The <em>Financial Times <\/em>in particular analyzed the improved circumstances in Italy on its comments pages, discussing the changes underway and then still to come (May 29 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/7815f214-0453-11e5-95ad-00144feabdc0.html?siteedition=intl#axzz3bt3kg8wk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy: Back on its feet<\/a>*). Statistics are encouraging. The <em>Wall Street Times<\/em>, for example, explained how Italy, along with Spain, is leading the recovery of manufacturing in Europe (June 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/eurozone-manufacturing-grows-in-may-1433148769?KEYWORDS=italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain, Italy Lead Pickup in Eurozone Manufacturing Activity<\/a>*). Interest in the Italian market can also be seen with the arrival of foreign investments, such as Qatar Airways interest in saving Meridiana (<em>Les Echos<\/em>, June 3 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/monde\/europe\/021106777541-ca-se-passe-en-europe-qatar-airways-pret-a-voler-a-la-rescousse-de-meridiana-en-sardaigne-1124836.php?9oxstYi612PuLEGO.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ca se passe en Europe : Qatar Airways pr\u00eat \u00e0 voler \u00e0 la rescousse de Meridiana en Sardaigne<\/a>*)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fashion<\/strong> \u2013 There are other reports on one of Made in Italy\u2019s most important sectors, (and increasingly reported in the Italian press): fashion. The <em>Financial Times<\/em> dedicates a long profile-interview to the founder of Yoox, the luxury e-commerce group, <strong>Federicao Marchetti <\/strong>(May 29 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/2\/4d842f1a-0396-11e5-a70f-00144feabdc0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lunch with the FT: Federico Marchetti<\/a>*), and the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> tells its readers about the chic of designer <strong>Francesca Ruffini <\/strong>(May 29 &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/francesca-ruffini-debuts-chic-loungewear-line-1432831389?KEYWORDS=italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Francesca Ruffini Debuts Chic Loungewear Line<\/a>*). <em>El Mundo<\/em>, on the other hand, published an article on the <strong>Ferragamo <\/strong>proposal with Lungarno Collection for an exclusive luxury hotel (June 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocholeguas.com\/2015\/05\/22\/hoteles\/1432286332.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La exclusividad de Ferragamo en versi\u00f3n hotel<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>There was also interest in the high end automobile sector, with the new <strong>Zagato<\/strong> <strong>Monster<\/strong>, just introduced by the famous Italian design house together with Maserati (<em>Valor Economico<\/em>, June 2 &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.valor.com.br\/cultura\/4076718\/um-maserati-de-ar-retro-para-poucos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Um Maserati de ar retr\u00f4 para poucos<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong> \u2013 There were also several articles on tourism, with the <em>Washington Post<\/em> running a photographic journey around the pavillions at Expo (June 2 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/food\/visiting-the-worlds-fair\/2015\/06\/02\/5b663bf4-0946-11e5-a7ad-b430fc1d3f5c_gallery.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Visiting the world\u2019s fair<\/a>), <em>The Times<\/em> disccovering the charming Lazio landscape (May 30 &#8211; Ancient towns, hot springs and blissful scenery in Lazio*) and the <em>Financial Times<\/em> that showed its readers a symbolic photo of Italian Republic Day, as celebrated in Italy\u2019s capital (2 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ft.com\/photo-diary\/2015\/06\/italian-republic-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo Diary &#8211; Italian Republic Day<\/a> ). Again in Rome,<em> Le Monde<\/em> spoke about the rebirth of the frescoes in the <strong>Farnese Palace <\/strong>(May 29 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/culture\/article\/2015\/05\/28\/dans-la-galerie-des-carrache-a-rome-les-dieux-renaissent_4642687_3246.html#DdT8PeoBPzP6m2Qc.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dans la galerie des Carrache, \u00e0 Rome, les dieux renaissent<\/a>*), while <em>Liberation<\/em> traveled though the history of the Eternal City, using documents found in the State Archives (May 31 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/caos.blogs.liberation.fr\/2015\/05\/31\/voyage-dans-les-archives-de-la-ville-eternelle-rome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Voyage dans les archives de la ville \u00e9ternelle : Rome<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>The dream of an Italian vacation appeared on TV as well as in the papers. The American TV anchor Kathy McCabe explained to the <em>New York Times <\/em>why she loves Italy so much that she dedicated the program Dream of Italy to the country (3 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/07\/travel\/why-kathy-mccabe-loves-italy.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Kathy McCabe Loves Italy<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there was interest in travel literature with a review of Gironimo, where the author, Tim Moore, traced the events of the 1914 Tour of Italy (<em>New York Times<\/em>, May 29 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/31\/books\/review\/gironimo-and-lanterne-rouge.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Gironimo!\u2019 and \u2018Lanterne Rouge\u2019<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food and wine<\/strong> \u2013 Cooking is another ongoing theme, with reports that the <strong>Osteria Francescana<\/strong> has taken second place in the rankings of the 50 best restaurants worldwide (<em>Bloomberg<\/em>, June 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-06-01\/el-celler-de-can-roca-takes-first-place-at-world-s-50-best-restaurants-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Celler de Can Roca Takes First Place at World\u2019s 50 Best Restaurant Awards<\/a>; <em>Financial Times<\/em>, June 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/f0888746-08a6-11e5-b38c-00144feabdc0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old-world dominance of cuisine shifts<\/a>*). The <em>New York Times <\/em>magazine ran an article on the Sardinian chef <strong>Simone Tondo <\/strong>success in Paris (June 3 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/03\/paris-food-guide-chef-simone-tondo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Sardinian Chef Dishes on His Parisian Pleasures<\/a>). Finally, reguarding coffee, <strong>Andrea Illy<\/strong> told the Brazilian paper <em>Valor Economico<\/em> about his company\u2019s obsession for quality (June 3 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valor.com.br\/cultura\/4078684\/o-cafe-custara-mais-caro-diz-andrea-illy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cO cafe custara mais caro\u201d diz Andrea Illy<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture<\/strong> \u2013 The foreign press spoke about literature last week: <em>The Times<\/em> explained on its editorial page why it is still interesting to read <strong>Dante<\/strong> today (May 30 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/tto\/opinion\/columnists\/article4455517.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">750 years on, why take Dante off the shelf?<\/a>*) and <em>Le Monde <\/em>interviewed&nbsp; <strong>Umberto Eco<\/strong> on his latest book (May 30 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/idees\/article\/2015\/05\/30\/umberto-eco-que-vive-le-journalisme-critique_4644090_3232.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Umberto Eco : \u201cQue vive le journalisme critique!\u201d<\/a>*). The French paper also made room for <strong>Dario Fo<\/strong> and his most recent work \u201cUn uomo bruciato vivo\u201d (June 4 &#8211; Dario Fo, en mouvement perp\u00e9tuel*).<\/p>\n<p><em>Le Monde<\/em> also wrote about theater, with articles on dancer <strong>Alesandro Sciarroni <\/strong>(June 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/scenes\/article\/2014\/09\/03\/alessandro-sciarroni-la-danse-comme-un-jeu-de-quilles_4481416_1654999.html#IwJOdmwgtswElcj8.99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alessandro Sciarroni : la danse comme un jeu de quilles<\/a>*) and director <strong>Romeo Castellucci<\/strong> (June 1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/scenes\/article\/2014\/09\/03\/romeo-castellucci-fauteur-de-trouble_4481351_1654999.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romeo Castellucci, fauteur de trouble<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>There was also interest in photography with 50 portraits by <strong>Tima Modotti<\/strong>, shown for the first time in Spain (<em>El Pais,<\/em> June 2 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/cultura.elpais.com\/cultura\/2015\/06\/02\/actualidad\/1433247527_809563.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tina Modotti, retratista de M\u00e9xico<\/a>), and for music by the Italian duo <strong>Voices From The Lake, <\/strong>which presented its latest album, &#8220;Live at MAXXI,&#8221; in Paris (<em>Liberation<\/em>, May 29 &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/culture\/2015\/05\/27\/voices-from-the-lake-langueur-d-onde_1317791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Voices From the Lake : langueur d\u2019onde<\/a>). &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>* marked articles viewable online upon payment or registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The economy, on its feet again<\/strong> &#8211; In a week where electional news predominated, the positive news from Italy was first of all about the economy.
