Great Beauty wins an Oscar <\/strong>\u2013 After 15 years, an Academy Award for Italy, a country with a running subscription for this kind of prize, having been awarded several Oscars through the years for best foreign film (El Pais<\/em> – Italia, un pa\u00eds abonado al Oscar<\/a>). On March 2 and 3, news of the award to The Great Beauty made the rounds of the international press, from the US (Washington Post<\/em> – ‘Great Beauty’ wins best foreign language Oscar<\/a>; New York Times<\/em> – Oscars 2014: Winners and Losers<\/a>) to Brazil (O Globo<\/em> – ‘A Grande Beleza’, da It\u00e1lia, ganha Oscar de filme estrangeiro<\/a>), Spain (El Pais<\/em> – El Oscar corona a \u2018La gran belleza\u2019<\/a>), Belgium (Le Soir<\/em> – \u00ab La musique de la d\u00e9mocratie, c\u2019est la peur \u00bb<\/a>) and China (Global Times<\/em> –Italian film The Great Beauty wins Oscar for best foreign language film<\/a>). Along with news of the Oscar, papers also quoted Paolo Sorrentino<\/strong>. The Argentinian paper Clarin<\/em> reported on the director\u2019s statement that one source of inspiration was Diego Armando Maradona (Con dedicatoria a Maradona, el Oscar a la pel\u00edcula en idioma extranjero se fue para Italia<\/a>), while, in an interview a few days before the ceremony, Sorrentino told the Wall Street Journal<\/em> about some of the film\u2019s secrets, underlining that Italy is a perfect place for inspiration \u201d (February 28 – Director Paolo Sorrentino on Film and the Oscars | 20 Odd Questions<\/a>). Finally, the spotlight fell on the movie\u2019s real star, Roma, a city undergoing changes that were explained by Bloombuerg Businessweek<\/em> (March 3 – Rome’s Oscar Triumph and the Way Cities Change (or Don’t)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Culture<\/strong>: from tourist attractions to the Futurists \u2013 <\/strong>Rome remained in center stage with suggestions for tourists published in The Times<\/em> with an interactive map for visitors (March 2 – Ultimate cities: Rome <\/a>* ). There were also ideas for a child-sized vacation in Lucca<\/strong> (The Times<\/em>,March 1 – Lucca: Tuscany for toddlers and their families<\/a>*) (February 28 – Renaissance villas in Veneto, Italy<\/a>) and Veneto<\/strong>, with the Financial Times <\/em>proposing a tour of the Renaissance villas in the region (February 28 – Renaissance villas in Veneto, Italy<\/a>). And while culinary culture was also touched on (New York Times, March 5 –Butternut Squash Polenta With Sausage and Onion<\/a>), Time<\/em> browsed through Italy\u2019s artistic history, with an article on the exhibit on the Futurists<\/strong> at the Guggenheim of New York (March 10 edition – The Guggenheim Goes Back to the Futurists<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Italian fashion from Milan to Paris<\/strong> \u2013 High interest in Italian fashion continued with a synthesis of the events of Milan Fashion Week. The Financial Times <\/em>wrote on the trends seen on the catwalk (February 28 –Womenswear trends in Milan?<\/a>), while the Wall Street Journal<\/em> ran a piece on how new designers brought new allure  (February 28 – Young Designers Bring Sexy Spirit to Milan Fashion Week *<\/a>). Instead, the New York Times<\/em> described the Valentino collections shown in Paris (March 5 – Valentino Goes Italian Pop<\/a>), while \u2013 again in the French capital \u2013 Le Monde<\/em> discovered Alessia Xoccato<\/strong>, the talented Italian creator who is still unknown in France (March 5 – Alessia Xoccato, architecte textile \u00e0 l\u2019italienne<\/a>). And while L\u2019Express<\/em> dedicated a piece on Italian jewelry that sparkles across borders (February 28 – La joaillerie italienne, riche en h\u00e9ritage<\/a>),the Financial Times<\/em> reported on the recent investment of Blackstone in the capital of Versace<\/strong> and how that demonstrates the interest the funds have in the luxury goods sector (February 28 – Versace deal highlights appeal for buyout groups<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The economy<\/strong> \u2013 The foreign press also wrote about economic news. The Brazilian Valor Economico <\/em>reported on a record drop in BTP rates  (February 28 – It\u00e1lia atrai forte demanda e paga juros baixos em leil\u00e3o de t\u00edtulos<\/a>), and the Chinese Global Times<\/em> ran an article on future Italian investments in Iran\u2019s mining industry (March 2 Iran woos Italian investment to boost mining sector<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There was news from the automotive world, with papers talking about the new jeep to be manufactured in Italy by Fiat-Chrysler<\/strong> (Bloomberg<\/em>, 3 – Jeep Baby Has Italian Accent in Fiat-Chrysler Merger Test<\/a>), and the record sales of Ducati<\/strong> in 2013 (Expansion<\/em>, February 28 – Ducati bate r\u00e9cord de ventas en 2013<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There were interviews on economic themes. ENI\u2019s president Giuseppe Recchi<\/strong> explained to El Pais<\/em> his strategy to relaunch investments and jobs in Europe  (28 – \u201cEn Europa hay que acortar el tiempo de decisi\u00f3n de los j\u00f3venes sobre sus estudios\u201d<\/a>), and Massimo Banzi<\/strong> told the Spanish paper about the application of Arduino, the platform developed at Interaction Design Institute di Ivrea, an instrument for designers and entrepreneurs (February 28 – Banzi: \u201cLas grandes empresas est\u00e1n desconectadas de la realidad\u201d<\/a>).<\/p>\n
