{"id":72414,"date":"2016-07-01T10:40:55","date_gmt":"2016-07-01T08:40:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/pin\/week-june-10-16\/"},"modified":"2016-07-01T10:40:55","modified_gmt":"2016-07-01T08:40:55","slug":"week-june-10-16","status":"publish","type":"pin","link":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/pin\/week-june-10-16\/","title":{"rendered":"The week of June 10 \u2013 16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Economy<\/strong> \u2013 This week there were several stories about the Italian economy in the International press.&nbsp; The <em>Financial Times <\/em>told of the unexpected good news regarding growth in the manufacturing sector (June 10 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/fastft\/2016\/06\/10\/italian-industrial-production-beats-forecast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian industrial production beats forecast<\/a>*), and in another article it ran another piece explaining how China\u2019s Agic Capital had just decided to invest in Italy\u2019s &nbsp;<strong>Gimatic <\/strong>&nbsp;(June 12 &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/6fefe06a-309c-11e6-bda0-04585c31b153.html#axzz4Bfn9Suut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Chinese fund buys Italian robot toolmaker<\/a>*). <em>Reuters<\/em>, on the other hand, published an interview with <strong>Alberto Vacchi<\/strong>, IMA\u2019s president, in which he spoke about the company\u2019s growth prospects (June 10 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ima-ma-idUSI6N18T00N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy&#8217;s IMA considers acquisition options abroad, nothing seen short term<\/a>). The photo-voltaic sector also made news, thanks to the decision by a British insurance company to invest 150 million Euros in Italy\u2019s solar industry (<em>Financial Times,<\/em> June 13 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/3540e5f8-3179-11e6-bda0-04585c31b153.html#axzz4Bfn9Suut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prudential raises its bet on green energy<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The best restaurant in the world <\/strong>\u2013 Italy\u2019s reputation for culinary excellence was confirmed this week, with various papers talking about the eatery owned by Massimo Bottura, the <strong>Osteria Francescana<\/strong>, recently named as the best restaurant in the world. (The <em>New York Times,<\/em> June 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/14\/dining\/world-s-50-best-restaurants-2016.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Osteria Francescana Tops List of World\u2019s 50 Best Restaurants<\/a>*; <em>Reuters<\/em>, June 15 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-food-50best-idUSKCN0Z00FA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy&#8217;s Osteria Francescana named world&#8217;s best restaurant<\/a>). Two French papers also covered the same story (<em>Les Echos,<\/em> June 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/week-end\/gastronomie-et-vins\/gastronomie\/0211027239823-gastronomie-la-meilleure-table-au-monde-est-italienne-2006306.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gastronomie : la meilleure table au monde est italienne<\/a>; <em>Le Nouvel Observateur<\/em>, June 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/o.nouvelobs.com\/food\/20160614.OBS2554\/5-choses-a-savoir-sur-massimo-bottura-elu-meilleur-restaurateur-du-monde.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 choses \u00e0 savoir sur Massimo Bottura, \u00e9lu meilleur restaurateur du monde<\/a>). The story also made the Spanish news, <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> added to the news by pointing out that the Italian restaurant had overtaken a Spanish competitor, the Can Roca (June 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2016\/06\/14\/estilo\/1465872985_724335.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Osteria Francescana desbanca al Celler de Can Roca como mejor restaurante del mundo<\/a>). In a separate piece on the same day, the paper also passed on the advice Bottura had to give about the best dishes that Italian cuisine has to offer (<a href=\"http:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2016\/06\/14\/icon\/1465899518_996847.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00bfLa pizza gal\u00e1ctica? El chef del mejor restaurante del mundo recomienda..<\/a>.).<\/p>\n<p>Over in the UK, <em>The Guardian<\/em> was not aiming quite as high, having asked its readers to write in with suggestions on where to find the best trattorias outside Italy\u2019s major cities as well as what to eat there &nbsp;(June 9 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2016\/jun\/09\/italy-trattoria-village-restaurants-food-readers-travel-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian village trattorias: readers\u2019 travel tips<\/a>). The <em>New York Times<\/em> also ran with an uncomplicated Italian specialty, writing about the secrets of taralli as an alternative to potato chips (June 10 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/15\/dining\/crackers-taralli-recipe-a16.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy\u2019s Answer to Potato Chips? Taralli, of Course<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture \u2013 <\/strong><em>Les Echos<\/em> featured a piece on one of Italy\u2019s major cultural events, the <strong>Venice Biennale (<\/strong>June 10 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/week-end\/culture\/expositions\/0211007939327-la-biennale-darchitecture-de-venise-en-questions-2005432.php?KHrh6PtiLfOLvads.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La biennale d\u2019architecture de Venise en questions<\/a>*). At the other end of the scale <em>Le Monde<\/em>, wrote about the exhibition of <strong>Arte Povera <\/strong>being &nbsp;held at the Pompidou Center in Paris (June 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/m-le-mag\/article\/2016\/06\/14\/l-arte-povera-resiste-aux-lois-du-marche_4949987_4500055.html#L7bbSdY1usZbFHyM.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u2019Arte Povera r\u00e9siste aux lois du march\u00e9<\/a>*). In a real mix of nations, Germany\u2019s &nbsp;<em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung <\/em>took in the exhibition dedicated to the Austrian capital, Vienna, staged in Milan and featuring that city\u2019s avante garde artists from the post WW2 period &nbsp;(June 13 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/feuilleton\/kunstmarkt\/italiens-kuenstler-beliebt-bei-auktionen-im-wiener-dorotheum-14279881.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mailands Avandgarde der Sechziger marschiert<\/a>). The <em>New York Times Magazine<\/em> featured the photographs taken by Stephen Shore in the rural town of Luzzara, in Emilia (June 14 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/13\/t-magazine\/art\/stephen-shore-italy-photography-book.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portraits of an Italian Town That Time (Almost) Left Behind<\/a>*), whilst <em>die Zeit<\/em> was much further south, exploring the cultural and touristic wonders of Palermo and <strong>Sicily<\/strong> (June 15 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeit.de\/entdecken\/reisen\/2016-05\/sizilien-italien-europa-reise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eine Reise nach Europa<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cinema &amp; Music<\/strong> \u2013 This week the <em>Financial Times<\/em> published its interview with <strong>Matteo Garrone<\/strong>, that also included a review on his latest film, \u201cThe story of stories\u201d (June 10 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/4544fd58-2bf3-11e6-bf8d-26294ad519fc.html?siteedition=intl#axzz4BRqVdcxa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interview: Italian director Matteo Garrone<\/a>*) whilst it was the 60th birthday of one of Italy\u2019s favorite and truly iconic female rock stars, <strong>Gianna Nannini <\/strong>that caught the attention of the <em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung <\/em>(June 14 &#8211; &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/feuilleton\/pop\/italienische-rocksnaengerin-gianna-nannini-wird-sechzig-14285262.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Die Frau ist ein Rocker<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Style \u2013 <\/strong>While the <em>New York Times<\/em> featured two pieces on the <strong>Pitti Uomo<\/strong> &nbsp;collections (June 10 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/16\/fashion\/mens-style\/pitti-uomo-mens-fashion-spring-2017.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At Pitti Uomo, a Few Shirts and a Sportswear Slant<\/a>*; June 15 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/16\/fashion\/mens-style\/karl-lagerfeld-fashion-photography.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karl Lagerfeld, a Renaissance Man Among Renaissance Masters<\/a>*), another US paper, the <em>Wall Street<\/em> <em>Journal,<\/em> was interested in &nbsp;the efforts being made by <strong>Alitalia<\/strong> &nbsp;to mark its re-launch, complete with a redesigned fleet and fashion-rated uniforms, (June 12 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/italian-airline-goes-on-charm-offensive-1465777071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Airline Goes on Charm Offensive<\/a>*). <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> wrote about the architect Rem Koolhass, who is swapping \u201cdelirious\u201d New York and his work with the Prada Foundation for \u201cbeautiful Italian design\u201d in <strong>Venice <\/strong>where he has taken on the restoration of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi (June 10 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2016\/06\/10\/estilo\/1465560169_698413.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Del delirio neoyorchino al \u2018bel design\u2019 italiano<\/a>).
