The bulk of the reports published focused on some of the more vibrant names in Italian fashion and design and their internationalization strategies. The articles were on topics ranging from the opening of a new showroom in Hong Kong by the <strong>Fiat<\/strong> group (in the <em>South China Morning Post<\/em> of February 13 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/portal\/site\/SCMP\/menuitem.2c913216495213d5df646910cba0a0a0\/?vgnextoid=4aaed3885e175310VgnVCM100000360a0a0aRCRD&amp;vgnextfmt=teaser&amp;ss=Hong+Kong&amp;s=News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Car showroom\u2019s cafe offers a taste of Italy<\/a>*) and the deal signed in India by fine tailoring and clothing brand <strong>Canali<\/strong> (in <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> of February 13 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/dealjournalindia\/2012\/02\/13\/canali-group-genesis-luxury-fashion-to-set-up-india-venture\/?KEYWORDS=canali\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canali Group, Genesis Luxury Fashion to Set Up India Venture<\/a>), through to the marketing strategies of <strong>Cavalli<\/strong> (the subject of analysis in the February 11 edition of the Saudi daily <em>Arab News<\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/arabnews.com\/lifestyle\/offbeat\/article573872.ece%C3%B9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cavalli trades pleats for tweets<\/a>*). The Florentine fashion house was also the focus of an article that appeared in India\u2019s <em>Economic Times<\/em>,<em> <\/em>which looked at the firm\u2019s plans to open Caf\u00e8 Cavalli stores in this promising Asian market (February 17 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/news-by-industry\/cons-products\/fashion-\/-cosmetics-\/-jewellery\/roberto-cavalli-teams-up-with-manav-gangwanis-infinite-luxury-for-indian-stores\/articleshow\/11920393.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roberto Cavalli teams up with Manav Gangwani\u2019s Infinite Luxury for Indian stores<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Alongside fashion and design, there were a number of news stories published dealing with Italian industrial and financial groups: <strong>UniCredit<\/strong> was described as having good growth prospects due to the presence of Italian firms in the Chinese market (in the <em>China Daily<\/em> on February 16 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/cndy\/2012-02\/16\/content_14618893.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UniCredit sees corporate expansion driving its Chinese mainland growth<\/a>), whilst <strong>Prysmian<\/strong> was reported as having been awarded an 800 million euro contract to lay an underwater electrical cable between Scotland and England (in the <em>Financial Times<\/em> of February 17 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/d365028e-589b-11e1-b9c6-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1mdkdP2j4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland-England subsea power link planned<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>As usual, tourism-related coverage also contributed to positive foreign press exposure for Italy this week: of note in this regard was a report from Carnival in <strong>Venice,<\/strong> which appeared in the Spanish paper <em>ABC<\/em> (February 17 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.es\/20120217\/cultura\/abci-venecia-201202170027.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venecia por fuera y por dentro<\/a>), and a piece offering some tips for a budget-priced cultural holiday to <strong>Milan<\/strong> (in <em>The Independent<\/em> on February 15 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/europe\/milan-for-300-6917363.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Milan for \u00a3300<\/a>). The Lombard capital also featured in an item published in <em>El Mundo<\/em>, which drew the attention of Spanish readers to the Bosco Verticale (or Vertical Forest) project involving two new eco-friendly apartment tower blocks being built in the district of Porta Nuova (February 11 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/elmundo\/2012\/02\/10\/cultura\/1328895158.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Un bosque vertical para combatir la poluci\u00f3n de la ciudad<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prominent Italians in politics, business &amp; culture \u2013<\/strong> Whilst there was less international press coverage of Italian economic policy developments this week, interest in <strong>Mario Monti<\/strong> remained high, particularly in the wake of the speech delivered by the Italian prime minister to the European Parliament (<em>The New York Times <\/em>on February 17 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/02\/11\/world\/europe\/italys-prime-minister-praises-effort-by-greece-says-euro-zone-will-survive.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy\u2019s Prime Minister Offers Praise for Greece and Optimism About Euro Zone<\/a>; and <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> on February 16 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970204792404577225221847051672.html?KEYWORDS=italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy\u2019s Leader Warns EU Needs Better Democracy<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>The print media spotlight was also trained on other Italian personalities: the Brazilian paper <em>Valor Econ\u00f4mico <\/em>devoted a page to <strong>Francesco Abruzzesi<\/strong>, the new president of Citro\u00ebn in Brazil (14 February &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valor.com.br\/empresas\/2529010\/um-italiano-no-comando-da-citroen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Um italiano no comanda da Citro\u00ebn<\/a>*), whilst the Spanish press focused on the composer <strong>Salvatore Sciarrino<\/strong>, who received an award from the Fundaci\u00f3n BBVA for his contribution to reinvigorating vocal and instrumental music (<em>ABC<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.es\/20120215\/cultura-musica\/abcp-sciarrino-premiado-renovacion-musica-20120215.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sciarrino premiado por su renovaci\u00f3n de la m\u00fasica vocal e instrumental<\/a>; and <em>La Vanguardia<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressdisplay.com\/pressdisplay\/it\/showlink.aspx?bookmarkid=EER1G8H5ZSJ7&amp;linkid=20eca6f9-b921-4930-8d73-e2974397a601&amp;pdaffid=5ndEKy1fE2RtBtNC0fV3Dw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sciarrino, premio BBVA Fronteras del Conocimiento en M\u00fasica Contempor\u00e1nea<\/a>* &#8211; both on February 15).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>* marked articles viewable online upon payment or registration<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Italy through the eyes of the world: design, industry and tourism \u2013<\/strong> After almost two months of uninterrupted coverage of Italian economic policy affairs, the foreign press chose to turn the spotlight this week on Italian industry-related news.
