{"id":72538,"date":"2017-05-03T17:08:17","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T15:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/pin\/week-april-21-27-0\/"},"modified":"2017-05-03T17:08:17","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T15:08:17","slug":"week-april-21-27-0","status":"publish","type":"pin","link":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/pin\/week-april-21-27-0\/","title":{"rendered":"The week of April 21 &#8211; 27"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Economy<\/strong> \u2013 This week\u2019s financial news has focused on the international growth of a few of Italy\u2019s leading companies. <em>Les Echos<\/em>, wrote about how <strong>Fincantieri,<\/strong> the construction giant that has just bought France\u2019s Sainte Nazaire has \u201ca tail wind\u201d pushing it forwards (April 24 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/industrie-services\/tourisme-transport\/0211963003637-fincantieri-litalien-qui-a-le-vent-en-poupe-2081827.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fincantieri, l&#8217;italien qui a le vent en poupe<\/a>*) , and the <em>Financial Times<\/em> analyzed the 2.5 billion international investment plan recently announced by Enel &#8211; the biggest generator of energy in Europe (April 24 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b8463eb0-26b7-11e7-a34a-538b4cb30025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enel chief backs renewables in spite of Trump<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leading Figures <\/strong>\u2013 Several Italians, well known in cultural or political circles, have made it into the foreign press this week. The <em>Financial Times<\/em> featured an extensive interview with <strong>Emma Bonino<\/strong> in which the woman who has come to symbolize what it means to be a civil rights activist, talked about her life and explained what makes her small Rome apartment so special (April 19 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/76f01d5c-1ecc-11e7-b7d3-163f5a7f229c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018One of Italy\u2019s greats\u2019: maverick politician and activist Emma Bonino<\/a>*). Italian cinema was the focus of Spain\u2019s <em>El Pas<\/em> in a piece all about <strong>Nanni Moretti, <\/strong>a guest star at the Bafici, Buenos Aries\u2019 film festival (April 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/cultura.elpais.com\/cultura\/2017\/04\/23\/actualidad\/1492902107_433433.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nanni Moretti: \u201cNo debemos pensar que el cine puede cambiar el mundo\u201d<\/a>) &nbsp;and <em>die Zeit<\/em> interviewed <strong>Luca Guadagnino<\/strong>, who directed \u2018I am love\u2019 (April 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeit.de\/zeit-magazin\/2017\/15\/luca-guadagnino-regisseur-i-am-love-mailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Die Sch\u00f6nheit liegt in den Hinterh\u00f6fen&#8221;<\/a>). From the world of Art, <strong>Maurizio<\/strong> <strong>Cattelan<\/strong> was the subject of an article in <em>New York Times, <\/em>reporting on the day spent in his company as he mooched around the Big Apple (April 20 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/20\/style\/maurizio-cattelan-whitney-museum.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maurizio Cattelan, Naughty as Ever, Plays Games and Tours the Whitney<\/a>*), whilst <em>die Welt<\/em> wrote about the scholarship that the Dresden Foundation for Art and Music has just awarded the visual artist, <strong>Marinella Salvatore<\/strong> (April 25 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welt.de\/regionales\/sachsen\/article164011445\/Kunststipendium-2017-fuer-Italienerin-Senatore.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kunststipendium 2017 f\u00fcr Italienerin Senatore<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Other news on this sector included the new climate controlled environment designed to protect and preserve da Vinci\u2019s \u201cLast Supper\u201d for the next 500 years, reported by <em>El Mundo<\/em> (April 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/cultura\/2017\/04\/20\/58f89eeee2704ec00c8b45f3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aire limpio para proteger &#8220;La \u00faltima cena&#8221; de Leonardo da Vinci<\/a>), whilst a piece in the New York Times spoke of <strong>Antonio Canova\u2019s <\/strong>sculpture of George Washington, currently on exhibition in the US for the first time ever (April 23 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/23\/nyregion\/george-washington-nude-statue.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finally, From Italy, the Full George Washington<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> \u2013 also generated articles with a cultural slant this week, with, for example, a piece in <em>Le Monde<\/em> that used the novels of Elena Ferrante as a guide to exploring <strong>Naples<\/strong> (April 25 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/m-perso\/article\/2017\/04\/25\/vous-aimez-elena-ferrante-vous-adorerez-naples_5117307_4497916.html#lW559cjyY5lLVTPv.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vous aimez Elena Ferrante, vous adorerez Naples<\/a>), whilst the <em>New York Times<\/em> took a look at Palermo, as seen through the eyes of the author Jaimi Attemberg (April 19 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/19\/travel\/palermo-sicily-jami-attenberg-friendship.html?mtrref=query.nytimes.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Sicily Cemented an Unlikely Friendship<\/a>). Another writer, Stephanie Danle, and her \u201ctasty\u201d cultural and culinary experiences in <strong>Sicily<\/strong>, were the subject of a piece in <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> (April 21 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elviajero.elpais.com\/elviajero\/2017\/04\/20\/actualidad\/1492683565_988198.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alcaparras y cusc\u00fas en Sicilia<\/a>) whilst another one this time in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, featured the island\u2019s capital and the story of its Jewish community \u2013 also describing a visit to St. Mary\u2019s of the Sabbath, the baroque oratorio that became Palermo\u2019s first synagogue (April 24 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/24\/world\/europe\/italy-jews-sicily-expulsion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">500 Years After Expulsion, Sicily\u2019s Jews Reclaim a Lost History<\/a>.) Moreover, the same paper shifted its focus north in another article, suggesting <strong>Genoa<\/strong> as a destination readers might want to consider, explaining that although it is nothing like Rome or Florence, it is a city that lent itself to individual exploration and enjoyment (April 25 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/04\/25\/travel\/genoa-italy-charm-alternative-rome-florence-venice.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genoa Isn\u2019t Rome or Florence. That\u2019s Part of Its Charm<\/a>). Meantime, the <em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em>, was in <strong>Lignano<\/strong> to take a look at somewhere that has been a popular destination for three generations of German tourists (April 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/reise\/adria-urlaub-fuer-drei-generationen-lignano-als-zweite-familien-heimat-14977282.html?printPagedArticle=true#pageIndex_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abwechslung wird auch \u00fcberbewertet<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>It was <strong>Rome, <\/strong>however, that featured in an article in the <em>Financial Times,<\/em> suggesting that anyone considering buying a property there might want to consider Trastevere, a fascinating neighborhood where prices are good (April 26 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/158d308a-25c1-11e7-a34a-538b4cb30025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why buyers seeking the \u2018real\u2019 Rome head for Trastevere<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food <\/strong>\u2013Austria\u2019s <em>Der Standard<\/em> wrote about the low fat, but \u201cguilty\u201d little gastronomic pleasures that are the <strong>Quarisimali fiorentini <\/strong>(April 25 <strong>&#8211;<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/derstandard.at\/2000056358770\/Quaresimali-Fiorentini-Fettarme-und-knusprige-Kekse-mit-Kakao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quaresimali Fiorentini: Fettarme und knusprige Kekse mit Kakao<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span> and New York\u2019s Enoteca Maria featured in a piece in the <em>Sueddeutsche Zeitung<\/em> that paid tribute to the Italian food tradition (April 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/stil\/besuch-in-der-enoteca-maria-in-new-york-in-diesem-restaurant-sind-grossmuetter-die-chefkoechinnen-1.3455191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In diesem Restaurant sind Gro\u00dfm\u00fctter die Chefk\u00f6chinnen<\/a>).
