Award ceremony: Aspen Institute Italia Award for scientific research and cooperation between Italy and the United Stated<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The winners of the Aspen Institute Italia Award\u2019s most recent editions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2025 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/premio-aspen-2025-la-ricerca-vincitrice\/\">\u201cPrioritization of Resilience Initiatives for Climate-Related Disasters in the Metropolitan City of Venice\u201d<\/a>, a multidisciplinary research project, pushing the frontiers of environmental and climate science and engineering. The research has been carried out within the BRIDGE project, \u201cBuilding resilience of society to natural disasters: improved methodologies and solutions for Italy and US\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2024 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/premio-aspen-2024-la-ricerca-vincitrice\/\">&#8220;Extreme flow simulations reveal skeletal adaptations of deep-sea sponges&#8221;<\/a> and open up unprecedented perspectives for engineering design. A multidisciplinary study at the frontiers of physics, biology, computer science and engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2023 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/aspen-award-2023-the-winning-entry\/\">A light-activated potassium channel for neuronal inhibition<\/a>. This study demonstrates the efficacy of a new synthetic protein that, activated by blue light, can alleviate neuropathic pain. In this context, the development of synthetic proteins that respond to light is a goal of paramount importance for treating pathologies linked to the hyperexcitability of neurons, such as chronic neuropathic pain, which has so far proved difficult to treat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2022 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/aspen-award-2022-the-winning-entry-2\/\">The observation of radio, optical and x-ray signals has revealed the presence of a collimated astrophysical jet in material expelled by the fusion of GW170817 neutron stars<\/a><em>.<\/em> Over the coming years the observation of many other neutron star fusions in gravitational and electromagnetic waves will allow us to make enormous headway in understanding these events and their extreme physical conditions. On this new journey, the winning study will continue to be a guiding star while also, on a broader level, representing a milestone in the field of relativistic astrophysics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2021 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/aspen-award-2022-the-winning-entry\/\">Improved trade-offs of hydropower and sand connectivity by strategic dam planning in the Mekong<\/a>. The hydroelectric development of large river basins is a crucial factor in the economic and social development of numerous countries. This study of the Mekong basin demonstrates that strategic dam planning can considerably reduce the impact on rivers without jeopardizing the generation of energy or the production of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2020 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/aspen-award-2020-the-winning-entry\/\">Orbital angular momentum microlaser<\/a> presents a new semiconductor laser of micrometric size that produces twisted light by exploiting an \u201cexceptional quantum point\u201d. This can revolutionize the current optical communications systems and allow the transmission of information at very high speed, a development required to sustain the imminent fourth industrial revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2019 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.it\/en\/aspen-award-2019-the-winning-entry\/\">A Test for Creutzfeldt\u2013Jakob Disease Using Nasal Brushings <\/a>based on a simple and non-invasive test opens up encouraging prospects for the early diagnosis also of other degenerative diseases, such as Parkinson\u2019s, Alzheimer\u2019s and Lewy Body Dementia.
