ECONOMY & FINANCE<\/strong> These topics have barely been out of the international press who have continued to provide news of the situation in Italy and the goings on in the country\u2019s major industrial and financial groups.  Eni\u2019s recent discovery of the largest gas field in Egypt has been on all the front pages, with the Financial Times reporting on 30th<\/sup> July that \u201cEni discovers \u2018supergiant\u2019 gasfield near Egypt<\/a>\u201d, and Reuters on 31st<\/sup> August said \u201cItaly’s Italy’s Eni makes mega gas discovery off Egyptian coast<\/a>\u201d whilst on 30th<\/sup> August the Washington Post wrote, \u201cItaly\u2019s Eni finds \u2018supergiant\u2019 natural gas field off Egypt<\/a>\u201d and Bloomberg spoke of  this money making achievement by the Italian petroleum group saying, on 31st<\/sup> August, \u201cEni Sees Biggest Mediterranean Gas Find Boosting Cash Flow<\/a>“.<\/p>\n

The foreign press also wrote about Enel\u2019s 600 million dollar investment in Brazilian solar power: Bloomberg on 1st<\/sup> September said, \u201cEnel Green Power to Invest $600 Million in Brazil Solar Farms<\/a>\u201d. Other articles have covered the results obtained and strategies adopted by the country\u2019s major financial groups, paying particular attention to Mediobanca becoming the major shareholder of an asset manager, with  the Financial Times reporting on 4th<\/sup> August that \u201cMediobanca takes control of London-based Cairn Capital<\/a>\u201d and a day later, Bloomberg wrote that \u201cMediobanca Agrees to Buy Controlling Stake in Cairn Capital<\/a>\u201d, whilst on 6th<\/sup> August Les Echos said \u201cSur une trajectoire positive, Mediobanca avance \u00e0 l’\u00e9tranger<\/a>\u201d. Bloomberg reported even better news on 5th<\/sup> August, stating \u201cMediobanca Surges After Dividend Increases More Than Expected<\/a>\u201d with another piece on Intesa Sanpaolo reporting that it had enjoyed \u201cthe best six month period since 2008\u201d. Reuters in fact, reported the same news on 31st<\/sup> July under the heading \u201cIntesa Sanpaolo posts best first-half profit since 2008<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The latest share prices on the Milan Stock Exchange deserve a separate mention. Much has been said about Poste Italiane\u2019s upcoming IPO, with Reuters, on 11th<\/sup> August, stating that \u201cItaly says to sell up to 40 pct of post office in IPO<\/a>\u201d whilst Les Echos had already reported, on 31st<\/sup> July, that \u201cItalie : Feu vert du conseil de la Poste pour une cotation \u00e0 Milan<\/a>\u201d. The Popolare di Vicenza is also looking to the markets, with Reuters, on 28th<\/sup> August, announcing that \u201cPopolare Vicenza to launch 1.5 bln euro share sale<\/a>\u201d. Aviation and aerospace was the focus of  Reuters\u2019 piece on 13th<\/sup> August that said, \u201cItaly’s Avio mulling IPO on Milan stock market \u2013 sources<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The international press has also taken an interest in Reinhold Messner \u201cthe king of the mountains\u201d who has just finalized the last of his string of museums dedicated to mountaineering in a building, not far from Brunico, designed by Zaha Hadid. \u201cReinhold Messner: King of the mountains<\/a>\u201d said the Financial Times on 7th<\/sup> August. On 10th<\/sup> August, the Washington Post featured an Italian Nobel Laureate and his latest book: \u2018The Pope\u2019s Daughter\u2019 review: Dario Fo\u2019s novel defends the Borgia clan<\/a>\u201d, whilst on 14th<\/sup> August, the Financial Times had a piece about another book, written by British journalist John Foot entitled \u2018The Man Who Closed the Asylums\u2019, by John Foot<\/a>\u201d, a biography of Franco Basaglia, the Italian who revolutionized Mental Health Care.<\/p>\n

MUSIC<\/strong>: On 23rd<\/sup> August, Spain\u2019s El Mundo reported on Andrea Bocelli\u2019s projects that range from the highbrow to pop: \u201cAndrea Bocelli viaja de lo culto a lo popular<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

CINEMA<\/strong>: On 14th<\/sup> July, Le Monde featured actor Christian De Sica and the nonchalance for which he is famous, \u201cChristian De Sica, le d\u00e9sinvolte<\/a>\u201d, whilst on 28th<\/sup> August the Financial Times published its interview with another Italian artist and filmmaker \u201cInterview: Francesco Vezzoli<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Members of the film world, meantime, are preparing for one of their annual appearances on the red carpet as the opening of the Venice Film Festival draws closer, as reported by El Pais on 2nd<\/sup> September, \u201cVenecia oculta su coraz\u00f3n de cine<\/a>\u201d. Le Monde, on the other hand, reported on 27th<\/sup> August on its visit to Bologna\u2019s \u201chospital\u201d for old celluloid film reels \u201cA Bologne, dans la clinique des vieilles bobines<\/a>\u201d. Earlier in the summer, on 31st<\/sup> July, it had also reported on its trip to Sardinia to see the home that Michelangelo Antonioni had built for Monica Vitti \u201cVitti et Antonioni, une passion italienne<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

TOURISM<\/strong>: There has been plenty going on in various Italian cities that has attracted the attention of the foreign press. The Financial Times on 24th<\/sup> August had some suggestions for tourists in an article entitled \u201cSeeing the light at Expo 2015 in Milan<\/a>\u201d and just a day later, the Washington Post reported on the \u201cExhibit focusing on motherhood opens on Expo\u2019s sidelines<\/a>)\u201d.  Other parts of the peninsula have not been ignored, with a Sunday Times\u2019 piece on 9th<\/sup> August about \u201cThe big weekend: Turin<\/a>\u201d and on 25th<\/sup> August, the New York Times featured Italy\u2019s eastern mountains in its article: \u201cIn Italy, Hiking and Haute Cuisine in the Dolomites<\/a>\u201d.  Cremona was mentioned in another NYT piece on 3rd<\/sup> September, \u201cThere\u2019s More to Cremona Than Violins<\/a>\u201d, and one of Italy\u2019s most popular regions featured in The Times on 29th<\/sup> August with \u201cThe 20 best rural retreats in Tuscany<\/a>\u201d, whilst \u201cExploring Assisi in Italy<\/a>\u201d, published by the New York Times on 23rd<\/sup> August meant that neighboring Umbria also got a mention, as did Campania in El Mundo\u2019s piece on Pompei dated 4th<\/sup> August \u201cLas puertas del “Gimnasio Grande” de Pompeya vuelven a abrirse<\/a>\u201d. Basilicata was Le Monde\u2019s choice, describing it as an unknown beauty of southern Italy \u201cBasilicate, la belle inconnue du sud de l\u2019Italie<\/a>\u201d whilst Germany\u2019s die Welt described, on 27th<\/sup> August, how a preference for the south of the country brings Italians together, at least for the summer, \u201cIn Sommer ist sich Italien selbst genug<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

FOOD & WINE<\/strong> is an important contributor to tourism in Italy: on 30th<\/sup> July the Wall Street Journal revealed \u201cWhy Piedmont is the New Burgundy<\/a>\u201d, whilst Bloomberg\u2019s piece dated 9th<\/sup> August was all about a 2011 vintage Tuscan wine: \u201cSassicaia 2011 Wine Takes Largest Share of Liv-ex Trading<\/a>\u201d and on 1st<\/sup> September, Brazil\u2019s Valor Economico featured the vineyard in Trentino Alto Adige where Ferrari Spumante was born \u201cEspumante Ferrari sobe as montanhas para manter seu estilo<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Italian food is not just a magnet that draws foreigners to \u2018il Bel Paese\u2019 however, although writer Rachel Roddy did hone her \u201cculinary education\u201d here according to the report in the Financial Times on 21st<\/sup> August, \u201cSicily and Rome: two journeys, two kitchens<\/a>\u201d.  Italian cuisine can be found all over the world, and in fact on 28th<\/sup> August the New York times recommended one particular place to enjoy it in the Big Apple \u201cAt Lucali, Pizza for the A-List and the Landlady Upstairs<\/a>\u201d, whilst a Washington Post article on 8th<\/sup> August was all about Apulian food \u201cMasseria offers diners an out-of-the-way escape to Puglia<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

ITALIAN FASHION & STYLE<\/strong> are always popular subjects and on 2nd<\/sup> September Le Monde published an interview with one particular icon in this field Giorgio Armani: \u201cGiorgio Armani : \u201cJe suis rest\u00e9 ind\u00e9pendant pour garder la ma\u00eetrise de mon esth\u00e9tique\u201d<\/a>\u201d and on 7th<\/sup> September the Financial Times had a piece all about the new Valentino collections designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli: \u201cThe eternal grace of Valentino<\/a>\u201d. On 19th<\/sup> August, the Wall Street Journal dedicated several column inches to Ferragamo\u2019s Hollywood inspired collection \u201cFerragamo Designs Local Items for New Stores<\/a>\u201d and a week later, on 26th<\/sup> August, also printed a piece on another Italian fashion guru \u201cBrunello Cucinelli\u2019s Profits Rises on U.S., China Growth<\/a>\u201d. It was the turn of the Trussardi family and its fashion empire to star in a feature in the 29th<\/sup> August edition of Icon El Pais \u201cLos Trussardi, de c\u00f3mo superar la tragedia y levantar un imperio<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

On 20th<\/sup> August, the Wall Street Journal ventured away from the big names in fashion, publishing an interview with Marco Baldassarri all about the emerging Italian brand \u2018eleventy\u2019 and its more accessible prices: \u201cItalian Men\u2019s Clothes Minus the Sticker Shock<\/a>\u201d. Italian style also lay at the heart of articles about  motor racing. On 29th<\/sup> August, El Pais wrote about the relaunching of Alfa Romeo \u201cLa dura batalla de Alfa Romeo<\/a>\u201d but it was Ferrari that featured in the Times on 7th<\/sup> August, \u201cThe New Ferrari 488 Makes You Feel Even More Awesome Than You Actually Are<\/a>\u201d. Expansion, however, chose to write about the eternal rivalry between the Prancing Horse and the Bull, publishing a piece, on 4th<\/sup> August entitled \u201cLamborghini y Ferrari: la lucha entre el toro y el caballo<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
