In the preceding weeks however, it was the economy, especially investments that took up the most column inches. <strong>Ryanair<\/strong>\u2019s plans to increase its traffic on the Italian market to the tune of one billion dollars was of particular interest (<em>Financial<\/em> <em>Times, <\/em>August 17 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/fastft\/2016\/08\/17\/ryanairs-1bn-italian-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryanair\u2019s $1bn Italian Job<\/a>*; <em>Reuters, <\/em>August 17 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/italy-ryanair-idUSL8N1AY4DT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryanair hikes Italy investment after govt does tax U-turn<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>. Asian investors are also showing a keen interest in Italy at the moment, as seen in purchase of <strong>AC Milan<\/strong> for more than 800 million dollars by China\u2019s Suning Group (<em>Wall Street Journal, <\/em>August 5 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-nets-italys-ac-milan-soccer-club-1470402720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China Nets Italy\u2019s AC Milan Soccer Club<\/a>*).&nbsp; More proof of Italy\u2019s appeal in the East can also be evinced from the offers made for the pharmaceutical company <strong>Recordati,<\/strong> reported<strong> <\/strong>by<strong> <\/strong><em>Bloomberg<\/em> (August 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-08-01\/family-owned-recordati-said-to-weigh-options-amid-asian-interest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy\u2019s Recordati Said to Weigh Options Amid Asian Interest<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, several of Italy\u2019s large industrial groups made international news in August. <em>Wall<\/em> <em>Street Journal<\/em> wrote about <strong>Giovanni Ferrero\u2019s<\/strong> plans to relaunch one of the country\u2019s great confectionary companies (August 8 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ferreros-new-ceo-picks-up-the-pace-at-the-chocolate-maker-1470683495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrero\u2019s CEO Picks Up the Pace at the Chocolate Maker<\/a>*). Moreover, it reported on the excellent economic results currently being enjoyed by the automobile industry, with <strong>Ferrari<\/strong>\u2019s quarterly profits flying high (<em>Wall<\/em> <em>Street Journal,<\/em> August 2 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ferrari-profit-jumps-as-more-cars-ship-1470146936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrari Profit Jumps as More Cars Ship<\/a>*). Its major holding company \u2013 <strong>Exor<\/strong> \u2013 is also showing a consistent increase in earnings, thanks in part to FCA doubling its profits (<em>Wall Street Journal,<\/em> August 29 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/exor-profit-jumps-on-fiat-chrysler-results-1472480677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exor Profit Jumps on Fiat Chrysler Results<\/a>*). Another Italian auto giant, <strong>Lamborghini, <\/strong>concentrates on the future, hoping to double its sales by 2019 by appealing more to women and families. (<em>New York Times, <\/em>August 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/2016\/08\/23\/business\/23reuters-autos-lamborghini.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lamborghini Sees Worldwide Sales Doubling by 2019 After SUV Launch<\/a>*; <em>Bloomberg, <\/em>August 30 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-08-30\/lamborghini-pivots-to-target-women-and-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lamborghini Pivots to Target Women and Families<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>There has also been much written about luxury properties on the market in Italy, with villas and old farmhouses for sale in <strong>Umbria<\/strong> (<em>Wall Street Journal,<\/em> August 15 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/an-italian-farmhouse-rebooted-1471253754\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An Italian Farmhouse, Rebooted<\/a>* and August 29 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/an-italian-villa-with-a-french-touch-1472464697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An Italian Villa With a French Touch<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span> and also in <strong>Tuscany <\/strong>(<em>New York Times,<\/em> July 28 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/29\/realestate\/a-family-in-italy-decides-to-part-with-its-castle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Family in Italy Decides to Part With Its Castle<\/a>* and August 18 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/19\/realestate\/michelangelos-tuscan-hillside-retreat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michelangelo\u2019s Tuscan Hillside Retreat<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture \u2013 <\/strong>Interest in Italian culture never wanes. As <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> commented, even Cervantes made his way to Italy, the artistic Mecca of his era, looking for inspiration (August 4- <a href=\"http:\/\/cultura.elpais.com\/cultura\/2016\/08\/01\/actualidad\/1470072548_073615.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cervantes: suspiros de Italia<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>. A much more recent visitor, US writer Donna Leon whose detective stories are set in <strong>Venice<\/strong>, also merited a write up (<em>Les Echos<\/em>, August 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/week-end\/culture\/livres\/0211209197397-commissaire-brunetti-le-maigret-venitien-2022474.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le flic de l&#8217;\u00e9t\u00e9 : Commissaire Brunetti, le Maigret v\u00e9nitien<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>.&nbsp; Music also made the news, with a piece in <em>Le Monde<\/em> on the \u201cViale dei Canti\u201d,&nbsp; the latest multi-media work on show at the <strong>Italian Institute of Culture in Paris<\/strong> (July 30 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/culture\/article\/2016\/07\/30\/le-mur-a-l-italienne_4976549_3246.html#wE7ui8l1f4S3cB3j.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le mur \u00e0 l\u2019italienne, au c\u0153ur de Paris<\/a>*), other newspapers wrote about music with an article on the <strong>Rossini Festival<\/strong> in Pesaro (<em>Financial Times, <\/em>August 12 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/cc3c98f6-5e26-11e6-bb77-a121aa8abd95.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La donna del lago, Rossini Festival, Pesaro, Italy \u2014 review<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span> and on the works of <strong>Puccini,<\/strong> one of the composers featured in New York\u2019s Bard Music Festival (<em>Wall Street Journal,<\/em> August 3 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/giacomo-puccini-controversial-composer-1470257686\">Giacomo Puccini: Controversial Composer?<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>. However, <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> was all about much more contemporary Italian music, specifically <strong>Talco<\/strong>, \u201cthe leading ska band in Europe\u201d (August 2 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2016\/08\/01\/tentaciones\/1470045350_186444.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El ska italiano que ama a Ringo Starr<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The figurative arts have also been well represented, with a piece in the <em>New York Times<\/em> all about the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century artist, <strong>Giovanni Della Robbia<\/strong> (August 18 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/19\/arts\/design\/the-art-of-della-robbia-from-earth-and-water-pure-beauty.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Art of Della Robbia: From Earth and Water, Pure Beauty<\/a>*) while the <em>Financial Times<\/em> told its readers about an exhibition mounted within the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice devoted to Italian art in the 60s (August 2 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/102c61f6-5281-11e6-9664-e0bdc13c3bef.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imagine: New Imagery in Italian Art 1960-1969, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice \u2014 review<\/a>*). The <em>Guardian<\/em> ran an article on Venice scene for the Oscars thanks to the opening of the <strong>73<sup>rd<\/sup> International Film Festival<\/strong> (August 30 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2016\/aug\/30\/venice-film-festival-hollywoods-oscars-launchpad-la-la-land\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venice film festival: Hollywood looks to Italy for Oscars launchpad<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At least a couple of articles on science are also of interest with the <em>Financial Times<\/em> featured a long, all-encompassing interview with <strong>Carlo Rovelli<\/strong> , the Italian physicist with a reputation for making even the most complex science understandable for the rest of us (August 12 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/59e2dd44-5e1a-11e6-a72a-bd4bf1198c63.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lunch with the FT: Carlo Rovelli<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>. Lastly <em>les Echos<\/em>, explained something of the history of economics in an article all about <strong>Luca Pacioli,<\/strong> the Franciscan monk deemed to be \u201cthe father\u201d of modern accounting methods (July 29 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/idees-debats\/sciences-prospective\/0211094963955-luca-pacioli-le-pere-de-la-comptabilite-2017613.php?OctomX1AOi4d4OQh.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luca Pacioli, le \u00abp\u00e8re\u00bb de la comptabilit\u00e9<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food &amp; Wine <\/strong><strong>proved to be a popular subject this summer. Many articles were written about how the famous pasta dish \u201call\u2019Amatriciana\u201d born in the earthquake-stricken town of Amatrice, is being sold in restaurants to raise money for the victims. The <\/strong><em>New York Times<\/em> told its readers about local restaurants involved (August 26 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/26\/dining\/pasta-all-amatriciana-italy-earthquake-fundraiser-nyc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pasta From New York Restaurants Aids in Earthquake Relief<\/a>*, whilst <em>Le Nouvel Observateur<\/em> on August 27 described the success this idea is enjoying in Italy itself &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/tempsreel.nouvelobs.com\/l-histoire-du-soir\/20160827.OBS6960\/ils-mangent-des-pates-pour-aider-les-victimes-du-seisme-en-italie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ils mangent des p\u00e2tes pour aider les victimes du s\u00e9isme en Italie<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em>. Other papers featured a variety of Italian recipes; from a tuna-based sauce (<em>Financial Times,<\/em> August 26 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/e3cd3310-6982-11e6-ae5b-a7cc5dd5a28c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recipe \u2014 tuna dip, broccoli, potato and eggs<\/a>*), to a traditional blueberry risotto from Alto Adige (<em>Washington Post,<\/em> August 9 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/food\/smitten-with-summer-fruit-a-young-mans-thoughts-turn-to----risotto\/2016\/08\/08\/d7d4987c-5731-11e6-831d-0324760ca856_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smitten with summer fruit, a young man\u2019s thoughts turn to . . . risotto?<\/a>). The huge appeal of traditional Italian cuisine was demonstrated by the thousands of people who queued for the opening of the new <strong>Eataly<\/strong> shop in New York (<em>Bloomberg, <\/em><em>August<\/em> 16 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-08-16\/roman-pizza-is-the-best-dish-at-the-new-eataly-nyc-downtown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here&#8217;s Why 15,000 People Lined Up at Eataly Last Week<\/a>*). The best of Italian food also made its way to the Rio Olympics thanks to <strong>Massimo Bottura<\/strong>, chef of the Osteria Francescana, (<em>Expansi\u00f3n,<\/em> August 16 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/directivos\/estilo-vida\/rincones-gastronomicos\/2016\/08\/16\/57b2d9c8e2704e02578b4570.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El &#8216;pop up&#8217; de Massimo Bottura en R\u00edo<\/a>). The same paper also told its readers where to sample good Italian food in Santander (July 27 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/directivos\/estilo-vida\/rincones-gastronomicos\/2016\/07\/27\/57988229268e3ee9088b457f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Italiano, cocina alpina en Santander<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Italian wine attracted no less attention. The <em>New York Times<\/em> was exploring wines from the slopes of <strong>Mt. Etna<\/strong> (August 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/28\/travel\/italy-sicily-mount-etna.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sicily\u2019s Mount Etna, an Island Within an Island<\/a> and August 25 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/31\/dining\/organic-wine-frank-cornelissen-sicily.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Evolution of a Natural Winemaker<\/a>), whilst the <em>Financial Times<\/em> was concentrating on Tuscan wine in a profile piece and interview with <strong>Lamberto Frescobaldi<\/strong> (August 17 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/2\/26104f1e-5ef2-11e6-bb77-a121aa8abd95.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lamberto Frescobaldi, head of a Florentine winemaking dynasty<\/a>*). Food and wine exploration in the <strong>Cinque Terre<\/strong>, described as \u201ca delight for hikers, foodies and wine enthusiasts\u201d (<em>New York Times<\/em>, September 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2016\/09\/01\/travel\/what-to-do-36-hours-in-the-cinque-terre-italy.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">36 Hours in the Cinque Terre, Italy<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It was cocktails that grabbed the attention of <em>Bloomberg<\/em> however, with two articles on the subject The first was about the Campari based \u201cGaribaldi\u201d (August 17 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-08-17\/perfect-summer-cocktail-the-garibaldi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Garibaldi Is The Perfect Summer Cocktail<\/a>), whilst the second, featured <strong>Fernet Branca <\/strong><strong>and its growing world-appeal (<\/strong>August 30 <strong>&#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-08-30\/fernet-branca-is-the-bitter-darling-of-the-cocktail-world-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cocktail Culture Is Officially Sweet on Bitter Fernet-Branca<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fashion<\/strong> \u2013 This subject, along with Italian cuisine, it is the one most featured by the international press to explore the Italian way of life. The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> wrote about the foundation set up by <strong>Giorgio Armani <\/strong><strong>as a way of ensuring his label\u2019s future (July 31 <\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/giorgio-armani-announces-foundation-to-protect-his-house-1470068542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giorgio Armani Lays Groundwork for Future of His Fashion House<\/a>*). The 30 years of <strong>Dolce &amp; Gabbana<\/strong> featured in <em>Les Echos<\/em> (August 26 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/week-end\/mode-et-beaute\/actualites\/0211225323002-dolce-gabbana-une-ambition-a-litalienne-2022991.php?wev0t2Y9llcBOkQF.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dolce &amp; Gabbana : une ambition \u00e0 l\u2019italienne<\/a>*). While <em>Reuters<\/em> described the reason behind the success of Italian handbag and accessories maker <strong>Furla<\/strong> (September 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/italy-luxury-furla-idUSL8N1BD1BY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sales at Italy&#8217;s Furla grow 28 percent, boosted by tourist shopping<\/a>), Spain\u2019s <em>Expansi\u00f3n<\/em> got to grips with the starting point for a particular type of made in Italy luxury with a profile on <strong>Silvio Albini<\/strong>, head of Europe\u2019s biggest producer of textiles (<em>Expansi\u00f3n,<\/em> August 11 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/fueradeserie\/personajes\/2016\/08\/10\/57a4668746163f9d7e8b4580.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silvio Albini, el capo de las telas made in Italy<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Article available for pay \/ at registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Economy<\/strong> \u2013 For the last two weeks, correspondents of the world\u2019s leading newspapers have been focused on the earthquake that shook Central Italy on August 24.
