Industrial upswing<\/strong> \u2013 The foreign press has been busy pointing out the positive signals emanating from Italy\u2019s industrial sector. On January 6, there was a \u201cwell done\u201d from the Financial Times <\/em>in a piece that highlighted the growth in the country\u2019s manufacturing index that ended 2015 on a high note – Italian service sector ends 2015 on a high<\/a>* having previously reported, on December 23, on the sector\u2019s positive end of year figures regarding turnover and new orders received in October – Italian industry enjoys strong October<\/a>*.<\/p>\n

Large groups received individual mentions. The news published by Les Echos<\/em> on January 12 about Enel, <\/strong>for example, was about the merger with its own renewable subsidiary company – L’italien Enel va absorber sa filiale dans les \u00e9nergies vertes<\/a>, the same subsidiary to feature in articles in Bloomberg<\/em> covering its various investments in Latin America, on December 22 – Enel Green Power to Invest $215 Million in a Wind Farm in Chile<\/a> and again on December 28- Enel Green Power Building 254-Megawatt Solar Farm in Brazil<\/a>. Enel\u2019s renewables also featured, on January 13, in Germany\u2019s Die Welt<\/em> that had travelled to Tuscany to find out about its geothermal power stations – Der kl\u00fcgste \u00d6kostrom entsteht durch W\u00e4rme aus der Erde<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On December 22, Reuters f<\/em>eatured the automotive sector in a piece about a British group specializing in car parts happy to pay 1 billion Euros for Rhiag<\/strong> – LKQ to buy Italy’s Rhiag to boost Europe auto spares business<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With Italy\u2019s financial market registering \u201cthe best performance in Europe in 2015\u201d, making its<\/strong> Stock Market the most vibrant in the Eurozone<\/strong>, on January 6, the Financial Times<\/em> reported – Robust euro zone IPOs in the pipeline<\/a>* and despite the somewhat turbulent situation at the beginning of the year, there are new listings on the horizon. First off the blocks in 2016 was Ferrari,<\/strong> on the Milan Stock Exchange, as reported on January 4 in the Washington Post<\/em> – Ferrari completes spinoff with stock listing in Milan<\/a> and in L’Orient le Jour<\/em> – Ferrari fait son entr\u00e9e \u00e0 la bourse de Milan, deux mois et demi apr\u00e8s Wall Street<\/a>. Next up, according to both the Financial Times <\/em>and Reuters<\/em> in articles published on January 10 and 11 respectively, are two groups in the property sector, Colima and Idea – Italian Reits look to test investors\u2019 property appetite with IPOs<\/a>* and – Italian real estate groups looking for right IPO moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reuters, on January 6, and Les Echos on January 7, have also run pieces highlighting the fact that foreign companies now hold half of Italy\u2019s stock market, a sign, they say, that the third largest economy in the Eurozone can indeed attract investments from abroad – Half of Italy’s stock market now in foreign hands \u2013 study and – Les \u00e9trangers d\u00e9tiennent plus de 50 % des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s cot\u00e9es italiennes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fashion<\/strong> \u2013 Reports in the foreign media on this sector confirm that it continues to be a mainstay of the Italian economy. On the eve of Pitti Uomo<\/strong>, Les Echos<\/em>, on January 12, explained how the industry has managed to compensate for the down turn in the Russian market by increasing sales in the US – La mode masculine italienne port\u00e9e par les Etats-Unis<\/a>. Other news on the sector had already appeared in December, with the Spanish daily, El Pais<\/em>, focusing, in a piece on the 19th<\/sup>, on the technological and design aspects of footwear produced by Stonefly<\/strong> – Zapatos italianos y tecnol\u00f3gicos<\/a>, whilst another, on the 26th<\/sup>, featured an interview with Enrico Bracalente, head of NeroGiardini<\/strong>, leading component of the \u201cmade in Italy\u201d brand – El imperio NeroGiardini<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Financial aspects of the sector also made the news, with Reuters reporting on December 23 on the announcement of a joint-venture in the cosmetics field – Italy’s Intercos seals cosmetics JV with S.Korea’s Shinsegae<\/a> and on January 11, on a successful 2015 for Italian fashion designer Brunello Cucinelli<\/strong> – Brunello Cucinelli 2015 revenues up 16 pct, boosted by forex<\/a><\/p>\n

Italy\u2019s Leading Figures <\/strong>featured in several articles printed during the period in question. On December 18, the Financial Times<\/em> published a long interview with Lorenzo Bini Smaghi <\/strong>carried out in his home in Tuscany, in which the president of Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, explained his ideas on how best to manage Italy\u2019s cultural heritage – Economist Lorenzo Bini Smaghi on managing Italy\u2019s legacy<\/a>. On January 4, the New York Times<\/em> directed its attention to the nomination of Filippo<\/strong> Grandi<\/strong> as head of the UNHCR – Filippo Grandi of Italy Takes Helm at UN Refugee Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Exponents of Italy\u2019s cultural scene also featured, with The Times, <\/em>on January 8, talking about the soprano, Rosa Feola<\/strong> – Rosa Feola: Musica e Poesia<\/a> whilst in Le Monde<\/em>, on January 6, the focus  was on writer Giancarlo De Cataldo<\/strong> – Giancarlo De Cataldo, juge \u00e0 part<\/a> and two days later, in the same paper, <\/strong>it was the turn of Marco Nassivera<\/strong>, New Chief for the Franco-German TV network, Art\u00e8 – Marco Nassivera, une fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 europ\u00e9enne<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On January 14, the book supplement of the same French daily featured the \u201cmysterious\u201d Italian writer, Elena Ferrante<\/strong> – Elena Ferrante, obstin\u00e9ment sous le masque<\/a> whilst it was on December 30, that Babelia, the culture supplement of Spain\u2019s El Pai<\/em>s, ran its interview with pianist Stefano Bollani –<\/strong> Stefano Bollani: \u201cAl jazz le falta conectar con la electr\u00f3nica\u201d<\/a>, and in another article, on January 9, marked the passing of actress Silvana Pampanini<\/strong>, star of popular Italian cinema- Muere Silvana Pampanini, diva del cine popular italiano<\/a>. She also featured in a profile published by Germany\u2019s Sueddeutsche Zeitung<\/em> on January 6 – Filmdiva Silvana Pampanini gestorben<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The death of the first ever woman to compete on the Formula 1 circuit, Maria Teresa de Filippis,<\/strong> nicknamed \u201cla Pilotina\u201d, also prompted a string of articles in the foreign press. On January 9, L\u2019Orient le Jour <\/em>spoke of the D\u00e9c\u00e8s de Maria de Filippis, premi\u00e8re femme pilote de F1<\/a>, The Times<\/em>, on January 10 wrote – Maria Teresa De Filippis – a pioneer for women in Formula One<\/a> and on 12th, the title in Le Monde<\/em> read – Mort de Maria Teresa de Filipis, la \u00ab Pilotina \u00bb, pionni\u00e8re de la F1<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Food & Wine <\/strong>never fails to put in an appearance, and this time around, on December 18, the Financial Times<\/em> explained that the country known for its wines could also boast about its craft beers<\/strong> – Five of the best: Italian craft beers<\/a>), but it was Italy\u2019s classic Christmas cake, panettone<\/strong>, and how it is titillating taste buds across Europe that was celebrated in Le Monde <\/em>on December 23 – Le panettone, brioche de No\u00ebl sans fronti\u00e8res<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg<\/em>, on the other hand, chose to publish an article on January 5 detailing what Francesco Mazzei<\/strong>, one of London\u2019s celebrated Italian chefs, has to say about the best of southern Italian cuisine – How to Cook the Best Food Southern Italy Has to Offer<\/a>,whilst it was the \u201cfuturistic cocktails\u201d sampled in Milan that featured in the New York Times<\/em> on January 6 – In Milan, a New Spin on a Century-Old Cocktail<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tourism, <\/strong>another perennial favorite of the international press was the focus of various articles, including one in The Times<\/em> on January 10 with plenty of suggestions as to where people might like to vacation in \u201cil bel paese\u201d – The 50 best holidays in Italy<\/a>, although on December 31, BloombergBusiness <\/em>had already recommended that visitors should head for Lake Iseo<\/strong>, where the artist Christo has a project planned for this spring – Christo’s Latest Big Project: Floating Piers in Italy<\/a>. A few days later, on January 4, the same paper published a photo gallery of a foundry in Agnone, in Molise, the Fonderia Marinelli, <\/strong>which has been casting bells since the 14th<\/sup> century –  The Marinelli Bell Foundry<\/a>). It was New Year\u2019s Eve however, when Milan was the focus of Spain\u2019s El Pais, <\/em>and specifically, on one of the city\u2019s newest symbols, the so-called Pirellone<\/strong>, the \u201caudacious\u201d skyscraper designed by Gio Ponti – El Pirellone, un s\u00edmbolo de Mil\u00e1n<\/a>. <\/p>\n
