It seems that Inter<strong>,<\/strong> one of the country\u2019s sporting icons, is looking like an interesting prospect to Suning, the major Chinese retailing group that is also active in the consumer electronics sector. The story, all about the group buying a majority share in the team and the promise of additional funds to buy new players as well &#8211; has attracted the attention of most of the world\u2019s top newspapers:<em>Time <\/em>(June 6<em> <\/em>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4357948\/china-retail-giant-suning-italy-soccer-club-inter-milan-football\/?iid=sr-link5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy\u2019s Iconic Soccer Club Inter Milan Has Just Been Bought by a Chinese Retailer<\/a>), the <em>New York Times <\/em>(June 3 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2016\/06\/06\/business\/ap-soc-inter-milan-suning.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese Company Suning Buys Majority Stake in Inter Milan<\/a>*), two French papers such as <em>Les Echos<\/em> (June 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/sport\/football\/afp-00625269-foot-le-chinois-suning-rachete-linter-milan-2004079.php?x7mH2r0O88sURcke.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foot: l&#8217;Inter Milan passe sous pavillon chinois<\/a>) and <em>Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> (June 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/planete\/2016\/06\/06\/inter-et-ac-milan-vers-un-football-italien-en-ombres-chinoises_1457740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inter et AC Milan: vers un football italien en ombres chinoises<\/a>). The story also appeared in the German press: <em>Handelsblatt<\/em> (June 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.handelsblatt.com\/fussball-international-italien-chinesen-kaufen-mehrheit-bei-inter-mailand\/13692710.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italien: Chinesen kaufen Mehrheit bei Inter Mailand<\/a>)and <em>Sueddeutsche Zeitung<\/em> (June 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/sport\/italien-mailands-fussball-wird-chinesisch-1.3022715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mailands Fu\u00dfball wird chinesisc<\/a>) as well as in Spain\u2019s <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> (June 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/deportes.elpais.com\/deportes\/2016\/06\/06\/actualidad\/1465200422_637633.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Inter pasa a manos chinas<\/a> and <em>Expansi\u00f3n <\/em>(June 6<em> <\/em>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/directivos\/deporte-negocio\/2016\/06\/06\/57552c32e2704e5c028b4620.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La china Suning se hace con un 68,5% del Inter de Mil\u00e1n<\/a>.).<\/p>\n<p>Other foreign funds regard <strong>Grandi Stazioni<\/strong>, thanks to the successful bid of 900 million made by the group comprising Italy\u2019s Borletti and France\u2019s Antin Infrastructure Partners (<em>Reuters<\/em>, June 8<em> &#8211;<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/grandistazioni-ma-antin-borletti-idUSR1N17F01H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italo-French group to buy Grandi Stazioni Retail for $1 bln<\/a>) and Riso<strong> Scotti<\/strong>, that is set to benefit from Spain\u2019s Ebro Foods decision to increase its share in the company (<em>Expansi\u00f3n, <\/em>June 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/empresas\/distribucion\/2016\/06\/01\/574e7e58268e3e9a598b459a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebro Foods eleva su participaci\u00f3n en la italiana Riso Scotti al 40%<\/a>). The foreign press has also been reporting on how Italian businesses are strengthening their involvement in businesses abroad.&nbsp; Prime examples are <strong>Enel<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>which, has just inaugurated a new solar plant in Chile (<em>Bloomberg,<\/em> May 30 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-05-30\/italy-s-enel-starts-160-megawatt-solar-plant-in-chile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy\u2019s Enel Starts 160-Megawatt Solar Plant in Chile<\/a>) and <strong>Barilla<\/strong>, featured in <em>Les Echos<\/em>, that is currently considering expanding into Asia (May 30 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/journal20160530\/lec2_industrie_et_services\/021975402992-barilla-le-geant-des-pates-italiennes-a-lheure-des-choix-2002215.php?VTz0UYBhEoAQwiel.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barilla, le g\u00e9ant des p\u00e2tes italiennes \u00e0 l&#8217;heure des choix<\/a>*). The same French paper also reported on Nerio Alessandri and the growth of his company, <strong>Technogym <\/strong>which has recently gone public on the Milan Stock Exchange (May 27 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/week-end\/business-story\/innovation\/021964178994-lingeniere-du-fitness-2001781.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u2019\u00ab Ingegnere \u00bb du fitness<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Italian literature, theatre, opera and art have also featured in the international press this week. <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> was exploring the secrets of Naples as revealed in books by <strong>Maurizio de Giovanni <\/strong>(May 27 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-mysteries-of-naples-1464373831\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mysteries of Naples<\/a>*). It was <strong>Collodi<\/strong>, however, that featured in a piece in <em>The Guardian,<\/em> in which it explained the role played by the town in the collective mind of Italy and in particular, its culture (June 7 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/childrens-books-site\/2016\/jun\/07\/carlo-collodi-pinocchio-pipi-the-pink-monkey-alessandro-gallenzi-axel-scheffler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Imprinted in the soul of every Italian&#8217;: Carlo Collodi&#8217;s Pinocchio<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Post <\/em>published several Italy oriented articles: it<em> <\/em>reported on the passing of <strong>Giorgio Albertazzi <\/strong>(May 28<strong> <\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/theater_dance\/italian-theater-actor-and-director-giorgio-albertazzi-dies\/2016\/05\/28\/75d63416-24cb-11e6-b944-52f7b1793dae_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian theater actor, director Giorgio Albertazzi dies<\/a>) and then it switched its attention to the comeback after 11 years of a much-loved Italian conductor, opera and Milan, <strong>Riccardo Muti<\/strong> (June 5- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/muti-exhibit-at-la-scala-salves-old-wounds\/2016\/06\/05\/577b589e-2b23-11e6-b9d5-3c3063f8332c_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muti returns to La Scala stage for 1st time in 11 years<\/a>). It also described how the spirit of a very Italian festival was alive and well in the Mississippi Delta (May 27 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/40-year-mark-spoleto-festival-usa-opens-in-south-carolina\/2016\/05\/27\/ff99c4b6-23ee-11e6-b944-52f7b1793dae_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spoleto Festival USA begins 40th season in South Carolina<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em>, on the other hand, chose to run with a story about a recent Italian-American agreement that has nothing to do with business but rather with art and technology, involving the <strong>Uffizi <\/strong>in Florence and Indiana University (May 27 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/27\/arts\/design\/uffizi-with-indiana-university-will-digitize-ancient-sculptures.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uffizi, With Indiana University, Will Digitize Ancient Sculptures<\/a>*). <em>El Mundo<\/em> published an article about seventy-two unknown paintings by 17th century Italian artists currently being exhibited in Madrid\u2019s Royal Palace (June 8 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/la-aventura-de-la-historia\/2016\/06\/08\/5757f28ce5fdea897d8b457b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hallazgos italianos en las Colecciones Reales<\/a>) whilst in France l<em>e Matin, <\/em>reported on how contemporary art has brought Italy and Morocco together (June 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/lematin.ma\/journal\/2016\/l-italie-et-le-maroc-dans-un-projet--commun-d-art-contemporain\/248627.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u2019Italie et le Maroc dans un projet commun d\u2019art contemporain<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism <\/strong>\u2013 The opening of the installation created by artist Christo on <strong>Lake Iseo, <\/strong>expected<strong> <\/strong>to attract some half-a-million visitors, caught the eye of several foreign papers: The <em>Washington Post<\/em> (June 7 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/artist-christo-walks-on-water-with-floating-piers\/2016\/06\/07\/c71d758e-2cf8-11e6-b9d5-3c3063f8332c_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artist Christo walks on water with \u201cFloating Piers\u201d<\/a>), t<em>he Guardian<\/em> (June 8 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2016\/jun\/08\/walk-on-water-christo-floats-3km-path-across-italys-lake-iseo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walk on water: Christo floats 3km path across Italy&#8217;s Lake Iseo<\/a>) and <em>Les Echos<\/em> (June 9 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.lesechos.fr\/archives\/2016\/SerieLimitee\/00155-002-SLI.htm?texte=italie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christo emballe en Italie<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, it was another Lombardy town, Piuro in <strong>Valtellina<\/strong>, and the re-opening of the Palazzo Vertemate Franchi for the summer season that had interested the <em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em> (June 2 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/reise\/eine-messe-fuer-die-stadt-piuro-im-bergell-schmueckt-ein-renaissance-palast-ein-tal-voller-lebensfreude-14238291-p2.html?printPagedArticle=true#pageIndex_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eine Messe f\u00fcr die Stadt Piuro<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em> had written about <strong>Punta Ala<\/strong> (May 26 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/29\/travel\/punta-ala-tuscany-maremma.html?login=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In This Part of Tuscany, No Souvenirs Necessary<\/a>*) and it also featured a photographic piece on an old farm in the hills of <strong>Montalcino<\/strong> (May 27 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/27\/realestate\/bringing-out-the-beauty-of-a-once-derelict-mill-in-italy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bringing Out the Beauty of a Once-Derelict Mill in Italy*<\/a>). It was the corners of Rome tourists don\u2019t know about, however, that featured in an article in <em>Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> (June 3 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/voyages\/2016\/06\/03\/babas-a-rome_1457133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Babas \u00e0 Rome<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food<\/strong> \u2013 It was the food of Apulia, \u201cone of the most interesting regions of Italy\u201d&nbsp; that featured in a review, in Germany\u2019s <em>Sueddetsche Zeitung, <\/em>on Angelo Sabatelli\u2019s restaurant, the <strong>Masseria Spina<\/strong> (June 3 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/stil\/lokaltermin-angelo-sabatelli-1.3015834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;Angelo Sabatelli<\/a>). The <em>Financial Times <\/em>provided its readers with a few typically Roman recipes &nbsp;(June 3 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/203c2be8-2780-11e6-8b18-91555f2f4fde.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recipe: Gnocchi Romana, baked artichoke<\/a>*) whilst the <em>New York Times<\/em> learnt where to eat traditional Italian family-style food (June 4 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/05\/nyregion\/restaurants-where-the-italian-family-tradition-endures.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Restaurants Where the Italian Family Tradition Endures<\/a>*).In the end <em>Lib\u00e9ration<\/em> had chosen to feature <strong>Giovanni Passerini\u2019s<\/strong> new Paris restaurant (May 27 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/next.liberation.fr\/food\/2016\/05\/27\/passerini-la-renaissance-italienne_1455617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Passerini, la renaissance italienne<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>* Article available for pay \/ at registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Investments &amp; internationalization \u2013 <\/strong>It is not just the best of Italian industry that is attracting foreign investments.
