Italy: growth and creativity<\/strong> \u2013 2017 was the year in which the Italian economy recovered and the Financial Times<\/em> summed up the last 12 months and commented on the positive prospects of the country\u2019s GDP as revealed in an interview with Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni <\/strong>(December 13 – Italy\u2019s Gentiloni warns European integration is in danger<\/a>). The British daily paper also wrote about how Emilia Romagna <\/strong>is the region to look at when it comes to Europe\u2019s innovative trends and how it showcases the excellence of Italian manufacturing and the creativity that is behind the country\u2019s growth (December 12 – Europe\u2019s innovation comeback: creativity drives Italy\u2019s growth story<\/a>*).  <\/strong><\/p>\n

Leading Figures<\/strong> – Several famous Italians featured in the foreign press this week. El Pa\u00eds<\/em> featured an interview with Alessandro Sartori<\/strong>, \u201cthe most powerful fashion designer of the day\u201d who, as the Artistic Director of Ermenegildo Zegna, “translates the rigor of the today\u2019s man on the street\u201d (December 15 – Este italiano sabe c\u00f3mo debe vestir un hombre hoy<\/a>). Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> printed a couple of articles on other leading Italians, with a feature about the author and journalist Lucetta Scaraffia<\/strong>  (December 7- Lucetta Scaraffia, ex cathedra<\/a>*), and a long interview with busy photographer Oliviero Toscani <\/strong>and his part in the new Benetton campaign focusing on migration on integration (December 12 – Oliviero Toscani : \u00abLes migrants, je veux aller les chercher\u00bb<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The New York Times <\/em>wrote about the passing of the artist Enrico Castellani<\/strong> (December 12 – Enrico Castellani, Artist in the Postwar Avant-Garde, Dies at 87<\/a> ) and  The Guardian<\/em> looked back on the story of Toni Mascolo<\/strong>, who co- founded the UK hairdressing chain that started out as an adventure based in one small salon in London and went on to enjoy worldwide success (December 12 – Toni & Guy co-founder Giuseppe Toni Mascolo dies aged 75<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Several articles this week featured Italian culture.  They focused the triumphant return of \u201cAndrea Chernier\u201d to  La<\/strong> Scala <\/strong>with a first night that produced  \u201csome of the finest singing\u201d Milan has heard in a long time (Washington Post<\/em>, December 7 – \u2018Andrea Chernier\u2019 makes triumphant return to La Scala<\/a>*; El Pa\u00eds<\/em>, December 8 – Una eficaz Andrea Ch\u00e9nier abre la temporada de La Scala<\/a>). Le Monde<\/em> was also in Milan, with a piece about the new exhibition mounted by the Prada Foundation<\/strong> and the support it provides artists whose politics mean they receive no support from the institutions in their country of origin (December 7 – Arts : \u00e0 Milan, l\u2019art du coup de poing made in Chicago<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

Italy featured in the New York Times<\/em> Book Review that looked at the intimate family portrait unveiled in \u201cThe Remarkable Story of an Italian Mother, Her Two Sons, and Their Fight Against Fascism\u201d featuring the Rosselli family from Florence (December 8 – The Remarkable Story of an Italian Mother, Her Two Sons, and Their Fight Against Fascism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Popular culture \u2013 of the kind introduced by thousands of emigrant workers \u2013 was the focus of an article in Lib\u00e9ratio<\/em>n that described  the influence of  the many Italians who moved to S\u00e8te, <\/strong>on the French city\u2019s daily life, its food and other traditions (December 8 – S\u00e8te, dolce cit\u00e9<\/a>*). The food blog in Austria\u2019s Der Standard<\/em> on the other hand, wrote about a Lombardy classic called \u201cusei scap\u00e1\u201d in which the main ingredient is small wild birds (December 12 – Usei Scap\u00e0: Lombardische Fleischrouladen mit Salbei und Speck<\/a>).<\/p>\n
