Growth returns<\/strong> – The foreign press has asserted that Italy is leaving the recession behind and sees 2015 as a year of growth. This is seen not only in the ISTAT data reported by the New York Times<\/em> (May 8 – Italy’s Economy Seen Returning to Growth in 2015<\/a>) Washington Post<\/em> (May 8 – Italy\u2019s economy seen returning to growth in 2015<\/a>), Bloomberg<\/em> (May 13 – Italian Economy Grows, Paving Way for Possible End to Slump<\/a>) and Le Monde<\/em> (May 13 – L\u2019Italie retrouve enfin la croissance<\/a>) and Les Echos<\/em> (May 13 –L\u2019Italie \u00e9merge finalement de plus de trois ans de r\u00e9cession<\/a>), but also in the forecasts of the country\u2019s two major credit institutions, which \u2013 as Les Echos<\/em> states \u2013 believe in an acceleration of the economy (May 13 – Intesa SanPaolo et UniCredit croient \u00e0 l’acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration de la reprise italienne<\/a>*). Positive signals are also reflected in the credit sector. Intesa Sanpaolo<\/strong> has exceded analysts\u2019 expectations (Financial Times<\/em>, May 11 – Intesa Sanpaolo\u2019s net profits rise on improved trading<\/a>; Bloomberg<\/em>, 11 – Intesa Quarterly Profit Beats Estimates on Trading Income<\/a>), as has Mediobanca <\/strong>(Reuters<\/em>, May 8 – Mediobanca Q3 net profit doubles to top forecast<\/a>), while UBI <\/strong>has seen growth in net earnings and capital reserves (Reuters<\/em>, May 13 – UBI Q1 net profit rises, boosts core capital<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The rebirth of Milan<\/strong> \u2013 The spotlights are still turned on Milan, with a series of projects tied to Expo. The Financial Times<\/em> reported on the city\u2019s rebirth, thanks to the architectural renewal in new districts suchas as Citylife and Porta Nuova (May 8 – How Milan\u2019s architectural makeover is boosting city\u2019s renaissance<\/a>*). Renewal is also seen in new initiatives of the National Chamber of Fashion<\/strong>, which is planning to challenge Paris, New York and London to reclaim leadership in the sector (New York Times<\/em>, May 12 – Italian Fashion Makes a Bid for Global Leadership<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The wealth of culture is also making a decision change in how the city is perceived. The recently inaugurated Prada Foundation<\/strong> continues to attract the interest of the foreign press, such as Les Echos<\/em> (May 10 –  Nathalie Obadia : \u00abLa Fondation Prada va avoir un impact majeur en Italie\u00bb<\/a>*), Financial Times<\/em> (May 8 – Seven exhibitions inaugurate Milan\u2019s Prada Foundation<\/a>*) and Time<\/em>, which wrote about the new Bar Luce<\/strong> run by director Wes Anderson inside Expo (May 12- This Wes Anderson-Themed Cafe Just Opened in Milan<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Italian culture, from the Biennale to Cannes<\/strong> \u2013 There is more to culture than Milan and interest also went to the year\u2019s other great event: the Venice Biennale. Le Monde<\/em> took its readers on a tour of the pavilions (May 8 – De l’art, des armes et des larmes \u00e0 la Biennale de Venise<\/a>), and the New York Times<\/em> wrote about how the presence of female artists has taken centre stage this year (May 10 – Venice Biennale Represents Rebalancing in the Art World<\/a>*). Finally, Bloomberg Businessweek<\/em>, published an article on the new concepts arriving from China (May 13 –  China Ditches Feng Shui For Avant Garde Show At Venice Biennale<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Still in Veneto, if not in the lagoon, the Financial Times<\/em> visited the exhibition Carpaccio, Vittore and Benedetto from Venice to Istria, in Conegliano<\/strong>, presenting some little known masterpieces of this family of painters ( 10 – Carpaccio: Vittore and Benedetto from Venice to Istria, Palazzo Sarcinelli, Conegliano, Italy \u2014 review<\/a>*). El Pais<\/em> told its readers about 13 tourist and cultural destinations off the beaten track (May 13 – Trece pistas italianas fuera de ruta<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There was also space in the cultural pages of the foreign press for cinema and literature. The New York Times<\/em> wrote about the assault of Italian writers at the Festival of Cannes, where Matteo Garrone<\/strong>, Nanni Moretti<\/strong> and Paolo Sorrentino<\/strong> are competing (May 13 – Italian Directors Take the Cannes Film Festival by Storm<\/a>) and Liberation<\/em> published a review of the latest book by Umberto Eco<\/strong> (May 13 – Umberto Eco, au nom du z\u00e9ro<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Cooking and the agrifood sector<\/strong> \u2013 Items on cooking and the Italian agrifood business is obligatory during Expo. L’Orient le Jour<\/em> ran a piece about the melding of innovation and food proposed by Expo (May 8 – \u00c0 Milan, l\u2019avenir est d\u00e9j\u00e0 au supermarch\u00e9<\/a>), the Financial Times<\/em> travelled around the peninsula to try of the country\u2019s most exclusive wines (May 8 – Italy\u2019s precious past<\/a>*), and New York Times<\/em> posted a video on its site about how to make fresh pasta (May 8 – Fresh Pasta, Made Simply<\/a>*). Meanwhile, The Times <\/em>suggest the best ways to discover the Mediterranean taste of Apulia (May 9 – Eat! A taste of Puglia<\/a>), Reuters<\/em> focused on finance, and coffee giant Lavazza\u2019s <\/strong>plans for growth through acquisitions <\/strong>(May 12 – Lavazza wants to expand through acquisitions<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Fashion and style <\/strong>\u2013 In the space usually dedicated to fashion and style, there is an article about Yoox<\/strong>, whose sales are even better than predicted (Reuters<\/em>, May 11 – Italy’s Yoox meets forecasts with flat core profit ahead of merger<\/a>) and the marketing initiatives of Ferrari, <\/strong>which is planning to open another theme park in Spain, after that of Abud Dhabi (Expansion<\/em>, 8 – Ferrari construir\u00e1 su parque tem\u00e1tico junto a ‘PortAventura’<\/a>; El Mundo<\/em>, May 11 – Ferrari Land arranca motores<\/a>). There was also interest in design, with portraits of Giampiero Bodino<\/strong>, a high end jeweler, New York Times<\/em>, May 14 – The Ideal of Luxury<\/a>) and two stars of interior design, Rodolfo Dordoni<\/strong> (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em>, May 11 –  Er denkt funktional<\/a>) and  Giulio Iacchetti<\/strong> (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em>, May 10 – Mehrweg ist auch ein Weg<\/a>).<\/p>\n
