Economy<\/strong> \u2013 New acquisitions, alliances and growth. The foreign press has written about several Italian businesses this week, starting with a Reuters<\/em> piece about Enel\u2019s <\/strong>expansion plans as announced by its CEO, Francesco Starace, who declared that it is looking to actively seek acquisitions outside Europe (April 12 – Enel actively eying M&A in regulated sphere: CEO<\/a>). Another business, Open Fiber<\/strong>, which is part-owned by Enel, is also expanding thanks to an agreement made with banks that will fund 6.5 billion Euros of investments (New York Times<\/em>, April 13 – Italy’s Open Fiber Enlists Banks for $8 Billion Broadband Rollout<\/a>). More investments worth billions are also on the horizon of another energy giant, Eni<\/strong>, that is planning to invest 7 billion Euros on the Italian market over the next four years (April 18 in two US dailies \u2013 the New York Times<\/em> – Eni Investing 7 Billion Euros in Italy Over 4 Years<\/a>* and the Washington Post<\/em> – Eni investing 7 billion euros in Italy over 4 years<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

Piedmont based Lavazza<\/strong>, on the other hand, intends to self-fund its growth. Founded 123 years ago, it has turned down offers by other major groups in the food sector in order to safeguard its independence and has already managed to significantly increase in size, an optimistic story carried by both New York Times and<\/em> Reuters<\/em> (April 12 – Lavazza Vows Independence, Says Turned Down JAB and Nestle<\/a>*; Lavazza vows independence, says turned down JAB and Nestle<\/a>). In the meantime, thanks to its collaboration with Spanish chef, Fernan Adri\u00e1, the coffee group has launched a new-style restaurant in Turin called Condividere by Lavazza (Expansi\u00f3n<\/em>, April 13 – Lavazza se al\u00eda con Adri\u00e0 para crear un restaurante<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Then, the Wall Street Journal<\/em> was all about Italian innovation in an article about Pininfarina<\/strong> that, having designed many of the sports cars people dream about, is now planning to build something even more exciting (April 16 – Storied Ferrari Designer Wants to Build a $2.5 Million Electric Car<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

Culture<\/strong> also featured in this week\u2019s foreign papers, many of which dedicated column inches to remembering Vittorio Taviani, describing him as \u201can emblematic brother in the Italian film world\u201d and a \u201chuge loss for Italian culture \u201c who became famous, along with his own brother, Paolo, thanks to the film \u201cCesare deve morire\u201d that won a Palme D\u2019Or in Cannes in 1977. (April 15, 16 and 18 in The Guardian<\/em> – Italian film director Vittorio Taviani dies aged 88<\/a>; Le Monde<\/em> \u2013 Vittorio Taviani, moiti\u00e9 d\u2019une fratrie embl\u00e9matique du cin\u00e9ma italien, est mort<\/a>; El Mundo<\/em> – Muere el cineasta italiano Vittorio Taviani, director de ‘C\u00e9sar debe morir’, a los 88 a\u00f1os<\/a>; Les Echos<\/em> – D\u00e9c\u00e8s de Vittorio Taviani, indissociable de son fr\u00e8re Paolo<\/a>; New York Times – <\/em>Vittorio Taviani, 88, Dies; Made Acclaimed Films With Brother<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

Whilst El Pais<\/em> was visiting the museum that Venice<\/strong> has dedicated to Casanova (April 15 – Venecia no olvida a Casanova, su libertino universal<\/a>, El Mundo<\/em> wrote about the ‘In Lapide Depictum. Pintura italiana sobre piedra’ exhibition that has just opened in Madrid\u2019s Prada Museum featuring Titian\u2019s<\/strong> \u201c\u2019Ecce Homo\u201d (April 16 – Tiziano, eterno y sobre piedra<\/a>). Architecture also got a mention,  thanks to the Milan based Prada Foundation\u2019s<\/strong> new tower, designed by Rem Khoolhass (Washington Post<\/em>, April 18 – Koolhaas: Prada Tower explores effect of space on art<\/a> and in a photographic gallery featuring the works of Carlo Scarpa (Le Monde<\/em>, April 19 \u2013 Dans les pas de l\u2019architecte Carlo Scarpa<\/a>*). <\/strong><\/p>\n

Food & Drink<\/strong> also featured this week, with Die Zeit<\/em> providing readers with a traditional Italian recipe based on spelt and fennel (April 17 – Ein Teller Urkraft<\/a>) whilst Der Standard<\/em> chose to delight its readers with a typical Ligurian \u201cspringtime\u201d recipe for spinach and ricotta ravioli (April 17 – Spinat-Ricotta-Ravioli alla Genovese: Ligurische Fr\u00fchlingspasta<\/a>).<\/p>\n
