{"id":71901,"date":"2013-07-03T11:08:29","date_gmt":"2013-07-03T09:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/pin\/monitoring-period-may-1-31-2013\/"},"modified":"2013-07-03T11:08:29","modified_gmt":"2013-07-03T09:08:29","slug":"monitoring-period-may-1-31-2013","status":"publish","type":"pin","link":"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/pin\/monitoring-period-may-1-31-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Monitoring period from May 1-31, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The level of exposure given by major international scientific journals during the month of May to studies conducted by Italian researchers remained more or less stable, with 42 articles published, involving the contribution of 333 researchers working across 109 Italian research centers.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the customary coverage dominated by Italian contributions in the field of oncology (6 studies involving 47 researchers at 18 laboratories, with publications appearing in <em>The Lancet Oncology<\/em> and in specialized journals of the <em>Nature<\/em> group, including <em>Cell Death and Disease<\/em> and <em>Oncogene<\/em>), the monitoring for this month also brought to light items relating to Italian research in the area of neurology (covering 7 studies by 54 researchers at 10 centers, with related articles published in <em>Cell Death and Disease<\/em>, <em>Neuropsychopharmacology<\/em> and <em>Scientific Reports<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>In the field of neurobiology, worthy of special mention is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scripps.edu\/news\/press\/2013\/20130612roberto.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted by a team at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) and headed by Marisa Roberto (a member of Aspen\u2019s \u201cItalian talent abroad\u201d group). The work explores the role that a region of the brain \u2013 the central amygdala \u2013 plays in sustaining cocaine addiction, a line of research discussed by Roberto during <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/national-interest\/article\/burst-optimism-what%E2%80%99s-needed-kick-start-italian-research-interview-marisa-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an interview with the Aspen Italia website<\/a> back in July 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, also of note is the contribution in the area of organ transplants by Paolo Muiesan, a surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where he conducts clinical research into \u201cnon-heart-beating\u201d donor transplants. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/national-interest\/article\/using-007-style-gadgets-we%E2%80%99re-improving-success-rate-%E2%80%98non-heart-beating-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In an interview with the Aspen Italia website team<\/a>, he explains the challenges posed by this type of surgery and new solutions that he and his team are working to come up with in order to improve the functioning of organs removed after the circulatory arrest of a donor.
