Both the <em>Washington Post<\/em> and <em>Reuters<\/em> ran pieces about the heightened security opera-goers faced at the opera premier in Milan, amidst fears it might have been cancelled. On December 4 the former had this to say &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/theater_dance\/la-scala-opens-new-season-amid-enhanced-security\/2015\/12\/04\/ec9ddf60-9a95-11e5-aca6-1ae3be6f06d2_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Scala opens new season amid enhanced security<\/a> whilst the latter, on December 7 went with &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-italy-lascala-idUSKBN0TQ2P820151207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giovanna d&#8217;Arco opens La Scala season under high security<\/a>. The same event was big news in Spain too where the opera was streamed live to 24 movie theatres around the country, as reported on December 4, by <em>El Mundo<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/cultura\/2015\/12\/04\/5661d62ce2704ef62c8b45de.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Juana de Arco&#8217;, de La Scala a los cines<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There was even more Italian opera to read about this week, with Cavalleria Rusticana directed by <strong>Damiano Michieletto<\/strong> at Covent Garden in London. On December 7 both the <em>Financial Times<\/em> and <em>The Times<\/em> were there to report, the first saying &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/07391958-9a77-11e5-9228-87e603d47bdc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, Royal Opera House, London \u2014 \u2018Gripping<\/a>*, whilst a similar title in the second read \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/tto\/arts\/stage\/theatre\/article4632515.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cavalleria Rusticana\/Pagliacci at Covent Garden<\/a>*.<\/p>\n<p>Across the pond, the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> chose to feature the visual arts and the unconventional work of <strong>Alberto Burri,<\/strong>&nbsp; in a piece that ran on December 9 entitled &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/alberto-burri-the-trauma-of-painting-review-1449698460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting\u2019 Review<\/a>.&nbsp; A day later, Spain\u2019s El<em> Pais <\/em>reported on the Italian Film Festival in Barcelona &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/ccaa.elpais.com\/ccaa\/2015\/12\/09\/catalunya\/1449694317_998968.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La nueva hornada del cine italiano<\/a>. On December 7, across the border in France, it was an Italian neuroscientist, <strong>Pier Vincenzo Piazza, <\/strong>the recent recipient of two awards in that country who featured in <em>Le Monde&nbsp; <\/em>in a profile piece about the man and his work &#8211; <a href=\"#7LlBFQzjGtgbY6JJ.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pier Vincenzo Piazza, accro <\/a><a href=\"#7LlBFQzjGtgbY6JJ.99\">\u00e0 l&#8217;addiction<\/a>*.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fashion<\/strong> \u2013 Several international papers published articles involving the world of Italian fashion this week. On December 7, both <em>Reuters<\/em> and <em>El Pais<\/em>&nbsp; wrote about the death of Mariuccia Mandelli, the founder of <strong>Krizia<\/strong>, acknowledging that she had been one of the leading lights and most ambitious designers in the world of Italian fashion, with Reuters writing &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/people-mandelli-krizia-idUSL8N13W39R20151207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mariuccia Mandelli, founder of Krizia fashion brand, dies at 90<\/a> and <em>El Pais<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2015\/12\/07\/estilo\/1449502093_018238.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria Mandelli, la dise\u00f1adora que visti\u00f3 a la nueva mujer italiana<\/a>). A few days earlier, on December 4 the <em>El Pais Semanal<\/em> (weekly paper) ran a long piece on another Italian fashion label, <strong>Trussardi<\/strong>, a family that has been able to revitalize itself and contribute to the reinvention of the \u201cmade in Italy\u201d brand too &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2015\/12\/03\/eps\/1449167903_678621.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reinventar el \u2018Made in Italy\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finance<\/strong> \u2013 News of foreign investors in Italy also made it into the international press. <em>Reuter<\/em>s in fact ran two pieces, writing on December 5 about Consob (the Italian Securities and Exchange Commission) giving the go ahead to one particular tender &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ansaldo-hitachi-idUSL8N13U0JK20151205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy bourse watchdog approves Hitachi tender offer for Ansaldo -Hitachi<\/a> whilst the piece on December 7 was all about an American private equity company buying out Italian software company, <strong>Team System<\/strong> or 1.2 million Euros &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-teamsystem-m-a-hellman-friedman-idUSKBN0TQ1SH20151207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hellman &amp; Friedman to take control of Italy&#8217;s Team System<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Food &amp; Wine &#8211; <\/strong>On December 4 L<em>es Echos,<\/em> explained that Italian food and wine is experiencing a truly triumphant period at the moment, thanks in part to the success of groups like <strong>Eataly<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"#AVA7iXCp263qF19y.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L&#8217;italie, le bon filon du go\u00fbt italien<\/a>*. Italian recipes are often a popular feature in the foreign press, and on December 7, the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> described how chef <strong>Massimo Bottura <\/strong>makes a very particular sort of pasta &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/massimo-botturas-recipe-for-passatelli-1449505639\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Massimo Bottura\u2019s Recipe for Passatelli<\/a>* . A day later, L\u2019Orient le Jour published a wine review all about \u201cbubbles\u201d from <strong>Ferrari<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lorientlejour.com\/article\/959159\/ferrari-en-italie-ce-sont-aussi-des-vins-a-bulles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrari, en Italie, ce sont aussi des vins \u00e0 bulles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on December 4, other foreign papers were handing out advice on the best Italian restaurants for readers to try, with the <em>Washington Post <\/em>recommending &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/food\/inferno-pizzeria-napoletana-serves-designer-pies-with-fine-dining-flourishes\/2015\/12\/06\/13a2ea84-9081-11e5-baf4-bdf37355da0c_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inferno Pizzeria Napoletana serves designer pies with fine-dining flourishes<\/a> and <em>El Pais<\/em> suggesting that Madrid\u2019s Trattoria Manzoni is an ambassador for Italian food and wine &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2015\/12\/07\/estilo\/1449469440_908975.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La embajadora de la gastronom\u00eda italiana<\/a>. On December 7, <em>Bloomberg Businessweek<\/em> featured the somewhat unusual story of <strong>Agroittica Lombarda<\/strong>, the Italian company that has become Europe\u2019s greatest producer of caviar&nbsp; now hoping to beat the Russians at their own game &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/photo-essays\/2015-12-07\/caviar-from-italy-is-taking-a-piece-of-the-market-in-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food of the Czars: Italian Caviar Infiltrates the Russian Market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> \u2013 As always, some news on the tourist beat also popped up, with <em>El Pais, <\/em>on December 6, providing its readers with ten places that will make them fall in love with Italy &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elviajero.elpais.com\/elviajero\/2015\/12\/03\/actualidad\/1449137926_011608.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diez momentos para enamorarse de Italia<\/a>, whilst a day later it was the spectacular eruption of <strong>Etna<\/strong>, that featured in the <em>Washington Post<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/mount-etna-erupts-after-two-years-of-silence\/2015\/12\/06\/691af080-9c4b-11e5-8728-1af6af208198_gallery.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Etna erupts after two years of silence<\/a>. Earlier in the week,&nbsp; the <em>New York Times<\/em> ran a piece about a particular aspect of life in Italy, based on a conversation with Mark Molinaro, the Italian-Welsh writer and artist who divides his time between Wales and the Salento&nbsp; &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/06\/magazine\/familiar-ground.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Familiar Ground<\/a>*.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Article available for pay\/with registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 This week, the top stories about Italy in the foreign press have been all about the stage.
