spending New Year\u2019s Eve in <strong>Naples<\/strong> in order to enjoy the \u201cspectacle\u201d of a city that is so alive (December 25 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/elviajero.elpais.com\/elviajero\/2018\/12\/20\/actualidad\/1545300604_442413.html\">Nochevieja a la napolitana<\/a>). The <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>was in <strong>Pisa<\/strong> to visit a villa commissioned by the Medici family that is currently up for sale 8January 9 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/a-historic-tuscan-manor-exchanging-hands-after-centuries-11547048850?mod=searchresults&amp;page=1&amp;pos=5\">A Historic Tuscan Manor Exchanging Hands After Centuries<\/a>), whilst the same paper was telling readers about <strong>Sicilian <\/strong>food (December 20 &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/savoring-sicily-11545321979?mod=searchresults&amp;page=3&amp;pos=8\">Savoring Sicily<\/a><\/span>). The <em>Sueddeutsche Zeitung <\/em>wrote about the quality of life in <strong>Milan <\/strong>(January 6 &#8211;<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/leben\/staedte-ranking-mailand-stern-des-nordens-1.4271963\">Mailand, Stern des Nordens<\/a>) whilst <em>El Mundo<\/em> included <strong>Cortina<\/strong>, \u201cthe jewel of the Dolomites\u201d and more specifically its Hotel Cristallo, in its list of the best hotels for skiers this season (December 28 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/album\/viajes\/el-baul\/2018\/12\/28\/5c191617fdddff87aa8b456c.html\">Los hoteles de esqu\u00ed que tienes que conocer esta temporada<\/a>).<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Luxury <\/strong>also featured in various lifestyle articles with <em>Expansion<\/em> writing about <strong>Benetti\u2019s<\/strong> latest \u201cgigayacht\u201d (December 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/nauta360\/yates-lujo\/2018\/12\/20\/5c1b8975e2704efd8b8b456e.html\">BENETTI FB277: EL &#8216;GIGAYATE&#8217; ITALIANO<\/a>) whilst <em>Icon, El Pa\u00eds\u2019<\/em> lifestyle supplement, featured <strong>Dolce&amp;Gabbana\u2019s<\/strong> vases inspired by Sicilian baroque created especially for the La Rinascente department store chain (December 22 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2018\/12\/18\/icon_design\/1545152531_556021.html\">C\u00f3mo el despecho dio lugar al jarr\u00f3n de cer\u00e1mica m\u00e1s ex\u00f3tico de Sicilia<\/a>). The same Spanish magazine also ran a piece that explained how hotel entrepreneur Kike Sarasola has chosen the <strong>Palazzo Rhinoceros <\/strong>in Rome to be the first of his new chain of luxury hotels (January 6 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2019\/01\/05\/icon_design\/1546692244_113826.html\">Kike Sarasola lanza una gama de hoteles de lujo. Primera parada: Roma<\/a>). Moreover, <em>Bloomberg <\/em>chose to include images of <strong>Civita di Bagnoregio<\/strong>, <strong>Ferrari\u2019<\/strong>s driving school and a <strong>sardine pizza<\/strong> in a presentation of its favorite luxury photos for 2018 (December 27 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/photo-essays\/2018-12-27\/our-favorite-luxury-photos-of-the-year\">Our Favorite Luxury Photos of the Year<\/a>).-<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>New York Times<\/strong> ran a piece about an icon of Italian industry: the <strong>Vespa \u2013 <\/strong>noting that it retains its value better than any other vehicle (December 27 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/27\/business\/vespa-scooters-resale-values.html\">A 72-Year-Old Italian Star Barely Showing Its Age<\/a>*). Meanwhile, Lebanon\u2019s <em>L&#8217;Orient le Jour<\/em> celebrated the handmade toys created by <strong>Mario Collino<\/strong>, who goes by the name \u201cPrezzemolo\u201d describing him as (the character who created Pinocchio) \u201cthe Geppetto of modern times\u201d (December 25 &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lorientlejour.com\/article\/1149835\/le-geppetto-du-piemont-apotre-de-la-magie-des-jouets-dantan.html\">Le Geppetto du Pi\u00e9mont, ap\u00f4tre de la magie des jouets d&#8217;antan<\/a><\/span>).<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Food and Wine<\/strong> \u2013 Various eateries, bars and the like also got a mention during this period. <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> pointed out that Italy has the greatest number of women chef\u2019s featured in the 2019 Michelin Guide (January 5 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2019\/01\/03\/estilo\/1546513686_409292.html\">Revoluci\u00f3n feminista en las cocinas de Italia<\/a>) whilst the paper\u2019s weekly supplement was in \u201cCondividere\u201d a trattoria that the Chef, Ferran Adria has just opened in Turin in collaboration with <strong>Lavazza<\/strong> (January 8 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2018\/12\/28\/eps\/1545998297_487310.html\">El nuevo proyecto gastron\u00f3mico de Ferran Adri\u00e0 en Italia<\/a>). The <em>Washington Post<\/em> wrote about <strong>Treviso\u2019s<\/strong> Lab Caffettin and how an artisanal coffee shop is able to compete with modern coffee capsules (January 3 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/italy-invented-coffee-culture-now-its-a-coffee-time-capsule\/2019\/01\/02\/aae47a0a-0209-11e9-958c-0a601226ff6b_story.html?utm_term=.c519913dd8d7\">Italy invented coffee culture. Now it\u2019s a coffee time capsule<\/a>*) whilst <em>Der Standard<\/em> was in <strong>Fico<\/strong>, to visit <strong>Eatitaly<\/strong>, the permanent \u201cfood park\u201d in Bologna (January 9 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/derstandard.at\/2000095043138\/Eataly-in-Bologna-Besuch-im-Bauch-Italiens\">Eataly in Bologna: Besuch im Bauch Italiens<\/a>) and lastly <em>Le Monde<\/em> wrote about A<strong>groittica Lombarda\u2019s <\/strong>caviar and how it has made Italy a world leader when it comes to this \u201cblack gold\u201d (December 25 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/m-gastronomie\/article\/2018\/12\/20\/l-italie-roule-sur-l-or-noir-du-caviar_5400091_4497540.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=72\">L\u2019Italie roule sur l\u2019or (noir) du caviar<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>Several traditional Italian recipes made it into the foreign papers too:\u201crisotto without the rice\u201d(<em>Die Zeit<\/em>, December 26 &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/zeit-magazin\/2019\/01\/pasta-pilzen-rezept-wochenmarkt\">Risotto ohne Reis<\/a><\/span>), pappardelle with Palermo-style lentils (<em>Der Standard\u2019s<\/em>, January 2 &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/derstandard.at\/2000094339084\/Pappardelle-mit-Lisensugo-karamellisierten-Zwiebeln-und-Joghurt\">Rezept: Pappardelle mit Linsensugo<\/a><\/span>), gnocchi with butter and sage (<em>Madame Le Figaro, <\/em>January 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/madame.lefigaro.fr\/recettes\/faire-ses-gnocchis-maison-recette-a-la-sauge-060119-162939\">Gnocchis \u00e0 la sauge<\/a>) and the<em> <\/em>hazelnut cream dessert (<em>Der Standard<\/em>, January 8 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/derstandard.at\/2000095573284\/Haselnuss-Schokocreme-Rezept-fuer-den-italienischen-Aufstrich\">Haselnuss-Schokocreme: Rezept f\u00fcr den italienischen Aufstrich<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>*Article available \/ at registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Culture was the main focus of the foreign press over the holiday period.
