Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Several culturally inspired articles appeared in the international press this week. Les Echos<\/em> was in Venice for the Dance Biennial<\/strong> declaring that the exhibition had really \u201ctaken off\u201d  (June 29 \u2013 A la Biennale de Venise la danse prend le large<\/a>*) and El Pa\u00eds<\/em> explained how the Rome Opera<\/strong> was taking Don Giovanni out into the city\u2019s suburbs thanks to a transportable stage (July 2 – La \u00f3pera se mete en un cami\u00f3n en busca del vecino de la periferia<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Cinema also got a mention with the passing of much loved actor and \u201cpopular genial icon\u201d Paolo Villaggio,<\/strong> who was featured in El Pa\u00eds<\/em>, Le Monde<\/em> and L\u2019Orient-Le Jour <\/em>(July 4 – Adi\u00f3s Fantozzi, entra\u00f1able h\u00e9roe vil de la clase trabajadora<\/a>; Paolo Villaggio, acteur f\u00e9tiche de la com\u00e9die italienne, est mort<\/a>*; L’acteur comique italien Paolo Villaggio est mort<\/a>). France\u2019s Lib\u00e9ration<\/em>, on the other hand, was excited to meet the Italian actress and \u201cperformer\u201d Asia Argento<\/strong> (July 4 – ASIA ARGENTO, LES INFORTUNES DE LA VERTU<\/a>). And the German language papers were celebrating Italy\u2019s answer to Marilyn Monroe – Gina Lollobrigida \u2013 on the occasion of her 90th birthday (on July 4 in Handelsblatt<\/em> – Gina Lollobrigida wird 90<\/a> and the Sueddeutsche Zeitung<\/em> –\u201cLa Lollo” wei\u00df immer noch zu feiern<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Science <\/strong>was another topic to appear in the foreign press, with El Pa\u00eds<\/em> writing about the composition of cement in the days of Ancient Rome, noting how very resistant it was to water (July 3 – Descubierto el ingrediente secreto que explica la fuerza del hormig\u00f3n de la antigua Roma<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Reuters<\/em>, the New York Times<\/em> and die Zeit<\/em> however, were all on the slopes of Mt. Etna to find out about an international project that is testing new lunar robots (July 4 – Lunar robots put to the test on Sicily’s Mount Etna<\/a>; Lunar Robots Put to the Test on Sicily’s Mount Etna<\/a>; Forscher proben f\u00fcr die Mondmission<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Fashion and Style<\/strong> \u2013 also featured this week with Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> writing about the latest Pitti Uomo<\/strong> shows in a Florence where \u201cextraordinarily elegant men\u201d could be spotted amongst the tourists (July 3 – LE PITTI, HOT SPOT DE LA MODE MASCULINE<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Other papers were keen to celebrate the birthday of Italy\u2019s most famous and iconic car, the Fiat 500,<\/strong> which, thanks to the success of its new look some 60 years after it first appeared, is now aiming to take on the premium segment of the market. (Les Echos<\/em>, July 3 – Fiat 500 : la douce recette d’un succ\u00e8s<\/a>;  Expansi\u00f3n,<\/em> July 4 – El Fiat 500 o Cinquecento cumple 60 a\u00f1os como el coche italiano m\u00e1s ic\u00f3nico<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Tourism <\/strong>is an obligatory summer topic and a photographic gallery in The Guardian<\/em> showed the most recent Palio in Siena<\/strong> (July 3 – Palio di Siena horse race \u2013 in pictures<\/a>), whilst El Pa\u00eds<\/em> was busy exploring two new fashion districts in Rome<\/strong>, Ostiense and Garbatella, where factories \u201chave left space for museums and cultural centers\u201d to spring up (June 30 – Dos barrios alternativos de Roma que est\u00e1n de moda<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The usual luxury property section of the Wall Street Journal<\/em> suggested readers might want to consider buying on particular property in Tuscany<\/strong> (June 29 – A Tuscan Villa With an Artistic Pedigree<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

Food & Wine <\/strong>\u2013 This section of Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> featured the Messina family from Cefal\u00f9 and its commitment to sharing all the many aspects of the island\u2019s food culture in their Paris eateries (June 30 –FAMILLE MESSINA, L\u2019\u00c9PATE \u00c0 LA SICILIENNE<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The New York Times<\/em> explained, in its food blog, City Kitchen<\/em>, why it would be so hard to imagine Sicilian cuisine without eggplants (June 30- Eggplant Favorites, Rooted in Sicily<\/a>*). Der Standard<\/em>,\u2019s  A modo mio <\/em>section paid tribute to the ever popular pasta dish, bucatini all’amatriciana (July 4 \u2013Bucatini all\u2019amatriciana: Rustikales Nudelgericht<\/a><\/span>). The Financial Times<\/em>\u2019 expert Rachel Roddy, on the other hand, provided readers with suggestions on where to eat typical Roman fare (June 30 – My addresses: food writer Rachel Roddy on Rome<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

And to conclude this week\u2019s press round up, the success that the Italian coffee brand, Lavazza<\/strong>, is currently enjoying in many places around the world, and it\u2019s growing international presence, was the subject of an article that appeared in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung<\/em> (July 3 \u2013 Kaffee aus der Wolke<\/a>).<\/p>\n
