{"id":72404,"date":"2016-06-01T13:35:56","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T11:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/pin\/week-may-20-26\/"},"modified":"2016-06-01T13:35:56","modified_gmt":"2016-06-01T11:35:56","slug":"week-may-20-26","status":"publish","type":"pin","link":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/pin\/week-may-20-26\/","title":{"rendered":"The week of May 20 &#8211; 26"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Economy<\/strong> \u2013 As the rate that the world\u2019s economy slows down, even the luxury sector needs to become more innovative and the <em>Financial Times<\/em> focused its attention on Milan\u2019s \u201c<strong>fashion square<\/strong>\u201d, the high-class fashion district based around Via Montenapoleone as a way to set out the strategies now being adopted by that particular sector &nbsp;(May 22 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/0399444c-031f-11e6-99cb-83242733f755.html#axzz49ZjAGBnh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxury brands innovate to combat global slowdown<\/a>*). <em>The Business of Luxury<\/em> supplement featured an article dedicated to Brunello Cucinelli, telling the tale of this successful entrepreneur based in Solomeo, near Perugia, his philosophical belief that businesses should aim for sustainable growth and not to push ahead \u201cwhatever the cost\u201d( May 22 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/06ccc99a-031f-11e6-99cb-83242733f755.html#axzz49ZjAGBnh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brunello Cucinelli, philosopher and cashmere capitalist<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><em>Bloomberg <\/em>also wrote about strategies for growth in its profile piece about <strong>Monica Mondardini<\/strong>, CEO of the Espresso Editorial Group (May 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-05-24\/top-female-ceo-in-italy-targets-expansion-of-de-benedetti-empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy Top Female CEO Targets Growth of De Benedetti Empire<\/a>). Meanwhile, Spain\u2019s <em>Expansi\u00f3n<\/em> wrote about leading passenger transport shipping company, the Grimaldi Group, and the six million investment it is making to expand its Barcelona terminal (May 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/catalunya\/2016\/05\/20\/573e1489e2704ecc378b4653.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grimaldi invertir\u00e1 seis millones para ampliar su terminal en Barcelona<\/a>). &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 The top cultural story this week has to be the news about the <strong>Traviata<\/strong> at the Opera di Roma, directed by Sofia Coppola with input from the fashion designer, Valentino (<em>New York Times, <\/em>May 19 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/19\/fashion\/valentino-sofia-coppola-la-traviata.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valentino and Sofia Coppola Make an Opera<\/a>*; <em>Washington Post,<\/em> May 20 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/newssearch\/?query=italy&amp;contenttype=&amp;searchType=&amp;blogName=&amp;datefilter=7+Days&amp;sort=Date#page-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sofia Coppola tries her hand at opera in Rome<\/a>; <em>Reuters<\/em>, May 23- <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-italy-art-opera-idUSKCN0YE1P0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rome<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-italy-art-opera-idUSKCN0YE1P0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> opera house taps Hollywood glitz for new &#8216;Traviata<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">&#8216;<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em> also carried a couple of articles on the performing arts, one about this year\u2019s <strong>Spoleto Festival USA<\/strong>, based in Charleston that has managed to duplicate the atmosphere that surrounds its namesake and the Festival dei Due Mondi (May 21 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2016\/05\/21\/arts\/ap-us-spoleto-festival-usa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spoleto&#8217;s 40th: &#8216;Porgy and Bess&#8217; and Remembering Emanuel AME<\/a>*) and the other about the <strong>Italian Dance Connection<\/strong> in New York (May 19 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/22\/arts\/dance\/italian-dance-tradition-and-immigration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Dance: Tradition and Immigration<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><em>Reuters<\/em> was in Italy to visit <strong>Gianni Berengo Gardin\u2019s<\/strong> retrospective, currently showing in Rome\u2019s Palazzo delle Esposizioni (May 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-italy-photographer-idUSKCN0YE1UT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Famed Italian photographer Berengo Gardin looks back on his changing world<\/a>) and <em>el Pa\u00eds<\/em> was in Venice to report on the <strong>Architecture Biennale<\/strong> and its focus this year on portraying a more political and social outlook (May 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/cultura.elpais.com\/cultura\/2016\/05\/24\/actualidad\/1464078445_796364.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia pone los pies en la tierra<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> \u2013 Amongst the many stories about this sector, <em>el Mundo<\/em> concentrated on providing Real and Atletico Madrid supporters all the advice they would need if they were heading for <strong>Milan <\/strong>and the <strong>Champions League<\/strong> final in that is effectively also a Madrid derby (May 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/deportes\/2016\/05\/23\/5742ffceca4741d37b8b4651.html\">http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/deportes\/2016\/05\/23\/5742ffceca4741d37b8b4651.html<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">.<\/span> <em>The<\/em> <em>New York Times, <\/em>on the other hand, was in <strong>Venice<\/strong> to review the JW Marriot resort on the Isola della Rose (May 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/22\/travel\/jw-marriott-venice-resort-spa-venice-hotel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">On a Lush Island, the Splendor of Venice but Not the Crowds<\/a>*), whilst <em>Expansi\u00f3n <\/em>was in Brescia to report on the start of the \u201cDolce Vita\u2019s\u201d very own race, the <strong>Mille Miglia <\/strong>(May 24 <strong>&#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/fueradeserie\/motor\/2016\/05\/23\/57430e75e5fdea28768b4696.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">En la carrera de la Dolce Vita<\/a>). Meantime <em>le Monde<\/em> had been in <strong>Cremona<\/strong> to seek out \u201cthe soul of the violin\u201d amongst the city\u2019s string instrument makers (May 18 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/musiques\/portfolio\/2016\/05\/18\/l-ame-du-violon-se-trouve-a-cremone_4921255_1654986.html?xtmc=cremone&amp;xtcr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u2019\u00e2me du violon se trouve \u00e0 Cr\u00e9mone<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Florence <\/strong>also got a mention this week in an article that appeared in the <em>New York Times<\/em> that explained the investments being made in the city\u2019s cultural heritage by the luxury goods sector, with new venues dedicated to the partnership between art and fashion (May 19 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2016\/05\/19\/arts\/ap-eu-italy-art-meets-fashion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florence Exhibits Examine the Art-Fashion Dynamic<\/a>*). It was the nation\u2019s capital that featured in <em>el Pa\u00eds<\/em> in a piece about the <strong>Pigneto<\/strong>, Rome\u2019s new fashion district (May 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elviajero.elpais.com\/elviajero\/2016\/05\/17\/album\/1463499219_637590.html#1463499219_637590_1463520067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/elviajero.elpais.com\/elviajero\/2016\/05\/17\/album\/1463499219_637590.html#1463499219_637590_1463520067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> barrio de moda en Roma<\/a>) and <em>The Guardian<\/em> was also in Lazio, scoping out the <strong>Pontine Islands<\/strong>, \u201cpearls\u201d of the Mediterranean, known since ancient Roman times as being ideal destinations to rest up and unwind (May 23 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2016\/may\/23\/italy-pontine-islands-ponza-ventotene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8211; <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2016\/may\/23\/italy-pontine-islands-ponza-ventotene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roman roaming: a tour of Italy\u2019s Pontine Islands<\/a>). The same British paper was further south, in Sicily, showcasing photographs of <strong>Mount Etna\u2019s<\/strong> latest eruption (May 24 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/jonathanjonesblog\/2016\/may\/24\/volcanoes-turi-caggegi-etna-video-joseph-wright-vesuvius-paintings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Explosions in the sky: why Mount Etna erupting is as pretty as a painting<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food<\/strong> \u2013 This always popular topic never fails to appear, and the <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>wrote about a fun event staged in <strong>Naples<\/strong> (May 19 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/video\/italian-chefs-break-world-record-for-longest-pizza\/7C4CFA00-ED74-4B9E-9ACB-FF080230D888.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Chefs Break World Record for Longest Pizza<\/a>*), whilst <em>the Guardian <\/em>printed a variation on another traditional Italian dish (May 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2016\/may\/24\/pasta-al-forno-baked-pasta-recipe-rachel-roddy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rachel Roddy\u2019s baked pasta recipe<\/a>).
