Draghi appeals, Monti reassures<\/strong> \u2013 While the tension in financial markets resurfaced, the world\u2019s major newspapers scrutinized the European Central Bank and its President, Mario Draghi. On April 4 and 5, the major financial newspapers examined the appeal made by the former Governor of the Bank of Italy for Europe\u2019s governments to continue along the road to reform (Financial Times<\/em> – ECB exit talk premature, says Draghi<\/a>* ABC<\/em> – Draghi insiste en acelerar las reformas<\/a>; Publico<\/em> – Mario Draghi diz que \u00e9 prematuro abandonar medidas anticrise<\/a>). While a few broadsheets expressed doubts over Italy\u2019s ability to enact further restrictive measures (such as the Financial Times<\/em>, April 2 – Recession stirs doubts over Italy\u2019s targets<\/a>*),, the foreign press also acted as a sounding board for the reassurances voiced by Prime Minister Mario Monti <\/strong>(April 4, Expansion<\/em> – Monti descarta nuevas medidas de austeridad porque a\u00fan tiene ‘margen’<\/a> and El Economista<\/em> – Monti descarta nuevas medidas de austeridad porque Italia a\u00fan tiene “m\u00e1rgen” para equilibrar las cuenta<\/a>). They also emphasized the signs of improvement in Italy\u2019s deficit (Wall Street Journal<\/em>, April 4 – Italy Narrows Budget Deficit<\/a>). The country\u2019s job market reform<\/strong> also received renewed attention with the presentation of the final text of the reform bill (April 5 Washington Post<\/em> – Italy labor market reform: more costs for companies, but opportunity for the young<\/a>; La Nacion<\/em> – Lanza Monti una amplia reforma laboral<\/a>; Financial Times<\/em> – Monti makes concessions to win allies<\/a>*). In short, Monti and Draghi again shared center stage, several papers pointing out the contribution that the  \u201ctwo Marios\u201d made to changing Italy\u2019s (April 1 La Nacion<\/em> – Dos Marios reconstruyen la imagen de Italia<\/a>; El Pais<\/em> – Europa y los dos Marios<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Italian business and international markets<\/strong> \u2013 There was also mention this week of the international position of Italian businesses, large and small. While the Washington Post<\/em> and Les Echos<\/em> were interested in the increasing influence in the U.S. of Fiat<\/strong>, which has \u2013 with Chrysler \u2013 compensated for the drop in the European car market (April 4, Fiat and Chrysler aim to increase global sales to as many as 4.4 million in 2012<\/a>;  Chrysler devient la machine \u00e0 profits de Fiat<\/a>*), Gulf News<\/em>, published in the United Arab Emirates, discussed the debut in Dubai of luxury pen manufacturer Montegrappa<\/strong> (Gulf News<\/em>, April 5 – Luxury pen maker plans to cover new markets<\/a>). Finally, Le Fiagro<\/em> ran a piece on the Italian artisan ice cream chain, Amorino<\/strong>, founded by Cristiano Sereni and Paolo Benassi (March 31 – Cristiano Sereni \u00e0 la conqu\u00eate des Fran\u00e7ais avec le glacier Amorino<\/a>)<\/p>\n
