{"id":72391,"date":"2016-04-20T15:18:47","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T13:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/pin\/week-april-8-14\/"},"modified":"2016-04-20T15:18:47","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T13:18:47","slug":"week-april-8-14","status":"publish","type":"pin","link":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/pin\/week-april-8-14\/","title":{"rendered":"The week of April 8 \u2013 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Italian design across the world: the Furniture Fair in Milan <\/strong>has been in the spot light of the international press this week.&nbsp; <em>Les Echos <\/em>wrote about the sector, announcing that the bad times were over and that there had been a 6% increase in exports in 2015 (April 12 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/industrie-services\/conso-distribution\/021836729975-le-meuble-italien-tire-un-trait-sur-les-annees-de-crise-1213350.phpLe%20meuble%20italien%20tire%20un%20trait%20sur%20les%20ann\u00e9es%20de%20crise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le meuble italien tire un trait sur les ann\u00e9es de crise*<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">)<\/span>.Undoubtedly it is the sector\u2019s major brands that are leading the way and in an article the <em>Financial Times<\/em> singled out <strong>Kartell<\/strong>, highlighting the company\u2019s expansion in Africa, America and Asia and the fact that these days, with shops in 140 countries, some 75% of the group\u2019s sales come from exports (April 11 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/b4f6a5b8-ff0f-11e5-99cb-83242733f755,Authorised=false.html?siteedition=intl&amp;_i_location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcms%2Fs%2F0%2Fb4f6a5b8-ff0f-11e5-99cb-83242733f755.html%3Fsiteedition%3Dintl&amp;_i_referer=&amp;classification=conditional_standard&amp;iab=barrier-app#axzz45b72eN9F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kartell steps up expansion drive with new stores and products<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>Another piece in the <em>Financial Times<\/em> earlier in the week, was also design oriented, but featuring spectacles, not furniture, providing an overview of a sector in which Italian brands still lead the way despite increased competition from elsewhere (April 8 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/6245b900-fbde-11e5-8f41-df5bda8beb40,Authorised=false.html?siteedition=intl&amp;_i_location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcms%2Fs%2F0%2F6245b900-fbde-11e5-8f41-df5bda8beb40.html%3Fsiteedition%3Dintl&amp;_i_referer=&amp;classification=conditional_standard&amp;iab=barrier-app#axzz45b72eN9F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxury eyewear in the spotlight as brands focus in on sector<\/a>. <em>Bloomberg <\/em>also ran an article that was all about style and luxury, featuring <strong>Benetti<\/strong>\u2019s latest &#8211; super expensive &#8211; super yacht (April 8 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-04-08\/benetti-fisker-50-yacht-photos-specs-price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See the $37 Million Benetti Superyacht Designed by Henrik Fisker<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investments and export<\/strong> \u2013 Design was not the only sector to attract the attention of the world\u2019s press as it also found something to say about Italy\u2019s international commercial relationships and how some sectors are going from strength to strength. Following Matteo Renzi\u2019s visit to the Iranian capital, the <em>New York Times<\/em> wrote about the latest agreements between Rome and Tehran (April 12 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2016\/04\/12\/world\/middleeast\/ap-ml-iran-italy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran and Italy Sign Several Deals During Visit by PM Renzi<\/a>*, and in a follow up piece, it focused in particular on Italian fashion \u2013 the first to establish a strong foothold in the country (April 13 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/2016\/04\/13\/business\/13reuters-iran-italy-fashion.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy&#8217;s Fashion Industry Signs Deal to Build Ties With Iran<\/a>). The same paper also wrote about the opportunities available to Italian wine producers thanks to inroads made through e-commerce with China (April 11 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/2016\/04\/11\/business\/11reuters-italy-china-wine.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy Aims to Boost Wine Sales on Alibaba Network Ten-Fold<\/a>*). Les<em> Echos<\/em> chose instead to write about the new investments Sweden\u2019s Ikea has decided to make in Italy, with plans to open smaller than usual shops in the centre of various cities (April 12- <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/journal20160412\/lec2_industrie_et_services\/021832125513-ikea-va-tester-des-petits-magasins-de-ville-en-italie-1213150.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ikea va tester des \u00ab petits \u00bb magasins de ville en Italie<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture <\/strong>\u2013 This week the cultural pages of the <em>New York Times<\/em> featured a piece about the success of the <strong>Children\u2019s Book Fair<\/strong> in Bologna (April 8- <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/08\/books\/review\/continued-growth-at-the-bologna-childrens-book-fair.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Continued Growth at the Bologna Children\u2019s Book Fair<\/a>, but France\u2019s <em>Le Monde<\/em> was more interested in <strong>Naples<\/strong> with an interview to one of its nationals, Sylvain Bellenger, the current director of the city\u2019s <strong>Capodimonte<\/strong> museum (April 13 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/arts\/article\/2016\/04\/13\/heureux-comme-un-francais-a-naples_4901101_1655012.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heureux comme un Fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 Naples<\/a>) and publishing a review of the latest film to be set in the Parthenopean city (April 12 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/cinema\/article\/2016\/04\/12\/par-amour-melo-et-chromos-sur-la-baie-de-naples_4900466_3476.html#AURlSJG2LviZGygt.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00ab Par amour \u00bb: m\u00e9lo et chromos sur la baie de Naples<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Sueddeutsche Zeitung<\/em>, on the other hand, wrote about <strong>Massimo Carlotto, <\/strong>known for his hardboiled novels (April 11 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/kultur\/italiens-verbrechen-unentdeckte-suenden-1.2934758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unentdeckte S\u00fcnden<\/a>) and then, just two days later, it turned the spotlight onto another Italian, Cremona born artist <strong>Giorgio Pastorelli<\/strong> and the exhibition of his works in Icking, Germany (April 13 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/muenchen\/wolfratshausen\/kulturtipp-italienische-impressionen-1.2947338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italienische Impressionen<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food and Wine <\/strong>\u2013 This week, the New York Times ran two pieces on this topic.
