Italian companies of interest to foreign investors or that are looking to foreign markets to increase turnover, are nonetheless very busy and are also featuring in newspapers around the globe. On February 4, <em>Bloomberg<\/em> wrote about Qatar Airways\u2019 interest in <strong>Meridiana<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-02-04\/qatar-airways-in-talks-over-transaction-with-italy-s-meridiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Qatar Airways in Talks Over Transaction With Italy&#8217;s Meridiana<\/a>, whilst on February 7, Spain\u2019s <em>Expansion <\/em>explained how it is that these days, Italy and Portugal are the two European markets attracting the lion\u2019s share of Chinese capital funding &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expansion.com\/economia\/2016\/02\/07\/56b710cae2704e72038b456d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portugal e Italia se alzan como los destinos preferidos de la inversi\u00f3n china en Europa<\/a> and just 2 days later, <em>Reuters<\/em> reported on the agreement, worth 5 billion Euros, signed by <strong>Ferrovie dello Stato <\/strong>(State Railways)<strong> <\/strong>in Iran &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/italy-iran-railway-idUSL8N15O3XC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy&#8217;s state train company to help Iran develop rail system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other business success stories were also reported by the world\u2019s press, with the fashion sector attracting the greatest interest. On February 8, <em>Reuters<\/em> ran a piece on <strong>Yoox<\/strong>, the online luxury retailer that has recently merged with the French, Net-A-Porter, and has done much better than analysts anticipated &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/yoox-net-a-porter-results-sales-idUSI6N15C01H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You NAP beats forecast with 2015 pro-forma sales of 1.7 bln euros<\/a>. On February 10, <em>El Pais<\/em> explained how <strong>Luxottica<\/strong> has managed to dominate some 80% of the sector on a global basis &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2016\/02\/09\/estilo\/1455038861_497176.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El negocio redondo de las gafas de sol de lujo est\u00e1 en Italia<\/a>, It was luxury of a different kind however, that featured in <em>Les Echos<\/em> on February 5, in an article about the launch of <strong>Ducati,<\/strong> explained how it was ready to make new records, both on the track and in terms of sales &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/week-end\/business-story\/enquetes\/021668922311-ducati-le-grand-retour-des-bolides-1198007.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ducati: le grand retour des bolides<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 Several articles of a cultural nature were published this week, with the success of books written by <strong>Elena Ferrante <\/strong>leading the way<strong>.<\/strong> Two pieces appeared on February 9, in the <em>New York Times<\/em> and <em>Time <\/em>respectively, announcing that stories written by probably the most mysterious in Italian authors are to be turned into a TV series &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/10\/arts\/television\/elena-ferrante-novels-destined-for-television-series.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elena Ferrante Novels Destined for Television Series<\/a>* and <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4214582\/elena-ferrantes-neapolitan-novels-tv-adaptation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elena Ferrante\u2019s Neapolitan Novels Are Headed to Television<\/a>. Another Italian writer, <strong>Melania Mazzucco<\/strong>, featured in <em>El Mundo<\/em>, on February 8, with a review of her book \u201cYou are what you are\u201d &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/cataluna\/2016\/02\/08\/56b8f5f4268e3e3a7b8b4604.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La soledad del hombre madre<\/a>. The previous day, the <em>Sunday Times<\/em> featured the American-Bengalese writer, <strong>Jhumpa Lahiri,<\/strong> whose latest book has only just hit the shelves of the world\u2019s bookstores, in an article in which she explained why she had shunned English and moved to Rome in order to write in Italian &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesundaytimes.co.uk\/sto\/newsreview\/features\/article1665051.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arrivederci, English. I\u2019m in Rome to write as the Romans do<\/a>*<strong>. <\/strong>Next, on February 7, the <em>Financial Times<\/em> dedicated space to the London stage of \u201cLeonardo Da Vinci: the Mechanics of Genius\u201d world tour. The exhibition, first mounted in Paris thanks to the collaboration between Milan\u2019s Museum of Science and Technology and its counterpart in Paris, features 3D models based on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century designs of the Tuscan built in Milan in 1952 to mark the 500<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Leonardo\u2019s birth &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/next.ft.com\/content\/859d89a0-ce52-11e5-92a1-c5e23ef99c77\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Da Vinci\u2019s imagination and a playground of invention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> \u2013 articles of interest to visitors to Italy also featured this week \u2013 just as they always do and two featured in the <em>New York Times<\/em>. The first, on February 4, focused on the wines of the Valtellina district and their increasing popularity in the US &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/10\/dining\/wine-review-valtellina.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valtellinas Are No Longer Hiding in the Hills<\/a>* whilst the second, on February 9, was full of suggestions as to the best way to visit Italy on two wheels &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/14\/travel\/vespa-italy-holidays-tours.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Touring Italy by Vespa<\/a>. Meantime, on February 7 <em>El Pais<\/em> wrote about the arrival of some Bolivian Oruro \u201cbubbly\u201d at the <strong>Venice<\/strong> <strong>Carnival &#8211;<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/cultura.elpais.com\/cultura\/2016\/02\/07\/actualidad\/1454873470_758980.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El carnaval boliviano de Oruro brilla en Venecia<\/a> whilst on February 9, <em>El Mundo <\/em>turned its attention to <strong>Verona<\/strong>, \u201cthe mecca\u201d for those in love and the &#8216;Verona in Love&#8217; festival &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocholeguas.com\/2016\/02\/09\/europa\/1455015235.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verona, meca de los enamorados<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Article available for pay\/with registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Economy<\/strong> \u2013 The most recent storm to assail stock markets across the world (including the Milan Stock Exchange), has filled the economic and financial pages of the international press this week.
