The Italian prime minister\u2019s visit to the White House was featured as a cover story by <em>Time<\/em> magazine, which posed the question of whether the former economics professor could be the man to \u201csave Europe\u201d (February 10 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,2106512,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Mario Monti Is the Most Important Man in Europe<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p>Whilst other US papers carried news of Monti\u2019s meeting with Barack Obama (<em>The Washington Post<\/em> on February 9 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/mario-monti-italys-prime-minister-aims-to-set-a-new-growth-agenda-for-europe\/2012\/02\/08\/gIQALoVyzQ_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mario Monti, Italy\u2019s prime minister, aims to set a new growth agenda for Europe<\/a>), an editorial in <em>The Times<\/em> by former editor of <em>The Economist<\/em> Bill Emmott chose to comment instead on his style of government, dubbing him the \u201ciron professor\u201d and thereby drawing a parallel between the reforms being passed in Italy and the structural changes wrought in the United Kingdom by Margaret Thatcher (February 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/tto\/opinion\/columnists\/billemmott\/article3310094.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Iron Professor has 1 year to save Italy<\/a>*). The Italian prime minister was also the subject of an interview published in the American financial daily <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> (on February 7 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203315804577209341047730830.html?KEYWORDS=monti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Q&amp;A with Mario Monti<\/a>*), whilst both the German paper <em>Die Welt<\/em> (on February 7 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welt.de\/print\/die_welt\/debatte\/article13854226\/Montis-Meritokratie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montis Meritokratie<\/a>) and the UAE\u2019s <em>Gulf News<\/em> (of February 5 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressdisplay.com\/pressdisplay\/it\/showlink.aspx?bookmarkid=UUQLVABGUL53&amp;linkid=74272de2-b15f-461b-8136-e68d375238fd&amp;pdaffid=5ndEKy1fE2RtBtNC0fV3Dw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Only Monti\u2019s \u2018depoliticised democracy\u2019 can save Italy<\/a>*) examined the structural reforms being introduced in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding off this coverage of what an editorial in France\u2019s <em>Les Echos<\/em> called \u201cthe hour of the Italians\u201d (February 9 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/opinions\/edito\/0201888528329-le-temps-des-italiens-286607.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le temps des Italiens<\/a>) was also a profile piece in the <em>Financial Times<\/em> on <strong>Mario Draghi<\/strong>, described as having shown himself to be a \u201cswift, pragmatic decision-maker\u201c in his first 100 days as head of the ECB (February 7 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/a7ade85e-5184-11e1-a99d-00144feabdc0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An Italian Job, Draghi\u2019s first 100 days at the ECB<\/a>*), a view endorsed by <em>Le Monde<\/em>, which spoke of a \u201djob well-done\u201c (February 8 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/crise-financiere\/article\/2012\/02\/08\/les-100-jours-de-mario-draghi-operation-reussie_1640266_1581613.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Les cent jours de Mario Draghi, op\u00e9ration r\u00e9ussie<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The king of cashmere and Pirelli\u2019s international growth &#8211;<\/strong> In addition to the two \u201csuper Marios\u201d, another leading light in the Italian business world made international headlines this week. A number of overseas papers reported the announcement by <strong>Brunello Cucinelli<\/strong> \u2013 hailed as the \u201cking of cashmere\u201d \u2013 of plans to list his eponymous label on the Milan stock exchange (<em>Les Echos<\/em> on February 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/entreprises-secteurs\/grande-consommation\/actu\/0201880410543-brunello-cucinelli-le-roi-du-cachemire-italien-vise-la-bourse-284666.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brunello Cucinelli, le roi du cachemire italien, vise la Bourse<\/a>*;&nbsp; and <em>Le Monde<\/em> on February 7 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressdisplay.com\/pressdisplay\/it\/showlink.aspx?bookmarkid=6S8O4OC8Q1D5&amp;linkid=4bdce285-55a5-4827-986c-6a0e1f29eb4d&amp;pdaffid=5ndEKy1fE2RtBtNC0fV3Dw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cucinelli souhaite entrer \u00e0 la Bourse de Milan<\/a>*). Focusing more on Italian industry was a page-long item in the Argentine daily <em>La Naci\u00f3n<\/em>, which looked at Pirelli\u2019s Latin American prospects. As explained in an interview given by Mauro Pessi, CEO of Pirelli Latinam\u00e9rica, and Daniel Disalvo, CEO of Pirelli Argentina, the group is set to open a new plant in the region by 2014 (February 4 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lanacion.com.ar\/1445472-pirelli-estrategias-e-inversiones-en-la-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pirelli, estrategias e inversiones en la regi\u00f3n<\/a>). <em>The Washington Post<\/em>, in turn, carried news of the imminent launch of the NTV high-speed train service in Italy (February 7 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/industries\/italys-new-high-speed-train-service-due-to-begin-next-month\/2012\/02\/07\/gIQANjjDwQ_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy\u2019s new high-speed train service due to begin next month<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italian winter holiday recommendations<\/strong> <strong>\u2013<\/strong> Finally, whilst much press coverage of Italy over the past week was given over to reports of the troubles currently afflicting the country, several papers ran travel pieces with suggestions for winter holiday spots in Italy: alongside the by-now customary recommendation of Carnival in Venice, featured in Portugal\u2019s <em>Di\u00e1rio de Noticias<\/em> (on February 6 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressdisplay.com\/pressdisplay\/it\/showlink.aspx?bookmarkid=BNNBEXPHJFQ4&amp;linkid=7245fdd2-d777-428c-b591-991c090129b0&amp;pdaffid=5ndEKy1fE2RtBtNC0fV3Dw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veneza vive os dez dias do Carnaval<\/a>*), other articles offered readers some ideas for less-visited destinations, such as a week\u2019s skiing in Alta Badia<em> <\/em>(in <em>Die Welt<\/em> on February 7 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welt.de\/reise\/nah\/article13853580\/Spitzenkoeche-Schlemmerhuetten-und-schwarze-Pisten.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spitzenk\u00f6che, Schlemmerh\u00fctten und schwarze Pisten<\/a>), and a journey of discovery through Cremona, the birthplace of the violin and home to a notable cheese-making tradition (in the English-language Indian daily<em> The Hindu<\/em> on February 4 &#8211;
