In the days immediately following approval of the decree by Cabinet, several related articles appeared in some of the major international dailies (in <em>La Tribune<\/em> on January 23 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latribune.fr\/journal\/edition-du-2301\/economie-international\/1242422\/mario-monti-liberalise-au-pas-de-charge-de-nombreux-secteurs-en-italie.html\">Mario Monti lib\u00e9ralise au pas de charge de nombreux secteurs en Italie<\/a>*; in the <em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em> on January 22 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/wirtschaft\/reformen-in-italien-monti-braucht-mehr-mut-11619312.html\">Monti braucht mehr Mut<\/a>; and in <em>El Mundo<\/em> on January 20 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/elmundo\/2012\/01\/20\/economia\/1327083365.html\">Italia lanza un gran plan de liberalizaciones: desde taxis a farmacias y gasolineras<\/a>), as well as in newspapers from emerging markets (in <em>Valor Econ\u00f4mico<\/em> on January 23 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valor.com.br\/internacional\/2496932\/italia-anuncia-novo-pacote\">Italia anuncia novo pacote<\/a>*; and in <em>Gulf News <\/em>on January 22 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/gulfnews.com\/business\/economy\/italian-cabinet-approves-package-for-deregulation-1.968994\">Italian cabinet approves package for deregulation<\/a>). The various reports detailed the measures approved, highlighting in particular those aimed at stimulating the country\u2019s economic growth. Also receiving wide coverage during the week was news of the drop in Italy\u2019s borrowing costs, with America\u2019s main financial daily praising the efforts of the Italian Treasury (<em>The<\/em> <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>on January 26 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/eurocrisis\/2012\/01\/26\/italys-good-decision\/\">Italy\u2019s Good Decision<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In terms of Italy\u2019s role in Europe, an article in the <em>Financial Times<\/em> (of January 26 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/a209e0b2-4769-11e1-b847-00144feabdc0.html\">Europe rests on Monti\u2019s shoulders<\/a>*) explained to its readers that with Mario Monti at the helm, the country has once again become a key player, describing the Italian prime minister as currently the \u201cmost interesting\u201d leader on the Old Continent. A similar stance was taken by France\u2019s <em>Le Monde<\/em> (26 January \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/cgi-bin\/ACHATS\/acheter.cgi?offre=ARCHIVES&amp;type_item=ART_ARCH_30J&amp;objet_id=1180935\">La le\u00e7on de politique d\u2019 \u201cIl Professore\u201d<\/a>*), which was at pains to underline the technocrat\u2019s credibility. Also of note was an editorial in Portugal\u2019s liberal daily <em>P\u00fablico<\/em>, which labeled Monti and the President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi the two \u201cSuper-Marios\u201d that could yet save Europe (on January 22 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/jornal.publico.pt\/noticia\/22-01-2012\/supermarios-os-italianos-que-ainda-podem-salvar-a-europa-23820612.htm\">\u201cSuper-Marios\u201d: os italianos que ainda podem salvar a Europa<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infrastructure and networks \u2013<\/strong> There was also interest shown in foreign newspapers this week in the ramifications of a provision contained in the decree requiring the spin-off by Eni of its controlling stake in the Snam gas distribution network. The story was covered in the <em>Financial Times<\/em> (of January 23 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/2cc134e8-45c7-11e1-acc9-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1kZQiOlpV\">Italy confirms Eni to spin off stake in Snam<\/a>*) and in <em>ABC<\/em> (on January 23 \u2013 &nbsp;ENI vender\u00e1 su red de gas por 3.500 millones*). <em>Le Monde<\/em>, for its part, devoted an article to the economic development generated around the Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo in recent years (on January 26 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/cgi-bin\/ACHATS\/acheter.cgi?offre=ARCHIVES&amp;type_item=ART_ARCH_30J&amp;objet_id=1180924\">Comment l\u2019a\u00e9roport de Bergame fait d\u00e9coller toute une ragion<\/a>*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italin fashion, architecture, theater and cuisine<\/strong> <strong>\u2013<\/strong> With Milan Fashion Week now over, this week\u2019s coverage of Italian fashion focused on Italian designers showcasing collections in Paris, such as Versace (in <em>The Independent<\/em> on January 24 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/fashion\/features\/viva-versace-after-eight-years-away-donatella-takes-glamour-back-to-the-top-6293678.html\">Viva Versace! After eight years away, Donatella takes glamour back to the top<\/a>) and Alessandro Sartori, designer for the label Berluti (in <em>Le Monde<\/em> on January 21 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/rendez-vous\/article\/2012\/01\/21\/berluti-habille-la-silhouette-de-pied-en-cap_1632776_3238.html\">Berluti habille la silhouette de pied en cap<\/a>). There were also articles dealing with Italian theater, with Pippo Delbono\u2019s company staging a production in Paris (reviewed in <em>Le Monde<\/em> on January 26 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/culture\/article\/2012\/01\/26\/voyage-au-bout-de-la-folie-pippo-delbono_1635093_3246.html\">Voyage au bout de la folie Pippo Delbono<\/a>), and key figures in Italian architecture, with an item appearing in the <em>Folha de S. Paulo<\/em> looking at Stefano Boeri\u2019s plans to rehabilitate the <em>favelas<\/em> in Brazil (January 25 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.folha.uol.com.br\/ilustrada\/1039218-stefano-boeri-propoe-acupuntura-urbana-para-zonas-de-crise.shtml\">\u2018Cultura para pobres n\u00e3o pode ser pobre\u2019<\/a>).
