This is the fairy tale that the foreign press told about Women\u2019s Fashion Week, which just ended in Milan. Tale spinners included the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, which discussed how the nomadic spirit of the catwalk spread throughout the city (February 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/marni-seized-by-nomadic-spirit\/2014\/02\/23\/5016faac-9c84-11e3-8112-52fdf646027b_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sicilian fairy tale, nomadic spirit infuse Milan<\/a>), <em>Arab News<\/em>, which described the magnificent end to the event (February 27 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/news\/530716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fantasy, furs draw Milan week to positive end<\/a>), and the Chinese <em>Global Times<\/em>, which ran a piece on the young talent events (February 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/content\/844067.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Vogue Talents Corner.com celebrates fresh creativity at Milan Fashion Week<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The French paper <em>L\u2019Express<\/em>, paying tribute to beauty icon <strong>Carla Sozzani, <\/strong>underlined that Italian beauty was everywhere (February 26 &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lexpress.fr\/styles\/mode\/carla-sozzani-fondatrice-du-concept-store-10-corso-como-la-beaute-est-partout-en-italie_1495045.html?xtmc=italie&amp;xtcr=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Carla Sozzani: &#8220;La beaut\u00e9 est partout en Italie&#8221;<\/a>), while other papers wrote about some of the Italian collections, from <strong>Prada<\/strong> <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Bloomberg Businessweek<\/em>, February 21 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/ap\/2014-02-21\/pradas-woman-is-a-fun-loving-floozy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prada&#8217;s woman is a fun-loving floozy<\/a>) to <strong>Cavalli<\/strong> (<em>Washington Post<\/em>, February 22 &#8211;&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/cavalli-turns-up-temperature-with-ring-of-fire\/2014\/02\/22\/e2237e0e-9be2-11e3-8112-52fdf646027b_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cavalli turns up temperature with fiery looks<\/a>), and <strong>Armani<\/strong> (<em>Bloomberg Businessweek<\/em>, February 24 &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/ap\/2014-02-24\/lime-illuminates-gray-at-armani-in-milan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Lime illuminates gray at Armani in Milan<\/a>) and <strong>Missoni <\/strong>(<em>New York Times<\/em>, February 24 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/25\/fashion\/missoni-focuses-on-textures.html?hpw&amp;rref=fashion&amp;action=click&amp;module=Search&amp;region=searchResults#0&amp;version=&amp;url=http:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/search\/sitesearch\/?action=click&amp;region=Masthead&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;module=SearchSubmit&amp;contentCollection=Homepage&amp;t=qry761%23\/italy\/since1851\/allresults\/1\/allauthors\/newest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Missoni, With Texture<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>And there was also room for business along side pieces on the new trends. Some articles discussed brand growth \u2013 especially in for cashmere \u2013 like <strong>Agnona<\/strong> (<em>New York Times<\/em>, February 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/24\/fashion\/agnona-to-grow-with-stefano-pilati-designs.html?hpw&amp;rref=fashion&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">With Stefano Pilati Designs, Agnona Intends to Grow<\/a>) and <strong>Cruciani<\/strong> (<em>Bloomberg Businessweek<\/em>, February 21 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/ap\/2014-02-21\/italian-cashmere-maker-cruciani-poised-for-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian cashmere maker Cruciani poised for growth<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture: cinema, art, literature<\/strong> \u2013 The week also brought a wealth of articles on culture. Pride of place belonged to <strong>The Great Beauty<\/strong>, a film that, according to the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, was a favorite to win an Oscar (February 26 &#8211;&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posttv\/business\/italys-the-great-beauty-favorite-for-oscar-win\/2014\/02\/26\/e1ab4174-9f06-11e3-878c-65222df220eb_video.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy&#8217;s &#8216;The Great Beauty&#8217; favorite for Oscar win<\/a>). And Paolo Sorrentino\u2019s film continued as a critical success in the foreign press. This time, it was the Argentinian <em>Clarin<\/em> that described the decadent Rome, the backdrop as well as a star of the movie (February 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarin.com\/espectaculos\/Roma-fiesta_0_1088291300.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roma era una fiesta<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>There was also space for more classical mentions of Italian culture. The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> visited the Guggenheim show in New York on <strong>Italian Futurists<\/strong> (February 25 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702304610404579403381342674644?KEYWORDS=futurism&amp;mg=reno64-wsj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Italian Futurism, 1909-1944&#8217; at the Guggenheim Museum<\/a>*), while <em>El Pais<\/em> rediscovered Orlando Furioso, narrated in prose by <strong>Italo Calvino<\/strong>. According to the paper, the work made it possible to rediscover a classic, while bringing the model reader to a parallel and perhaps a temporal theater, compared to that of Ariosto (February 25 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/cultura.elpais.com\/cultura\/2014\/02\/25\/actualidad\/1393344466_886757.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italo Calvino, al galope del hipogrifo<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism, food and wine, from Venice to Sardinia<\/strong> \u2013 As usual, there were articles on tourist sites. The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> told its readers about the less commonly travelled canals in <strong>Venice<\/strong> ( February 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702303650204579375263142689146\">The Canal Less Traveled*<\/a>), explaining to readers how to find a second house on the Lagoon, hunting down the city\u2019s authentic side (20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702304275304579394912347808666?KEYWORDS=italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;Second-Home Hunters Find the Authentic Side of Venice* <\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>While <em>El Pais<\/em> told its readers how easy it is to fall in love with <strong>Tuscany<\/strong> and its landscapes, a patrimony of humanity (February &nbsp;26 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/elviajero.elpais.com\/elviajero\/2014\/02\/26\/actualidad\/1393423736_176216.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C\u00f3mo enamorarse de la Toscana<\/a>), the <em>Times <\/em>dedicated its travel section to family vacations, starting with <strong>Sardinia<\/strong> (February 22 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/tto\/travel\/article4012282.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel doctor: a family holiday in Italy or Sardinia<\/a>*). The <em>New York Times<\/em> also wrote about the region, suggesting a bike trip to discover the island, its food and its history (February 20 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/intransit.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/20\/sardinian-food-and-history-via-bike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sardinian Food and History, Via Bike<\/a>), while the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> &nbsp;reported on the plan of <strong>Eataly<\/strong> and the city of Bologna to create a food theme park, a sort of Disneyland of Food in the Emilian city (February 25 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702304899704579391172136776840?KEYWORDS=italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Fund Plans Food Theme Park<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Another two articles were also dedicated to Italy\u2019s culinary genius. One was published by the <em>Financial Times<\/em> and explained how to make minestra &nbsp;(February 21 &#8211;&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/2\/b367ff64-8ceb-11e3-ad57-00144feab7de.html#slide0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recipe: la minestra<\/a>) and the other in <em>The Times<\/em> with a recipe for a special ingredient: pink radicchio (February 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesundaytimes.co.uk\/sto\/Magazine\/article1377531.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Ingredient: Pink radicchio<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The economy<\/strong> \u2013 no less important, but with minor emphasis last week was economic news. The foreign press continued to note the record drop in public debts rates (<em>Bloomberg Businessweek<\/em>, February 26 febbraio- <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/news\/2014-02-26\/italy-borrowing-costs-drop-to-record-low-at-bill-auction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy Borrowing Costs Drop to Record Low at Bill Auction<\/a>), and contained in-depth articles on the Italian economy. The <em>Financial Times<\/em> for example, in its Monday interview, wrote about a conversation with the president of the overseeing board of Intesa Sanpasolo, <strong>Giovanni Bazoli<\/strong> (February 23 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/00ff9fcc-9a28-11e3-a407-00144feab7de.html?siteedition=intl#axzz2uE2eX0W7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giovanni Bazoli, chairman, Intesa Sanpaolo<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>* marked articles viewable online upon payment or registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fashion Week<\/strong> \u2013 Talent, imagination, beauty.
