Italy and art: from Caravaggio to the Metropolitan Museum<\/strong> \u2013 This week, art was Italy\u2019s representative on the pages of the foreign press. Specifically, numerous papers around the world reported on the discovery of 100 unknown drawings by the young Michelangelo Merisi, <\/strong>commonly known as Caravaggio <\/strong>(July 6, Washington Post – <\/em>Italian art historians claim to find dozens of works by Caravaggio in collection of master<\/a>: Diario de Noticias –<\/em> Desenhos de Caravaggio encontrados em Mil\u00e3o<\/a>;   Le Figaro –<\/em> D\u00e9couverte de dessins attribu\u00e9s au Caravage; The Guardian –<\/em>  Cache of \u2018Caravaggio sketches\u2019 Found hidden in Milan castle<\/a>; S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung – <\/em>Hundert Zeichnungen von Caravaggio in Italien gefunden<\/a>), underlining that the \u201ctreasure\u201d might be worth up to 700 million euros.<\/p>\n

But interest was not only generated by recent discoveries. There was a great deal of enthusiasm in Argentina over the arrival of works from the Pinacoteca of Ancona<\/strong> to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Buenos Aires. Articles about the exhibit \u201cSix Hundred Years of Italian Art\u201d were run in Clarins<\/em> (\u201cSeiscientos a\u00f1os de arte italiano\u201d abre el s\u00e1bado en el Museo de Arte Decorativo<\/a>) and La Nacion<\/em> (Un paseo por lo mejor del arte italiano, de Rafael a Tiziano<\/a>). Then, there was the show at New York\u2019s Metropolitan Museum of paintings by Bellini, Titan and others from the ‘Accademia Carrara<\/strong> in Bergamo (New York Times<\/em>, Jluy 5 – ‘Bellini, Titian and Lotto’ at the Metropolitan Museum <\/a>). For those who prefer to enjoy Italian art and culture on their home ground, the Spanish newspaper El Pais<\/em> proposes two itineraries: a steamer journey starting in Venice<\/strong> that connects eight city museums (July 5 – El vaporetto del arte<\/a>), and a tour of the walls and treasures of Lucca<\/strong> (July 1 – De Boccherini a Puccini<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Economic leaders<\/strong> \u2013 The week after the summit on the future of the euro, there was no lack of articles on economic policy. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em> published an analysis of relations between Italy and Germany with an interview of Mario Monti, <\/em><\/strong>in which the Italian Prime Minister reiterated Italy\u2019s commitment to reform and stated that Rome will not need bailouts from Europe (July 3 – Italien verlangt keine Rettung und keine Eurobonds<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The New York Times<\/em> dedicated space to another Italian on the economic stage, , Mario Draghi<\/strong>, and explaining that after the decisions made by European leaders, the president of the European Central Bank will have more powers to address the crisis (July 2 – Europe\u2019s Banking Chief Wields New Power in Crisis<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Fiat\u2019s plans and Pininfarina\u2019s cars<\/strong> \u2013 The spotlight also shone on Italy\u2019s automotive sector. On one hand, there was great interest, especially in the United States, in Fiat\u2019s<\/strong> determination to increase its shares in Chrysler (July 3,  Wall Street Journal<\/em> – Fiat to Raise Stake in Chrysler<\/a> and Washington Post<\/em> – Fiat looking to boost Chrysler stake with 3.3 percent purchase from trust fund<\/a>). The  strategies of the Turin-based carmaker also caught the attention of the Brazilian Valor Economico<\/em>, which describes its plan to invest $400 million in green technology (July 5 – Fiat investir\u00e1 US$ 440 milh\u00f5es em tecnologias verdes<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There were numerous articles remembering Sergio Pininfarina<\/strong>, the \u201cgenius of Italian automotive design.\u201d In the days after his death, there were profiles and articles published in papers all over the world, from Europe (El Pais<\/em> – Sergio Pininfarina, polifac\u00e9tico icono del dise\u00f1o de autom\u00f3viles; S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung<\/em> – Der Formvollender<\/a>) and the Americas (Wall Street Journal<\/em> – Design Firm Boss Sergio Pininfarina, Dead at 85<\/a>; La Nacion<\/em> \u2013 El genio del estilo italiano<\/a>) passando per il Medio Oriente (Gulf News – Italy mourns Ferrari genius) to the Middle East (Gulf News<\/em> – Italy mourns Ferrari genius<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Finally, The Hindu Business Line<\/em> also reported on car manufacturing, with an article about the auto parts group Sogefi <\/strong>(July 5 –  Italy car parts maker Sogefi adds capacity in India<\/a>)<\/p>\n
