One article, published in the <em>Financial Times, <\/em>described the increase in foreign investments in Italy in 2015 highlighting the record number of cross-border mergers and acquisitions worth some 50 billion dollars, also pointing out that Italian businesses were second only to their British counterparts when it came to acquisitions (March 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ft.com\/ftdata\/2016\/03\/23\/record-high-merger-and-acquisition-deals-in-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Record high merger and acquisition deals in Italy<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>Foreign groups are not the only businesses currently in investment mode however, and international press agencies also wrote about a<strong> <\/strong>broad band project interesting several Italian companies, with the 900 million Euro investment <strong>Metroweb <\/strong>is making in it that will extend Italy\u2019s optic fiber network (<em>Reuters, <\/em>March 18 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/metroweb-ftth-idUSI6N16M00R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy&#8217;s Metroweb to invest 900 mln euros to bring fibre network to 10 cities<\/a>) and <strong>Enel\u2019s <\/strong>intention to invest in this very project (<em>Bloomberg<\/em>, March 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-03-23\/enel-to-invest-2-5-billion-in-building-fiber-network-in-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enel to Invest $2.5 Billion in Building Fiber Network in Italy<\/a>). Meantime, the previous day, the <em>Financial Times<\/em> had already described how Italy\u2019s largest utility company had increased its dividends (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/fastft\/2016\/03\/22\/italys-enel-raises-dividend-on-profit-surge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy\u2019s Enel raises dividend on profit surge<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ferragamo<\/strong> is also doing well with its increasing profits up to 11% (<em>Reuters,<\/em> March 17 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/salvatore-ferragamo-results-idUSI6N16M001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferragamo posts larger-than-expected 11 pct rise in core profit<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>Other news about Italian businesses dealt with the latest stock Exchange listing as that of the home-linen company, <strong>Mirabello Carrara <\/strong>(<em>Reuters<\/em>, March 22 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSL5N16U0PZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mirabello Carrara shareholders approve listing on AIM Italia<\/a>). Mergers in the banking sector were also covered, with the world\u2019s leading financial papers writing about the union between <strong>BPM<\/strong> and <strong>Banco Popolare, <\/strong>(<em>Reuters<\/em>, March 18 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-italy-banks-m-a-idUSKCN0WK0PW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy&#8217;s BPM and Popolare to decide next week on merger plan<\/a>; the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, March 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/banco-popolare-banca-popolare-di-milano-agree-to-merge-1458769795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Banco Popolare, Banca Popolare di Milano Agree to Merge<\/a>*; and the <em>Financial Times<\/em>, March 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/2cabba68-f19f-11e5-aff5-19b4e253664a.html#axzz43oz71zMb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Banca Popolare di Milano and Banco Popolare agree merger deal<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Italian culture attracted several mentions this week, particularly of a literary nature. The <em>Financial Times<\/em> wrote about <strong>Elena Ferrante<\/strong>, the Italian author whose hidden identity increases her reader\u2019s interest in her work (March 18 &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/next.ft.com\/content\/26e2b2c0-ec32-11e5-bb79-2303682345c8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Elena Ferrante, a fake name behind a brilliant tale<\/a>*), while <em>El Mundo<\/em> published an article that celebrated <strong>Natalia Ginzburg<\/strong>\u2019s centenary birth, \u201cthe goddess of little things\u201d, (March 22 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/cultura\/2016\/03\/22\/56f03409268e3ede088b465a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natalia Ginzburg, diosa de las peque\u00f1as cosas<\/a>), whilst on the following day, the <em>Frankfuerter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em>, wrote about another Italian icon author, <strong>Umberto Eco, <\/strong>whose last will and testament, in keeping with the man\u2019s nature. \u201cforbids\u201d any formal conferences or conventions on his work for at least ten years after his death, (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/gesellschaft\/menschen\/umberto-ecos-letzter-wunsch-bloss-keine-konferenzen-14141849.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blo\u00df keine Konferenzen!<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Art was not forgotten this week, with the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> writing, about the \u201cambitious\u201d exhibition in Forl\u00ec showing the work of legendary artist, <strong>Piero della Francesca <\/strong>(March 21 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/piero-della-francesca-exploring-a-legend-review-1458594885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Piero della Francesca: Exploring a Legend\u2019 Review<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> &#8211; Of note this week, was a piece in <em>Les Echos<\/em> suggesting a relaxing stay on Venice\u2019s \u201cIsland of Roses\u201d (March 18 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/week-end\/voyages\/voyages\/021771577111-le-repaire-la-tentation-de-venise-1208121.php?pXs7YbM84G0Pzahz.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le repaire : la tentation de Venise<\/a>) and another, in <em>El Mundo<\/em> advising on which wines to choose to make the most of a holiday in Rome (March 22 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/comunidad-valenciana\/2016\/03\/22\/56efbc97e2704e4b3f8b45f4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los vinos de Roma<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Article available for pay\/ at registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Economy<\/strong> &#8211;
