The impact has been profound, putting in question the growth model and the sustainability of the welfare state in its current forms. Major tensions have also emerged between short term needs \u2013 such as the bailouts \u2013 and longer term goals. The very close link between modern states and capitalism, which in the Western world is captured by the expression \u201cmarket democracy\u201d, has become more evident than in the past. <\/p>\n<p> The panelists underlined the need for continuing adaptation to new circumstances, although on the basis founding values that remain essentially unchanged: external circumstances such as globalization and internal factors such as demographic trends. One of the risks deriving from the pressures under which the democracies find themselves is populism, which takes various forms but can truly undermine the pillars of liberal systems. Western democracies must then face, in a constructive fashion and without stimulating further conflicts, the challenge posed by autocratic regimes that are capable of fully exploiting the opportunities offered by international markets.<\/p>\n<p>The second panel focused on the role of the media in this rapidly evolving global context. The new information technologies are forcing professional journalism to innovate some of its working methods in order to maintain its function as guarantor of pluralism and tolerance in our open societies. In the meantime, the new media are altering the relationship between producers and consumers of information, as well as between governments and citizens, affecting diverse sectors from business to internal security to the management of international conflicts. Economic actors (investors, analysts, government advisors) are encountering growing difficulties when it comes to understanding, and even more forecast, the evolution and the real potential of new technologies: this contributes to the overall instability of the most advanced societies in a sector \u2013 the media \u2013 that remains crucial to the correct functioning of democracy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The members of the first panel analyzed the multiple repercussions of the crisis that began in 2008 on the Western economies, as well as on their political systems and societies.
