The news of the pontiff\u2019s withdrawal, announced on February 12, was covered by all over the world, from Spain (<em>El Pais <\/em>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/internacional.elpais.com\/internacional\/2013\/02\/12\/actualidad\/1360703369_762736.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Papa renuncia para limpiar el Vaticano<\/a>) to Brazil &nbsp;(<em>Folha de S. Paulo<\/em> &#8211;&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.folha.uol.com.br\/mundo\/1229314-papa-bento-16-vai-renunciar-diz-agencia.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bento 16 renuncia; novo papa deve ser escolhido at\u00e9 a P\u00e1scoa<\/a>), as well as France (<em>Les Echos <\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/economie-politique\/politique\/actu\/0202559429535-hollande-et-benoit-xvi-l-indifference-cordiale-537481.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollande et Beno\u00eet XVI, l\u2019indiff\u00e9rence cordiale<\/a>) and the United Kingdom&nbsp; (<em>The Guardian<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2013\/feb\/11\/benedict-placehold-pope-weakened-church\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benedict the placeholder pope leaves a battered, weakened church<\/a>). The reporting was accompanied by analysis \u2013 for example the <em>New York Times<\/em> wondered about the Church\u2019s ability to change Chiesa (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/02\/13\/opinion\/new-pope-ive-given-up-hope.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Pope? I\u2019ve Given Up Hope<\/a>) \u2013 and articles speculating on who would be Joseph Ratzinger\u2019s successor &nbsp;(<em>Time<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/world.time.com\/2013\/02\/11\/who-will-be-the-next-pope-bookmakers-place-their-bets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Who Will Be the Next Pope? Bookmakers Place Their Bets<\/a>). Finally, there were some references to Italy, especially Nanni Moretti who imagined a pope\u2019s resignation in his moved \u201cHabemus Papam\u201d (<em>La Nacion<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lanacion.com.ar\/1553994-el-increible-anticipo-de-nanni-moretti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El incre\u00edble anticipo de Nanni Moretti<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The final sprint of the elections<\/strong> \u2013 Although less space was dedicated to the elections because of the pope\u2019s announcement, the foreign press was still interested and \u2013 with the end of the campaign in sight \u2013 started asking new questions about Italy\u2019s future. The British weekly <em>The Economist<\/em> (Feb. 15 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/leaders\/21571891-europes-most-sluggish-economy-needs-more-mario-montis-reforms-who-can-save-italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Who can save Italy?<\/a> ) explained that while Italy was better off than other countries in southern Europe, cannot stop the reforms underway. <em>Publico<\/em> asked another question \u201cWhat if no one wins the elections?\u201d (Feb. 10 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publico.pt\/mundo\/jornal\/e-se-ninguem-vencer-as-eleicoes-italianas-26029826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E se ningu\u00e9m vencer as elei\u00e7\u00f5es italianas?<\/a>*). The Portuguese paper expressed a widespread concern found in other papers. On Febuary 15, the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> wrote that polls have not shown any clear majorities (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/eurocrisis\/2013\/02\/14\/italian-polls-dont-point-at-a-strong-majority-for-next-government\/?KEYWORDS=italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Polls Don&#8217;t Point at a Strong Majority for Next Government<\/a>) while <em>El Pais <\/em>(Feb. 9 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/internacional.elpais.com\/internacional\/2013\/02\/09\/actualidad\/1360441321_016838.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los sondeos alertan de que Italia se enfrenta al desgobierno<\/a> ) discusses the risks that the country will become ungovernable. This uncertainty, says the German paper <em>Handelsblatt<\/em> is reflected on the performance of Italian bonds &nbsp;(Feb. 12 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.handelsblatt.com\/finanzen\/boerse-maerkte\/anleihen\/berlusconi-verunsichert-italiens-anleiherendite-steigt-vor-den-wahlen\/7772070.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italiens Anleiherendite steigt vor der Wahlen<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The return of the Duetto<\/strong> \u2013 But Italian politics is not the only interest of the foreign press. As customary, there are references to Italian design and life style. The new <strong>Alfa Romeo<\/strong> roadster is ready for the American market and combines both design and life style, reviving the myth of the Duetto &nbsp;(ne parlano ilon Feb. 12 in <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/drivers-seat\/2013\/02\/12\/alfa-romeo-readies-4c-sports-car-for-geneva-debut\/?KEYWORDS=italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alfa Romeo Readies 4C Sports Car for Geneva Debut<\/a>; <em>Washington Post<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/italys-alfa-romeo-to-make-us-comeback-this-year-with-new-two-seat-sports-car\/2013\/02\/12\/c7ee6a52-7529-11e2-9889-60bfcbb02149_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy&#8217;s Alfa Romeo to make US comeback this year with new two-seat sports car<\/a>; <em>Bloomberg Businessweek<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/ap\/2013-02-12\/alfa-romeo-to-make-us-comeback-with-new-sports-car\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alfa Romeo to make US comeback with new sports car<\/a>).
