{"id":72439,"date":"2016-09-09T11:02:08","date_gmt":"2016-09-09T09:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/pin\/week-8-14-july\/"},"modified":"2016-09-09T11:02:08","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T09:02:08","slug":"week-8-14-july","status":"publish","type":"pin","link":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/pin\/week-8-14-july\/","title":{"rendered":"The week of 8 \u2013 14 July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Economy<\/strong> \u2013 There have been several reports this week about companies choosing to invest in Italy over the next few months.&nbsp; At least, that is what Keith Breslauer, the MD of London\u2019s Patron Capital Partners \u2013 that deals mostly in restructuring and undervalued assets &#8211;&nbsp; told <em>Bloomberg <\/em>on 12 July (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-07-12\/italy-beats-brexit-as-private-equity-opportunity-patron-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy Beats Brexit as Private-Equity Strategy, Patron Says<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>. The very next day, the same agency wrote about another company, this time American, interested in the Italian market, namely Starbucks and its decision to invest in&nbsp; <strong>Princi<\/strong>, thereby increasing its&nbsp; involvement in the catering industry (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-07-13\/starbucks-invests-in-italian-bakery-as-reliance-on-food-grows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Starbucks Invests in Italian Bakery as Reliance on Food Grows<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>. In other coffee news, reported by <em>Reuters<\/em> on 12 July, costing 74.5 million Euros, Portugal\u2019s Nutricafes Euros, has just made the <strong>Massimo Zanetti<\/strong> beverage group even bigger (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/massimozanetti-ma-nutricafes-idUSI6N19S008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian coffee group Massimo Zanetti buys Portuguese Nutricafes<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>. It was the luxury sector that got the attention of&nbsp; Spanish financial daily <em>Expansion <\/em>in&nbsp; an article, on 11 July, describing a visit to the <strong>Marcolin <\/strong>factory&nbsp; where some 14 million frames for spectacles by some of the world\u2019s leading fashion houses are made each year (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/fueradeserie\/moda-y-caprichos\/2016\/07\/11\/577f6676e5fdea757f8b4667.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As\u00ed se trabaja en Marcolin, la f\u00e1brica italiana de donde salen las gafas de lujo<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Milan\u2019s Stock Exchange also made the news when <strong>ENAV<\/strong> became the first air traffic control agency in Europe to be listed, as reported in two German papers on 8 July: the <em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/wirtschaft\/privatisierung-italien-bringt-flugsicherung-enav-an-die-boerse-14330387.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italien bringt Flugsicherung an die B\u00f6rse<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span> and <em>Handelsblatt<\/em>, (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.handelsblatt.com\/finanzen\/maerkte\/aktien\/enav-boersengang-italien-bringt-flugsicherung-in-startposition\/13848634.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italien bringt Flugsicherung in Startposition<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Books took up most of the cultural news this week, with <em>Le Monde<\/em> writing, on 13 July, about <strong>Primo Levi<\/strong> and his book, \u201cLa tregua\u201d &#8211; The Truce &#8211; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/livres\/article\/2016\/07\/13\/primo-levi-maitre-du-savoir-revivre-par-ivan-jablonka_4968779_3260.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Primo Levi, ma\u00eetre du savoir-revivre<\/a>*) and the <em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em> on 11 July about Prof. <strong>Francesco Traniello\u2019s <\/strong>work exploring the history of Italy&nbsp; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/politik\/politische-buecher\/italien-und-seine-katholiken-zeugnis-des-beichtvaters-14323881.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zeugnis des Beichvaters<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>. Cinema also got a mention however, with an account in the 9 July Edition of <em>Le Monde<\/em>, of the de La Rochelle Film Festival and its celebration of&nbsp; <strong>Alberto Sordi<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/culture\/article\/2016\/07\/09\/le-festival-de-la-rochelle-celebre-le-jeu-de-bascule-d-alberto-sordi_4966882_3246.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le festival de La Rochelle c\u00e9l\u00e8bre le jeu de bascule d\u2019Alberto Sordi<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fashion &amp; Design<\/strong> \u2013 These two sectors continue to pique much attention in the world\u2019s press and on 10 July, the&nbsp; <em>Financial Times<\/em> described the <strong>Dolce &amp; Gabbana<\/strong> fashion show staged in the streets of Naples (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/cd390da8-463d-11e6-8d68-72e9211e86ab.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dolce &amp; Gabbana Alta Moda Naples show report<\/a>*), whereas on 8 July, the <em>New York Times<\/em> wrote about the latest <strong>Fendi<\/strong> collections presented against the backdrop of the Trevi Fountain in Rome (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/09\/fashion\/couture-fendi-karl-lagerfeld.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fendi\u2019s Dolce Vita<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>Some of the sector\u2019s high profile protagonists also got a mention: the recent appointment of&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>Marco Gobbetti<\/strong> as CEO for Burberry was the focus of an article in the&nbsp; <em>Financial Times <\/em>on 11 July (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/fastft\/2016\/07\/11\/burberry-hires-gobbetti-as-new-ceo-from-celine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burberry hires Gobbetti as new CEO from C\u00e9line<\/a>*), whilst for <em>Expansion<\/em>, on 8 July, it was&nbsp; the secrets of success according to designer <strong>Fabio Novembre <\/strong>that was of interest (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/fueradeserie\/personajes\/2016\/07\/08\/577ba677268e3e21128b45ca.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fabio Novembre, el arquitecto que se inspira en las curvas femeninas<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> \u2013 It was the luxury end of Italian vacations that attracted the most attention in this week\u2019s international papers.&nbsp; On 8 July, the&nbsp; <em>Financial Times<\/em>,&nbsp; visited the <strong>&nbsp;Lamborghini Museum, <\/strong>recently renovated in honor of the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the first \u201csupercar\u201d (<a href=\"#axzz4ECBEvesF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Postcard from\u2026\u2018Motor Valley\u2019<\/a>*). A day earlier, it was the Palazzo Dona Sangiantoffetti &#8211;&nbsp; a \u201cgem\u201d of a property in Venice \u2013 on sale for 10 million Euros that featured in the Real Estate section of the&nbsp; <em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/08\/realestate\/saving-a-relatively-tiny-gem-in-venice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saving a (Relatively) Tiny Gem in Venice<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>, whilst on 8 July, the same paper was in a chic district of <strong>Milan<\/strong> to review the Hotel LaGare, located just a stone\u2019s throw from Milan\u2019s Central Station (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/10\/travel\/milan-hotel-lagare-milano.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In Fashionable Milan, a Hotel Dressed in (What Else?) Black.<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>*.
