There were more than 80 newspaper reports devoted to Italy\u2019s economic policies, with the good results of the latest auction of BOTs [Italian Treasury bills with maturities of up to one year] forming the subject of 10 international press items alone, including the article <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/marketbeat\/2012\/01\/12\/italian-bond-yields-tumbling-again\/\">Italian Bond Yields Tumbling Again<\/a> in <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> of January 12. Particular interest was shown in Italy\u2019s role within Europe, as evidenced by the two interviews with Prime Minister <strong>Mario Monti <\/strong>published in France and Germany (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.welt.de\/politik\/ausland\/article13808298\/Warum-Italien-mehr-wie-Deutschland-sein-sollte.html\">Warum Italien mehr wie Deutschland sein sollte<\/a> in <em>Die Welt<\/em> on January 11, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.it\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=le%20figaro%20mario%20monti%20:%20%25C2%25ABl%27europe%20n%27a%20plus%20%25C3%25A0%20avoir%20peur%20de%20l%27italie%25C2%25BB&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CC4QFjAA&amp;url=http:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/international\/2012\/01\/04\/010\">Mario Monti : \u201cL\u2019Europe n\u2019a plus \u00e0 avoir peur de l\u2019Italie\u201d<\/a>* in <em>Le Figaro<\/em> on January 4). This interest extended beyond the confines of the Old Continent, with Asia\u2019s <em>China Daily<\/em>, for example, examining Italy\u2019s economic outlook (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.it\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=china%20daily%20-%20italy%25E2%2580%2599s%20boot%20ready%20to%20kick%20the%20crisis%20back&amp;source=web&amp;cd=2&amp;ved=0CDcQFjAB&amp;url=http:\/\/www1.chinadaily.com.cn\/opinion\/2012-01\/12\/content_14426698.htm&amp;ei=FzgQT8KtHoy\">Italy\u2019s boot ready to kick the crisis back<\/a> \u2013 a piece penned by Attilio Massimo Iannucci, the Italian Ambassador to China, on January 13), as well as the country\u2019s trade and industrial strategies (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.it\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=china%20daily%20prime%20minister%20to%20renew%20lybia%20ties&amp;source=web&amp;cd=4&amp;ved=0CEUQFjAD&amp;url=http:\/\/www.pressdisplay.com\/pressdisplay\/viewer.aspx?issue=76502011123000000000001001&amp;page=12&amp;article%25\">Prime Minister to renew Libya ties<\/a>, on December 30).<\/p>\n<p>Among the big names in Italian industry, <strong>Fiat <\/strong>received the most foreign press coverage during the period. The Turin-based group was the focus of around twenty articles in newspapers around the world dealing with the increase of its shareholding in Chrysler and the future merger of the two groups (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/775d291e-3779-11e1-a5e0-00144feabdc0.html\">Fiat boosts stake in Chrysler to 58%<\/a>* in the <em>Financial Times<\/em> of January 5; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valor.com.br\/empresas\/1171302\/fiat-amplia-participacao-na-chrysler-apos-atingir-metas\">Fiat amplia participa\u00e7\u00e3o na Chrysler ap\u00f3s atingir metas<\/a>* in <em>Valor Econ\u00f4mico<\/em>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/entreprises-secteurs\/auto-transport\/actu\/0201827475992.htm\">Fiat fait un pas de plus sur la route de sa fusion avec Chrysler<\/a>* in <em>Les Echos<\/em>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.it\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=the%20pak%20banker%20fiat%20raises%20chrysler&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CCMQFjAA&amp;url=http:\/\/www.pressdisplay.com\/pressdisplay\/viewer.aspx?issue=71672012010600000000001001&amp;page=7&amp;article=f650a87c-ce27-\">Fiat raises Chrysler stake in step toward merger<\/a>* in <em>The Pak Banker<\/em>, all on January 6), as well as other possible new alliances (<a href=\"http:\/\/ged.latribune.fr\/zetasearch\/recherche\/index.jsp?DN_SEARCH=fiat%20draguerait\">Fiat draguerait \u00e0 nouveau PSA<\/a>* in <em>La Tribune<\/em>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/entreprises-secteurs\/auto-transport\/actu\/0201834925573.htm\">Sergio Marchionne fait resurgir l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se d\u2019une grande alliance Fiat-PSA<\/a> in <em>Les Echos<\/em>, both on January 11). During the Detroit Auto Show, reports also appeared looking at Fiat\u2019s new models (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.it\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=fiat%20panda%20le%20bons%20sens%20a%20la%20italienne&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CCoQFjAA&amp;url=http:\/\/www.pressdisplay.com\/pressdisplay\/viewer.aspx?issue=25002011123000000000001001&amp;page=23&amp;article=183608\">Fiat Panda, le bon sens \u00e0 l\u2019italienne<\/a>* in <em>Le Monde<\/em> of December 30, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valor.com.br\/empresas\/1179254\/fiat-ressuscita-o-dodge-dart\">Fiat ressuscita o Dodge Dart<\/a>* in <em>Valor Econ\u00f4mico<\/em> on January10). A further article worthy of mention dealing with another Italian player in the automotive industry was published in France\u2019s <em>Le Figaro<\/em>; the piece looked at the strategies of Pirelli, which is focusing on top-of-the-range products to beat the competition (<a href=\"http:\/\/recherche.lefigaro.fr\/recherche\/access\/lefigaro_fr.php?archive=BszTm8dCk78atGCYonbyzmp1F+RDNwJ3DOnmy7XgRwTQZhzw6llv08svODu\/+KUsu2IGtjAq08M=\">Pirelli veut distancer Michelin sur le pneu haut de gamme<\/a> on December 29).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the column inches dedicated to Fiat\u2019s CEO <strong>Sergio Marchionne<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203436904577148971709621842.html\">Marchionne Considers Plans for Succession<\/a> in <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> of January 10), there was also foreign press coverage devoted to other key Italian figures in the worlds of business and economics. The <em>Financial Times<\/em>, for instance, interviewed two economists, <strong>Lorenzo Bini Smaghi<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/babb1f48-2ca4-11e1-8cca-00144feabdc0.html\">Bini Smaghi urges bold decisions<\/a> on December 24) and <strong>Giovanni Peri<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/23\/774161\/immigration-economics-and-dirty-jobs-plus-a-qa-with-giovanni-peri\/\">Immigration economics and \u201cdirty jobs\u201d, plus a Q&amp;A with Giovanni Peri <\/a>on December 24), whilst <em>Le Figaro<\/em> ran a profile on the new chairman of Finmeccanica <strong>Giuseppe Orsi<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/decideurs.lefigaro.fr\/article\/583546-giuseppe-orsi-un-ingenieur-aux-commandes-du-groupe-finmeccanica\/\">Giuseppe Orsi, un ing\u00e9nieur aux commandes du groupe Finmeccanica<\/a> on January 4)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italian cultural personalities and tourist destinations<\/strong> <strong>\u2013<\/strong> Foreign press coverage of Italian culture picked up again during the monitored period: marking the 80<sup>th<\/sup> birthday of <strong>Umberto Eco<\/strong>, dedicated profiles and interviews with the author appeared both in the Spanish press (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.es\/20120105\/cultura\/abcp-umberto-debo-escritor-para-20120105.html\">Umberto Eco: \u201cDebo ser un escritor para masoquistas\u201d<\/a> in <em>ABC<\/em> on January 5) and especially in German newspapers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.welt.de\/kultur\/literarischewelt\/article13798448\/Umberto-Eco-Superstar-denn-Alleswissen-ist-Pop.html\">Umberto Eco Superstar \u2013 denn Alleswissen ist Pop<\/a> in <em>Die Welt<\/em>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/feuilleton\/buecher\/umberto-eco-wird-achtzig-der-zeichenmeister-aus-alessandria-11592151.html\">Der Zeichenmeister aus Alessandria<\/a> in the <em>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/em>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/kultur\/umberto-eco-zum-meister-der-raffinesse-1.1250980\">Meister der raffinasse<\/a> in the <em>S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung<\/em>, all on January 5), whilst the Argentine daily <em>La Naci\u00f3n<\/em> devoted an article to the Italian writer and archaeologist <strong>Valerio Manfredi <\/strong>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lanacion.com.ar\/1436622-manfredi-el-best-seller-de-la-historia\">Manfredi, el best-seller de la historia<\/a> on December 30).<\/p>\n<p>Italian art, on the other hand, garnered two reports during the period, one on the Sistine Madonna by <strong>Raphael<\/strong>, on exhibition in Dresden (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeit.de\/2011\/52\/Sixtinische-Madonna\">Ich seh ihr Bild. Sie war\u2019s<\/a> in <em>Die Zeit<\/em> on December 24), and another dealing with works by <strong>Maurizio Cattelan<\/strong> on show in New York in a retrospective (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.welt.de\/print\/wams\/kultur\/article13803730\/Cattelan-und-die-Rente-mit-51.html\">Cattelan und die Rente mit 51<\/a> in <em>Die Welt<\/em> on January 8). With the festive season in full swing, Italian travel destinations also featured in the pages of the international press: in addition to the ever well-regarded <strong>Rome<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lanacion.com.ar\/1438230-roma-en-dos-semanas-con-guia-de-lujo\">Roma en dos semanas, con gu\u00eda de lujo<\/a> in <em>La Naci\u00f3n<\/em> on January 8; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/arts\/books\/rome-by-robert-hughes\/article2294131\/\">That clich\u00e9 about all roads leading to Rome \u2013 it\u2019s true<\/a> in <em>The Globe and Mail<\/em> on January 6), also showcased were the delights of <strong>Naples<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/elviajero.elpais.com\/articulo\/viajero\/Aperitivi\/Napoles\/ardiente\/elppor\/20120106elpvia_13\/Tes\">\u2018Aperitivi\u2019 en la N\u00e1poles ardente<\/a> in <em>El Pa\u00eds <\/em>of January 6) and <strong>Milan<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.welt.de\/reise\/staedtereisen\/article13801495\/Japaner-kommen-nur-zum-Shoppen-und-es-lohnt-sich.html\">Japaner kommen nur zum Shoppen \u2013 und es lohnt sich<\/a> in <em>Die Welt <\/em>on January 7).
