Monti\u2019s realism and a reduction in income tax <\/strong>\u2013 The Italian government approved the stability pact and the day after (October 11), the foreign press turned its attention to what was called the \u201csurprise\u201d measure: the reduction of income tax rates (IRPEF) for incomes under 28 thousand euros a year. Les Echos<\/em> – Mario Monti annonce une baisse inattendue des imp\u00f4ts des plus bas revenus<\/a>*; The Economic Times<\/em> – Italy Prime Minister Monti announces surprise income tax cut<\/a>; Wall Street Journal <\/em>– Monti unveils surprise tax cut<\/a>; The Independent<\/em> – Italian low-paid workers handed income tax cut<\/a>). The measure, as the Financial Times<\/em> wrote in an editorial, was a demonstration of \u201cMonti\u2019s realism\u201d (Financial Times<\/em> – Monti\u2019s realism*) as well as an effort to fight the recession (Publico<\/em> – Mario Monti tenta limitar recess\u00e3o com \u201cal\u00edvio moderado\u201d da carga fiscal). In addition, the income tax reduction that the Rome government announced has become a model even in Germany, where Chancellor Angela Merkel announced tax cuts to stimulate recovery (October 12,  ABC<\/em> – Merkel sigue la estela de Monti y planea bajar los impuestos; Le Figaro<\/em> – Merkel et Monti veulent baisser les imp\u00f4ts pour relancer la croissance<\/a>). Finally, for a complete picture of the Italian economy, international papers reported on the good results of treasury bond auctions<\/strong> which were unaffected by the downgrading of Spanish ratings (October 11 1nd 12,  China Post<\/em>, Italy\u2019s borrowing costs generally lower in 6-billion-euro bond sale<\/a>; Valor Economico<\/em> – It\u00e1lia oferece juro menor em venda de t\u00edtulos da d\u00edvida<\/a>*; Handelsblatt<\/em> – \u201eDas war eine sehr starke Auktion\u201c <\/a>)<\/p>\n

Economy, fashion and important people <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 Together with the tradition attention to economic policy, the foreign press reported on other news about the presence of Italian businesses, brands and political figures in the world. Les Echos <\/em>and La Tribune<\/em> announced Eni<\/strong>\u2019s plans for growth in the France\u2019s retail gas market (October 8, Les Echos<\/em> – Le p\u00e9trolier italien ENI relance son offre de gaz naturel pour les particuliers en France<\/a>*;  La Tribune<\/em> – Altergaz se rebaptise ENI pour mieux conqu\u00e9rir les particuliers<\/a>), while Brasil Economico<\/em> ran an article on fashion and the rebirth of teh Schiaparelli<\/strong> brand thanks to the work of Diego Della Valle (October 9 – Grife Schiaparelli, rival de Chanel, ressurge em Paris*). Finally, there was interest in the new job of Romano Prodi<\/strong>: the former head of the European Commission was also appointed as an emissary of the United Nations in the difficult area of Sahel (October 10,  Les Echos<\/em> – Romano Prodi nomm\u00e9 \u00e9missaire de L\u2019ONU pour le Sahel<\/a>*; Le Figaro<\/em> – <\/a>Romano Prodi charg\u00e9 de mission au Sahel par l\u2019ONU<\/a>).<\/p>\n
