Italy in Europe and the world<\/strong> \u2013  This week, the foreign press took the opportunity provided by the World Economic Forum in Davos to interview a few well-known Italian personalities. For Bloomberg<\/em> it was the Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni<\/strong> who offered up his vision of protectionism in Europe and the world (January 24 – Europe Should \u2018Play Its Own Game\u2019 on Free Trade, Gentiloni Says<\/a>), whilst in another article, Intesa SanPaolo\u2019s CEO Carlo Messina<\/strong> was keen to stress that Italy\u2019s economy is on the up (January 24 – Intesa CEO Says Italy’s Real Economy Is Recovering<\/a>). For Liberation <\/em>it was Enrico Letta\u2019s<\/strong> views on the European debate about migrants that took centre stage (January 22 – Enrico Letta : \u00abSur la question migratoire, l\u2019esprit europ\u00e9en n\u2019existe pas\u00bb<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

Economy<\/strong> – This week\u2019s news about Italy\u2019s economy focused on recent acquisitions. The Financial Times<\/em> took another look at the American companies that Ferrero<\/strong> has acquired from Nestl\u00e9 as it expands its \u201cchocolate empire\u201d (January 19 – M&A: Ferrero spreads its chocolate empire<\/a>*) and France\u2019s Les Echos<\/em> also featured the confectionary sector in an article about a major French investment group in Monviso<\/strong>, an Italian company that produces bread substitutes (January 23 – C\u00e9r\u00e9a Partenaire rach\u00e8te l\u2019italien Monviso<\/a>*). Other financial news also featured writing on 23 January about NTVs<\/strong> future public offerings (Reuters<\/em>, January 23 – Ex-Ferrari boss takes high-speed rail firm down IPO route<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Culture \u2013 <\/strong>Le Monde <\/em>wrote about the French translation of Mario Pomilio\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cRacconto interrotto\u201d and its one hundred or so \u201cdelicious and sensitive pages\u201d (January 25 – Le vieil homme et la litt\u00e9rature<\/a>*). The same French paper also focused on Italian cinema with one article featuring a review of the movie Fortunata<\/strong> saying that actress Jasmine Trinca \u201cshowed impressive energy\u201d(January 24 – \u00ab Fortunata \u00bb : un m\u00e9lodrame maquill\u00e9 comme un camion<\/a>*) and another signalling the new edition of \u201cFellini Roma<\/strong>\u201d, a documentary about the Eternal City as seen through the eyes of the masterly Italian cinematographer\u201d (January 24 – DVD : Rome, ville monstre dans le regard de Fellini<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

Luxury & lifestyle<\/strong>\u2013 Following on from the end of Milan fashion week, the international press continued to show an interest in Italian-style luxury albeit in other sectors. Bloomberg<\/em> took part in Ferrari<\/strong>\u2019s Driving Course, available only to those who actually own one of the Maranello supercars (January 18 – This $14,000 Driving Course Will Give You a Taste of the Track<\/a>). The news agency was also in Lucca<\/strong> to see the villa \u2013 now on sale \u2013 that used to belong to Paolina Buonaparte, a \u201chouse built for entertainment\u201d located only an hour away from the heart of Tuscan culture and its beaches (January 18 – This $9.8 Million Italian Villa Was Owned by Napoleon\u2019s Sister<\/a>). On the other hand, El Mundo \u2013 <\/em>lamented the passing of Bruno Giacosa<\/strong>, \u201cone of the great men of the wine world known also as the \u201cNebbiolo wizard\u201d \u2013 who was responsible for making that particular grape famous throughout the world (January 23 – Adi\u00f3s, Giacosa, mago de la nebbiolo<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Sport<\/strong> \u2013 It was the latest win of Italian skier, Sofia Goggia<\/strong>, that featured in an article in Les Echos<\/em> (January 19 – Ski: nouvelle victoire de l’Italienne Goggia en descente \u00e0 Cortina<\/a>*) whilst another win, this time by Marco Fassinotti<\/strong> in the high jump meeting in Cologne, that was the focus in a piece in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung<\/em> (January 24 – Italiener Fassinotti gewinnt K\u00f6lner Hochsprung-Meeting<\/a>). It was however the passing, at the grand age of 102, of the first Italian woman gymnast to win a medal \u2013 in the 1928 Olympics \u2013 that featured in El Mundo<\/em> (January 20 – Muere en Italia a los 102 a\u00f1os la medallista ol\u00edmpica de mayor edad<\/a>).<\/p>\n
