Economy<\/strong> \u2013 News of an economic nature was featured by both Reuters <\/em>and the New York Times<\/em>, in items about Enel\u2019s <\/strong>new investment plan (January 31 – Enel to double Italy investments to 12 bln euros 2017-2020<\/a>) and the utility company\u2019s efforts to reap the benefits of the boom in electric cars by making deals with carmakers (January 30 – Italy’s Enel Courts More Carmakers in e-Car Charge<\/a>*), and in another piece, Reuters<\/em> also wrote about Italy\u2019s Luxottica<\/strong>, the world\u2019s largest eyewear maker, and its growing profits (January 29 – Luxottica sees strong FY adj. net profit growth after sales meet guidance<\/a>). Meantime, Bloomberg<\/em> featured an interview with Claudio Costamagna, President of  Cassa Depositi e Prestiti<\/strong> who spoke of his optimism about Italy\u2019s economy (January 25 – CDP’s Costamagna Says Italian Banks Are in `Much Better Shape’<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Culture<\/strong> \u2013 This week El Mundo<\/em> interviewed the Italian Director, Luca Guadagnino<\/strong>, who has his eye on 4 Oscars (January 25 – Luca Guadagnino: “Me gusta hacer cosas que me apasionen”<\/a>), and Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> wrote about the connubiality between \u201cfinesse and insolence\u201d seen in the 1960 Antonio Pietrangeli film \u201cAda e le compagne\u201d (January 30 – \u00abAdua et ses compagnes\u00bb, des filles de joie en peine<\/a>). It also wrote about Elena Ferrante\u2019s <\/strong>\u201cprodigious\u201d series (January 26 – Elena Ferrante, la s\u00e9rie prodigieuse<\/a>*) whereas The Guardian<\/em>, chose to reprint an article from its historic archives that described the \u201cmajestic\u201d funeral of the composer, Giuseppe Verdi<\/strong> (January 31 – Funeral of Signor Verdi – archive, 1901<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Style <\/strong>\u2013 On the style front, the New York Times<\/em> wrote about the new direction Brioni<\/strong> is taking and about the label\u2019s Creative Director, Nina-Maria Nitsche (January 25 – Brioni Redefines Itself, With a Whisper and a Smirk<\/a>), whilst Bloomberg<\/em>\u2019s focus was on another aspect of Italian style in a piece that reviewed the Stelvio, Alfa Romeo<\/strong>\u2019s <\/strong>latest contender in the SUV stakes (January 31 – Meet the Tough New Crossover Contender: The Alfa Romeo Stelvio<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Food & Wine<\/strong> \u2013 As always, several articles on this subject appeared in the foreign press this week, with the New York Times<\/em> writing about the Italian habit of turning vegetables into tasty soups (January 26 – A Satisfying Soup From the Italian Pantry<\/a>) and another article, talking about the \u201carrival\u201d of Apulian speciality \u2013 panzerotti \u2013 in Brooklyn and where readers should go to try them out (January 30 – Brooklyn Gets a Bite of Panzerotti<\/a>). Roman cuisine also got a mention but this time in Der Standard<\/em> that provided a recipe for Spaghetti alla Carbonara to be tried at home (January 30 – Das einzig richtige Rezept f\u00fcr Spaghetti alla Carbonara<\/a>), whilst the Wall Street Journal<\/em> provided some suggestions on what dishes go well with that most noble of Venetian red wines, Amarone<\/strong> (January 25 – Yes, Wine Lovers Actually Can Pair Amarone With Food<\/a>).<\/p>\n
