{"id":72443,"date":"2016-09-19T11:54:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T09:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/pin\/week-september-9-15\/"},"modified":"2016-09-19T11:54:01","modified_gmt":"2016-09-19T09:54:01","slug":"week-september-9-15","status":"publish","type":"pin","link":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/pin\/week-september-9-15\/","title":{"rendered":"The week of September 9 \u2013 15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Economy \u2013 <\/strong>Financial news about Italy this week has focused on the plans for growth announced by major groups. <strong>Eni<\/strong>, for example has just made a 30 year deal with the government of Montenegro allowing it to research and extract hydrocarbons in the Adriatic (<em>Reuters<\/em>, September 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-montenegro-oil-contract-idUSKCN11K2DS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montenegro signs 30-year oil concession deal with Eni, Novatek<\/a>). However, it was <strong>Generali<\/strong> that featured in an article in France\u2019s <em>Les Echos<\/em> which set out its plans for future development (September 9 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/finance-marches\/banque-assurances\/0211274672286-generali-lance-un-nouveau-plan-de-developpement-en-italie-2026251.php?cRG8FqiqT9ZszRp8.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Generali lance un nouveau plan de d\u00e9veloppement en Italie<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Art &amp; design \u2013 <\/strong>There were several pieces involving art and design this week. <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> wrote about the inflatable boats that can be seen on the facade of the <strong>Palazzo Strozzi<\/strong> in Florence as part of the exhibition about to open there dedicated to the work of Ai Wewei (September 15 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/cultura.elpais.com\/cultura\/2016\/09\/14\/actualidad\/1473872060_935852.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ai Weiwei cuelga lanchas del Palazzo Strozzi<\/a>). Meanwhile the <em>New York Times<\/em> had so-called \u201c<strong>Arte Povera<\/strong>\u201d on its mind, running a piece about two American collectors of the genre about to open a space, in the state of New York, dedicated to the subject (September 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/16\/arts\/design\/you-dont-know-what-arte-povera-is-they-can-change-that.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You Don\u2019t Know What Arte Povera Is? They Can Change That<\/a>*). The same paper featured another article on Italian art, the Cab chair, by <strong>Mario Bellini<\/strong>, which New York\u2019s MoMa has described as one of the most significant pieces of 20th century furniture (September 9 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/11defc16-6f82-11e6-a0c9-1365ce54b926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Design classic: Mario Bellini\u2019s Cab chair<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>There is also a significant Italian connection in the massive sculpture known as \u201cVessel\u201d that it was made in Monfalcone although it will eventually make its way to a recently created district of New York (news and photos September 14 &#8211; <em>New York Times<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/15\/arts\/design\/hudson-yards-own-social-climbing-stairway.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A $150 Million Stairway to Nowhere on the Far West Side<\/a>; <em>Bloomberg Business<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-09-14\/related-unveils-design-for-towering-heatherwick-vessel-in-hudson-yards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Related Unveils Design for Towering $150 Million &#8216;Vessel&#8217; in Hudson Yards<\/a>; <em>Washington Post<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/nyc-unveils-massive-new-sculpture-for-public-space-project\/2016\/09\/14\/1be58fda-7a91-11e6-8064-c1ddc8a724bb_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plans for huge sculpture in New York public plaza unveiled<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> \u2013 A subject always featured in the news somewhere is tourism with <em>le Monde<\/em> that was in <strong>Pompeii<\/strong> to talk about the way new technology is able to show us what life was like in the Roman city at the foot of Vesuvius before disaster struck (September 9 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/televisions-radio\/article\/2016\/09\/09\/pompei-la-vie-revelee-au-scanner_4994994_1655027.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pomp\u00e9i, la vie r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e au scanner<\/a>*). On the other hand the <em>New York Times<\/em> told readers about the \u201cculinary secrets\u201d of <strong>Norcia<\/strong> (September 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/14\/dining\/umbria-italy-food-cooking.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Umbria, Italy\u2019s Best-Kept Culinary Secret, Is Budding<\/a>*). Moreover, a beautiful sunrise over Mont Blanc featured in the <em>Financial Times <\/em>in its web-based Photo Diary (September 9 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/940b11d0-c6f5-3db0-8a05-e31d491e1809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mont Blanc sunrise<\/a>) whilst the luxury property for sale section of the print edition featured a villa for sale in the hills around Lucca (September 9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2b305fcc-6f94-11e6-a0c9-1365ce54b926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8211; Five homes for sale with formal gardens<\/a>). For <em>Bloomberg <\/em>it was the tortuous roads around <strong>Lake Garda<\/strong> that kept the reporter testing Maserati\u2019s new SUV busy (September 12 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2016-drive-maserati-levante-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conquer the Hills of Italy in a Maserati Levante<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leading figures<\/strong> \u2013 Two Italians featured in separate <em>New York Times<\/em> articles the first, <strong>Daniele Gatti<\/strong>, who has just been appointed Chief Conductor for Amsterdam\u2019s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (September 11 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/11\/arts\/music\/daniele-gatti-conductor-royal-concertgebouw.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniele Gatti, Creative Risk-Taker, Picks Up Baton at Royal Concertgebouw<\/a>*) whilst the second was all about <strong>Isabella Dalla Ragione<\/strong>, sometimes described as \u201can arboreal archaeologist\u201d, who saves Umbria\u2019s ancient species of trees from becoming extinct (September 11 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/12\/world\/europe\/italian-grows-forgotten-fruit-what-she-preserves-is-a-culture.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Grows Forgotten Fruit.
