\u201cWe saved the best for last\u201d \u2013 <\/strong>The American press shines the spotlight on the Obama presidency\u2019s final state dinner, dedicated to Italy. As the Associated Press <\/em>explains in an article run in the New York Times<\/em>, it was an event for the American president to \u201chonor Italy and its leader\u201d (October 18 – Obama Uses Final State Dinner to Honor Italy and Its Leader<\/a>). This relationship of friendship between Rome and Washington was in full evidence in Barack Obama\u2019s toast, transcribed in full by the Washington Post<\/em> (October 18 – Full Transcript: President Obama\u2019s toast at the Italian State Dinner<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe saved the best for last,\u201d declared the American president as he welcomed prime minister Matteo Renzi and the Italian delegation. According to the New York Times, <\/em>Obama \u201cwasn\u2019t joking\u201d (October 18 – Obama: ‘We Saved the Best for Last’ at Final State Dinner<\/a>): in fact, alongside the guest list also featured in Time <\/em>magazine <\/em>(October 18 – Here\u2019s the Guest List for the Obamas\u2019 Final State Dinner<\/a>), the newspaper recounts that everything at the gala was \u201cbig or bigger,\u201d starting with the menu supervised by Italian-American chef Mario Batali<\/strong> (New York Times<\/em>, October 16 – Mario Batali (Yes, in His Orange Crocs) to Prepare Obamas\u2019 Last State Dinner<\/a>*; Washington Post<\/em>, October 18 – For the Italy state dinner, Mario Batali and team work their magic with pasta<\/a>).
American newspapers also emphasized Michelle Obama\u2019s homage to Italian fashion, as she made a Versace<\/strong> gown her choice for the evening (Washington Post<\/em>, October 18 – At the final Obama state dinner, Versace\u2019s glamour shimmers<\/a>; Wall Street Journal<\/em>, October 18 – First Lady Michelle Obama Wears Versace Gown for Italy State Dinner<\/a>*).<\/p>\n

Culture<\/strong> \u2013 This week Italian culture is also prominently featured in the foreign press: while some publications are running new articles commemorating the life and works of Dario Fo<\/strong> (between October 13 and 16 in the Washington Post<\/em> – Dario Fo, Italian playwright and \u2018jester\u2019 who won Nobel Prize, dies at 90<\/a>; Le Monde<\/em> – L\u2019ultime surprise de Dario Fo<\/a>; El Pa\u00eds<\/em>, October 14 – Dario Fo, la estirpe del juglar moderno<\/a>*; El Pa\u00eds<\/em> – La otra cara de Dario Fo en cinco canciones<\/a>; Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em> – Dario Fo gestorben<\/a>; die Zeit – <\/em>Italienischer Literaturnobelpreistr\u00e4ger Dario Fo ist tot<\/a>; Sueddeutsche Zeitung <\/em>– <\/em>Clown und Nobelpreistr\u00e4ger – Dario Fo ist gestorben<\/a>; Dario Fo, ein Flegel, ein Nobelpreistr\u00e4ger<\/a>; Ein L\u00e4cheln f\u00fcr den Umsturz<\/a>), others concentrate on art, with the exhibition \u201cBeyond Caravaggio<\/strong>\u201d bringing together works by the Italian painter, first at London\u2019s National Gallery and then in Dublin and Edinburgh (The Guardian<\/em>, October 16 – Beyond Caravaggio review \u2013 the force of revelation<\/a>; Financial Times<\/em>, October 14 – Caravaggio: the light that never goes out<\/a>*). In the theatre world, there is coverage of Italian playwright Romeo Castellucci<\/strong>, on stage in Madrid with a new play entitled Go Down, Moses<\/em> (El Pa\u00eds<\/em>, October 13 – Romeo Castellucci: \u201cEl teatro nunca consuela\u201d<\/a>), and Marco D\u2019Amore<\/strong>, an actor who has transitioned from the television studio with Gomorra<\/em> to the stage with American Buffalo<\/em> (le Monde<\/em>, October 15 – Marco D\u2019Amore, l\u2019Italien qui ne r\u00eave pas d\u2019Am\u00e9rique<\/a>*). Music is also prominently featured, with an interview with Stefano Bollani<\/strong>, the Italian pianist who \u201cbreaks down the barriers between classical and jazz\u201d (El Pa\u00eds<\/em>, October 18 – Stefano Bollani: \u201cEl elitismo tiene los d\u00edas contados\u201d<\/a>), as is cinema, with a review of the \u201cItalian super-production\u201d dedicated to the House of Medici (El Pa\u00eds<\/em>, October 19 – \u2018Los Medici\u2019, banqueros, mecenas, estrellas de la televisi\u00f3n<\/a>).  <\/em><\/p>\n

The Guardian <\/em>interviews Carlo Rovelli<\/strong>, \u201ca pioneer in research into quantum gravity,\u201d on the success of his book Seven Brief Lessons on Physics<\/em> (October 16 – Carlo Rovelli: \u2018Science is where revolutions happen\u2019<\/a>). Lastly, also in publishing, el Mundo<\/em> marks the arrival in Italy of the Italian publishing house Planeta which, alongside DeAgostini, is launching DA Planeta Libri (October 14 – El Grupo Planeta entra en Italia<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Wine & food <\/strong>\u2013 A number of stories involve Italian cuisine: Washington Post <\/em>proposes recipes <\/em>from the restaurant Alta Strada in the United States capital (October 13 – Alta Strada review: Italian favorites, with a twist<\/a>), while the Guardian<\/em> reviews London\u2019s Mercato Metropolitano (October 16 – Mercato Metropolitano: restaurant review<\/a>). On the other hand \u2013 reports El Mundo<\/em> \u2013 the renowned Spanish chef Ferran Adri\u00e0 is coming to Italy, chosen as the culinary consultant for the new Lavazza <\/strong>location <\/strong>in Turin (October 18 – Ferran Adri\u00e0 desembarca en Tur\u00edn<\/a>). Lastly, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung <\/em>visits Naples to recount the origins of the Italian dish \u201cmost famous all over the world\u201d: pizza<\/strong> (October 20 – Woher kommt eigentlich die Pizza?<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Tourism <\/strong>\u2013 Tourism is also making the news, as Financial Times<\/em> recounts the \u201cmagic\u201d of alberghi diffusi<\/em>, \u201cscattered hotels,\u201d in Mascognaz in Val d\u2019Aosta<\/strong> (October 14 – High-altitude hideaways<\/a>*) while the Guardian<\/em> proposes different ways to sojourn in Italy free of charge, suggesting B&Bs that barter hospitality in exchange for goods and services, from social media consulting to olive picking (October 19 – Visitors to Italy can stay for free by sharing skills and goods<\/a>). Time<\/em>, on the other hand, encourages its readers to: “Stop what you\u2019re doing and start planning your next vacation”; the destination is Dora Sarchese in Abruzzo<\/strong>, where a fountain that flows with free wine has been installed (October 17 – An Italian Town Has a Miraculous Wine Fountain\u2014and It\u2019s Totally Free<\/a>). Author Frances Mayes then recounts how she decided to move to Tuscany <\/strong>(the Guardian<\/em>, October 18 – Under the Tuscan Sun: what writing the book taught me about taking risks<\/a>); a choice also made by Kotaro Miyahira, a Japanese entrepreneur who decided to live in Florence to open his own fashion boutique (Financial Times<\/em>, October 14 – The Japanese tailor who found his perfect fit in Florence<\/a>*).<\/p>\n
